Bleeding Cool has posted the following character breakdown for Episode VII, which is reported to have begun open casting today in the U.K. (where filming will take place). The site is emphasizing that the characters are “not necessarily to be billed in the order below,” and stressing that the site has “100% confirmed” that the following is accurate. (… But, as always, best to take all this with a healthy grain of salt for the time being.)
Late-teen female, independent, good sense of humour, fit.
Young twenty-something male, witty and smart, fit but not traditionally good looking.
A late twentysomething male, fit, handsome and confident.
Seventy-something male, with strong opinions and tough demeanour. Also doesn’ t need to be particularly fit.
A second young female, also late teens, tough, smart and fit.
Forty something male, fit, military type.
Thirtysomething male, intellectual. Apparently doesn’t need to be fit.
Let the speculation about which EU characters these are... begin!

If this is for open casting, I'd guess that maybe it's for more supporting type roles - trainee Jedi, Rebel pilots, and such. If they're planning to include any Skywalker/Solo spawn, I imagine they'd be a bit more specific about the casting/appearance requirements?
I wonder/hope if Airen Cracken is the "seventy-something male, with strong opinions and tough demeanour". That sounds like the description of a Michael Ironside / Michael Hogan character, and Airen Cracken is totally in that level of badass (or was, last time I actually read EU, which was a while ago. :uhoh)
I hope they end up drawing from EU rather than not drawing from EU, because even if they rework/contradict the specific stories and events, there's way too many good ideas and awesome characters to write them out of existence. :ohno

I would assume that at least one of the young people are going to turn out to be Han and Leia's kid. Have they said if they're going to diverge completely from the EU or...?

I don't think they've explicitly said one way or another, but I may be wrong on that.
I doubt that one of the people from that open casting is for Han/Leia's kid, though. Wouldn't they actually want to put some effort in to find someone who looks like they could be their kid? Unless they're hoping that they'll just get lucky, and someone who looks exactly right and who lives in England will notice this casting call and will show up at the audition. :\

These two could be Jaina and Jacen? Neither of them look particularly like their parents in the artwork done for the EU, so it wouldn't be like you would need to find actors who look like identical little versions of Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher. It's not like you'd look at Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen and think, yup, combine them and you *definitely* get Mark Hamill :P

Aren't Jacen and Jaina twins? Sure, it's not unheard of for people with a big age difference to play the same age, but I imagine that if they were looking for people who were supposed to look the same age, they would ask for applicants who were either both late-teens, or both twenty-something. Asking for people who look different ages in that situation would be a bit silly.

I think that for that particular age group, of late teens / early twenties, it can be really hard to place a persons age - so you could easily have an actress of 18 and an actor of 22 who appeared to be the same age. If you wanted them to look the same, you would probably have to ask for a younger actress, since girls of that age bracket generally look older / more mature than boys.

Possibly... but casting calls normally list the age they want the character to look, not the age that the actor/ess auditioning should be. It's usually down to the agents / the actors themselves to interpret whether or not they think they're appropriate for the role.
You may be right: but if you are, it's an unusual approach. *shrug*
