I was getting ready to eat dinner when something suddenly shot into my mind. I couldn't get it out... it's crazy, really. Maybe someone can answer my question:

What do zombies do in winter?

I guess this was brought on by the random snow outside.

They stockpile snowball ammunition for the summer invasions, which never quite seem to go as planned. Some people say they should subcontract the manufacturing of their munitions. Being clinically brain-dead, of course, the idea hasn't occurred to them...

No, the Zombies Hibernate (sp) during the winter because they have a hard time lurching through snow driffs so they sleep until the snow is gone and then they have more energy for the spring invasion.

Hibernation also seems to eliminate unsightly eyebags, such as those you'd recieve if shot in the face by a 9mm handgun.

Rain or shine, zombies are a-shambling. Nothing stops the hordes of the undead. Doesn't matter if there's a snow storm - they aren't affected by the cold, and will just lurch on like nothing's changed.

Snow/ice/flooding are really the only things that slow zombies at all.

Well I have heard from a reliable source that during the winter Zombies are often preyed upon by the Yetis who have an insatiable appetite for the flesh of the long-since deceased. This decreases the surplus undead population and because of the danger of hunting the undead only the fittest of Yetis survive the lean months of winter and thus the circle of life continues.

Who cares? Do you really think I rely on something like a little cold weather to take care of zombies? I am a pro-active zombie preventor.

I dunno... the Undead I've run into seem to do just fine in snow, ice, and water. Dunno about rain yet though... still waiting for the gods to program some rain into the world.

Or perhaps landmines and well-thrown grenades would do the trick. But actually, I can't seem to find my stash of those :\

I prefer 30-06. Much better range, and kinda fun to get just the right hole in the head.

Just give me a Desert Eagle, a shotgun, a flamethrower, and a Battle Axe and I'll take on any Zombie Horde.

:eng101: Zombie survivalist scenarios operate under the assumption of being able to mount defensive operations using material accessible to a civilian.

Shotgun for zombies. Pimp hand for back-talking women.

30-06 is a weapon of opportunity. It's not really versatile enough to rely on as a mainstay firearm. You need open ground to put it to maximum effect. It's recoil, weight, and magazine capacity limits its use. If you need a rifle as your primary, go for something chambered to the lower end of anti-personnel rifle rounds. Also, semi-automatic, and with an external magazine system. AR-15's, Mini-14's, SAR-1's, and WASR-10's are the front-runners for that kind of use. Narrow that list down for weapons that are rugged, reliable, easy to break down. The semi-automatic Avtomat variants are clearly superior.

A shotgun capable of delivering rifled slugs as well as scatter shot is a flexible platform for taking on the undead. My Saiga 12 would be the pinnacle of this effectiveness. It's semi-automatic, external magazine-fed, and flexible for scattershot, rifled slug, and shell length in 12 gauge from 2.5 to 3 inches. The ammunition, in addition, is vastly cheap and plentiful. Also, the Saiga 12 is built on an Avtomat Kalashnikov frame, and is every bit as rugged and easy to maintain.

It may be hasty, but I'd submit the Saiga 12 as the best anti-undead platform for civvy use.

Desert Eagles...where do I begin?

Far too expensive, far too heavy, far too unreliable and finicky. These guns retail for around $2000 or so, and weigh as much as some rifle carbines! Also, the gas operated cycling mechanism in a DE has gas ports that are both too narrow and have too many sharp angles. If you don't keep this obsessively clean, you'll experience a reduction in recoil gas flow, which leads frequently to stovepipe jamming, in which spent brass casings get caught in the ejection port by the under-cycled slide.

Further, the proprietary .50 Action Express cartridge that the Desert Eagle is known for is a terrible round. It's very expensive, and its ballistics are really disappointing when you compare it to other rimmed magnum cartridges, such as .454 Casull, .44 magnum, or .357 mag.

Lastly, a grip-fed semi-auto magnum has to have a very wide grip. I've handled them, and they're not practical at all unless you're a basketball player. Even then, you'd better have a solid grip on it when firing. Limp-wristing, like cordite fouling, can jam a Deagle.

As for a flamethrower, that's a liability waiting to happen. Its extremely heavy to wear, and you can't rely on them to destroy a zombie in a reasonable amount of time. The consensus on zombies is that one has to destroy the central nervous system, or cause structural damage on a practical scale. A flamethrower will do neither of these on an immediate basis. What it will do is turn those shambling zombies into flaming shambling zombies, which will still shamble towards you in the short run, at least.

Battle axe? Why bother? It's too much mass for too little effect. If you really need a blade (and I would argue you wouldn't), then let it be a bayonet on the end of your rifle. To be honest, if you're close enough to have to use a blade, then you are going to die. I am sorry but that's just how it is. You're either going to be killed outright or you're gonna get mauled in some way and become one of them.

If you want to plan for a melee situation, pack a vest with as much ammonium nitrate as you can fit in, and fit a fuse to it. If they're close enough to touch you and you can't gain distance, then take one for the team, and take as many of them with you as you can. At least you won't become one of them

I think I’d prefer a katana at close range over some sort of suicide-death-homemade-bomb-dress. A nice, simple swipe and snap of the wrist and presto, instant headless zombie. (Remember to snap; otherwise your blade could get caught in the thick muscle and bone of the beast).

Just keep an extra bullet in your pistol incase you get infected.

It's just not that easy to lop off heads with a Katana. Even with a good swing, you can get bound up between the jawbone and the vertebrae.

If you've got room to swing wide with a sword, you'd better make room to run away.

I'm fairly certain that strategically-minded zombies would go after a major army or airbase first, unless they want the USAF to drop Fuel-Air Explosives on them, or to be ground into zombie-cheese under the tracks of an M1A2.

...unless...Sanis, you don't own a B-2, do you? ^_^;

It's about as big as I'd allow for carrying purposes. I can conceal it most of the time, but not always. XD subcompacts are far better suited than the 4" service model I carry, but then again, in a .40 S&W platform, it can be quite bitey in terms of recoil. I've had range time on XD9 subcompacts and they're fine.

The Brunrial finish on black-tone XD's kinda sucks unfortunately. It's about as good as any other blued steel, so you gotta take care of it consistently. It's not as durable as a Glock's Tenifer finish, and its really the only bad thing about XD's that I can see.

I am thinking about sending the slide and all the external metal components (barrel, slide stop, trigger face, mag release, and grip safety) to a company that does hard chroming plate jobs. From what I've seen, not only is it infinitely more durable, but it tightens up the tolerances on your gun, making it marginally more accurate.

On top of that, I really need to replace the Sig-style dovetail iron sights on the XD. I've got some Trijicon night sights I'm looking at for about $120, so I might slap those on as well.
