If I turn off the screen on my Nexus 5 it behaves like a CRT. It took me a while to realize that this is not how the screen should power down since it has no tubes. Reserved the room for dragoncon 2015. Was an absolute headache, and had to get an overflow hotel, the Crowne Plaza. The Sheraton was sold out before the first of the year (WTF), and the Hilton and Hyatt and Westin were sold out before you could even blink, with no timely anything from the dragoncon site :|

It really is. When I got us rooms at the Sheraton back in '12, I called in like, the middle of October and got two rooms easy. Now? Good heavens it seems folks are lucky if they can get an overflow hotel the day after the con finishes. Last year was a fluke, since we had friends who were able to snag rooms at the Hilton and invited us, but even then the sheer amount of people in attendance was mindblowing. If you didn't have a hotel room key or your con badge, you weren't getting into any of the host hotels period. They're bursting at the seams, and they HAVE to expand their host hotel network somehow as well as the ground cover/blocks.

tons of people on my fb feed have been going on and on and on and on about gamergate and I guess I just don't get a lick of it. Like, I guess its games journalists and MRA's/neckbeards vs indie game devs / SJW's, and it seems like nobody can figure out the beginning, middle or end of it.

It's like first world problems, the opera.

Basically, an indie game developer called Zoe Quinn released a game called Depression Quest. She labels herself as a feminist. When her now ex-boyfriend found out she had been unfaithful with several different men, one of whom was a games journalist who worked for Kotaku, he posted a lengthy blog about the messy business, complete with all kinds of evidence to back up his claims. And that was the spark that lit the fuse.

Zoe Quinn became the target of appalling abuse on social media which included rape and death threats. Her personal information was made available, directly connected with one such threat forcing her from her home. Later, this misogynistic crusade has been white-washed as a backlash against corruption in video games journalism. This is despite the fact that the Kotaku journalist in question has never filed an article, let alone a review about her game. So, in short, the Gamergate movement claims to be about ethics in video games journalism, and yet their target was a video games developer - whose private life was none of their business anyway, I might add. It was a misogynistic character assassination and nothing more.

Anita Sarkeesian, who runs the YouTube channel, Feminist Frequency (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC7Edgk9RxP7Fm7vjQ1d-cDA), has had numerous death threats made against her since then, forcing her from her home and forcing her to cancel a recent talk in Utah. She has become the poster girl for the resistance against this torrent of repulsive abuse, recently featured on news channels (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/gamergate-online-culture-war-over-women-in-video-games-prompts-death-threats/) and Rolling Stone (https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/features/anita-sarkeesian-gamergate-interview-20141017) fighting her cause. And to quote a section from this article (http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/10/gamergate-is-an-attack-on-ethical-journalism/), which debunks some of the Gamergate myths:


If what you don’t like about gaming journalism is that it’s too cozy with the industry and therefore the writers are afraid to be critical, then your fucking hero should be Anita Sarkeesian. She funded herself with Kickstarter and not industry money. She is harshly critical of video games, even as she is a fan. She is the ideal of what a critical gaming journalist should be: Knowledgeable, critical, fair, thorough and utterly non-corrupt.

And finally, Brianna Wu, another game developer was recently forced from her home following death threats. That is the thing in a nutshell, from my understanding of it. Here (http://www.autostraddle.com/counting-down-on-gamergate-258983/) is a poignant, personal and intelligent summary of the Gamergate fiasco. I highly recommend reading it.

And along with the aforementioned article, this (https://storify.com/EffNOVideoGames/stopgamergate-it-has-always-been-a-spin) blows some air at the "ethics in journalism" smokescreen of Gamergate. I'm in favour of journalism ethics, and I'm sure many of Gamergate's misguided supporters sincerely believe in the cause, but those people are ignorant of the movement's obscene roots and the hateful actions of its champions. My advice to them would be to abandon Gamergate entirely, and start anew, because their movement is rotten at the core.

Trailer popped off the hitch of the truck and the handle somehow got stuck underneath the rear bumper of my boss's F250. In traffic. In the rain. Both the trailer and the truck were loaded down with tools and debris from the job we were doing. We ended up having to lift the truck over the handle of the trailer (nearly crushing my fingers in the process), and then lifting the trailer back onto the hitch. All told we must have lifted at least half a ton (though not all at once!).

The worst part was us standing there waving at people for help and seeing them only stare at us as they drove by.
