MS Word help

Anyhow, I'm usually pretty good with Word, but today I've run into a bit of a snag. For a printing project, I'd like to print a book that is half-page sized. So, in order to save paper, I'd like to print two half-size pages on one sheet od standard paper.

Basically going from this:

so that I can cut it in half when I am done and end up with two half-sized manuscripts. Does anybody out there know how to make Word set up a page like that? And, I've figured out how to get two pages on one, but my problem is that I want to have both be the same thing on the same page. Like, page 1 and 1 on the same set, followed by 2 and 2, and so-forth.

Oh, and I have to make it double-sided, too, but that's not hard. The book will probably be about a hundred pages or so in length.

You can make it do two columns on a page, but I don't know about two PAGES sized half a page.

Mitch, when you go to print the document, there should be a place on the print window that says "Pages per sheet." click on that and select 2 pages and it ought to print out two pages like you want. I'm not sure that's how it works though, seeing as my printer has no paper for me to try this myself.

I just tried several options, but none of them were able to give me what you asked for. It seems the only way to get Page One printed twice on the same page, is to copy/paste.

I'm still experimenting, however, but so far it ain't looking promising. :\


EDIT: Yeah, I don't think Word has an option to print page 1 twice on one piece of paper. I think you have to resort to the ol' copy/paste utilizing columns.

Or you could just make sure your margins are the same, and just print two copies and do the sorting by hand. That seems like less work than all the copy/pasting. To me. :)

Well, were I only doing one or two books, I would, but I'm thinking of fifteen to twenty books of about 200-225 pages each, so hand coallation is just not feasible.

That depends on the printer. Check your printer documentation, it may be able to do this without touching Word at all...

If your printer can't do multi-pages then:

Option 1

Print your page, then go to kinko's (or other place) and use a fancy copy machine to do a multi-page copy of it.

Option 2

Use Word Perfect
(as of Version 9 )
File -> Page Setup
Size Tab: change to landscap
Margin/Layout Tab: Divide page

Option 3

See if Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org/) can do it. (don't have it currently installed on my machine so I don't know... )

Option 4

design your pages in MS Publisher using one of the wizards to get the page layout you want. It does multi-page printing a lot better than Word. (and this program is why Word will never do layout well, MS wants people to purchase Publisher which is their answer to Quark & Adobe Page Maker)

Now having said all of that - If you want a few hours of pulling your hair out proceed with the following:

Using Word 2003 -
File -> Page Setup

Change the Multiple pages option from "normal" to "2 pages" and change the layout from "Portrait" to "Landscape"

Doing this will change your available area so you will have to adjust your font sizes to fit within the 4.5 inches of space.

Do a test print, tell your printer you want 2 copies of said page.
If that doesn't work, (you get 2 pages with one half blank instead of what you want) then do a page break and copy your page onto the second page.

Do a test print. Note: if you take the file to a different computer or printer you'll have to spend some time tweaking the margins and whatnot to get it to work again.

Using Word 2000 -
Same thing, but the window is different

File -> Page Setup

Using Word 97 -
More hassle than it's worth...

you need to either :
- do the two columns and copy & paste your page into both columns
- design a custom page size etc.
- or learn VBS, and hack the snot out of Word to get it to do what you want. :p

(suffice to say, I keep an old copy of Word Perfect handy & installed on my machine just for stuff like this)
