View Full Version : Jedi Classes

We've raised the idea in chats of the Jedi Order on Ossus operating a bit like Hogwarts rather than on a strict Master-Padawan level, both because there realistically aren't enough mature Jedi for all of them to have a full-time Padawan (or two), and because that way people playing a Padawan character are hopefully less dependent on their master's RPer for missions and character development. We've also had a few threads that feature some of the classes taught on Ossus, like Loki's lightsaber practicals, Anbira's meditation class, and (on the Wheel) Serena's healing seminar.
There's a lot more to cover, though, especially since these kids can't just learn mystic voodoo and saber combat all day - they also need edjumication! I think it would be helpful if those of us with knights and masters listed what sorts of classes their characters could teach. We can use NPCs to fill in the gaps - maybe Arlan Solborne teaches a biology/botany class, for instance.
If you think one of your characters could teach a class, post here, along with any thoughts about how you'd go about teaching it, just to give us all an idea of the flavor of the class. Here's a list of classes I could see being offered in addition to the Force classes - it's neither exhaustive nor compulsory, just an exercise in brainstorming:
Basic Grammar, Writing, and Literature
Mathematics
History
Physical Sciences
Biology
Astronomy
Galactic Cultures and Species
Engineering and Technology
Philosophy and Ethics
Any thoughts?

I like it. Curious to see how Rev does the philosophy class.

Rev Solomon - History of the Jedi Order
Given what an immense subject galactic history has to be, Solomon has chosen to focus on important figures throughout the history of the Jedi, like Nomi Sunrider, Ulic Quel-Droma, Revan, Satele Shan, Yoda, and Anakin Skywalker. His object is not to paint them as heroes to be emulated or villains to be despised, but to present them as flesh and blood people standing at key points in history, and to explore what they knew at the time, what their decisions were, and the consequences of their decisions. Where possible, he assigns readings from the time period they're discussing to keep the material as current as possible, and he engages the students in open discussions, challenging them to place themselves in the shoes of these historical figures. Solomon's objective is to give his students an appreciation of how each generation is shaped by the last one and shapes the next one, and to teach them that they, too, stand at an important juncture in history, and their decisions will echo on through the future.
I like it. Curious to see how Rev does the philosophy class.
I was considering that, but with Solomon's unorthodox views of the Force, it's possible there would be some resistance to letting him teach such a class. Maybe if he team-taught it with a more traditional Jedi.
Also, as a clarification, we won't necessarily have threads about all of these classes, or even any of them. This is mainly to provide some more structure and color to a day in the life of a Jedi on Ossus. For instance, we might start a thread with Wyl approaching Solomon at the end of history class, or maybe Akasha is bugging Kala while she's up late studying for her big midterm in Serena's biology class.

Maybe Tell Cho could guest lecture a diplomacy class. Hah!
"You! You are entering negotiations with the peoples of Sluis Vaan. What should you do first when meeting them?"
"...um, say hello?"
"Wrong! They will take great offense if you speak before they do. You have just doomed us and started a conflict that could last for generations!"

I could actually see that working as part of a Galactic Cultures or Sociology class. :)
Come to think of it, it could be fun to do a thread where different padawans are assigned reports on various species represented on Ossus. One could go up to Miwų Shanmā to learn about the Gossam, one could talk to Tevit and Suriyesh to learn about Nehantites, one could go interview the Cizerack...
Oh my, that poor padawan.

I like it. Wei would be more than willing to teach philosophy of the Jedi code and the nature of the Force. He could also teach carpentry and woodworking when not teaching lightsaber combat.

Kyle could teach a physical education, acrobatics, Art of Movement type class. Could even build an obstacle course to drill padawans in. He doesn't have a formal education himself so he is really not in the position to be teaching anything beyond the physical, and might have to sit in on some of those other classes so he can learn something himself.

I'd like to sign Loki up for a few of these lessons. His education was quite narrow, and he could definitely benefit from subjects like history and galactic cultures and species, and out of personal interest he'd also probably like to study engineering, technology, and sciences.

Wei will likely be trying to pick up a handful tradeskills too, since he will need them to construct the lightsaber forge. He'll have help for that, but he would also want to be able to help as well.

Serena is a healer, and also a trained diplomat. Granted, she hasn't been officially diplomatic since the Clone Wars, but....

Whenever the classes start Sirdi will be there. I'm ready, willing, with nothing to do.
