Stealing Holly's idea, I've set up a USS Valiant (http://theholo.net/forum/group.php?groupid=4) user group.
From the look of it, one of the biggest advantages to groups is that we can have discussion threads that are just for us: kinda like having our own private RP discussion forum so that we don't clutter up / have to rummage through the general RP forum. There's also galleries and what-not, which I'm sure we'll find a use for!
At the moment I've signed up with my character accounts... it's easy to join/leave though, so once we know how things work a little better we can decide if that's the best/most useful option. :)
