History
With the advancement of hyperspace weapons and the ability to transmit energy over distance the next logical step was creating emplacements capable of defending large sections of space against incursions.

UIT’s hyperspace cannon team was observed by an additional team with the task of creating a plausible system of hyperspace inhibition that wouldn’t require the expensive fields of mines other warlords had employed. Additionally, research breakthroughs engineered by the Apocalypse team were examined for the benefit of the defense project.

Additional specifications set out by the Federal Bureau of Military Affairs required the station to be able to dock and supply large assault groups for rapid response to threats. Also, the station was designed with acting as a center for military operations I mind. As such, a large quantity of marines and shuttles capable of ferrying them over distances were incorporated into the overall system.

The answer to all of this was the Impervious-class defensive station.

Technology Explained

Reax Advanced Hyperspace Energy Detector
The Federacy has had systems for detecting the energy surrounding a ship traveling through hyperspace for a substantial time. However, these systems were close range. The Reax team was called in to answer the problem of detecting ships in hyperspace over a large area of space.

The answer is actually two fold:

First, sensitive mapping systems were engineered to read and calculate hyperdust trails. As trails begin to appear the system virtually instantly calculates the trajectory of the traveler.

Next, using negative matter to open a hyperspace rift hyperwave signals are scattered. If the hyperwaves return to the origin area the shape, the sensor’s rapid processing computers can calculate size, and speed of the incoming traveler.

Once one of these is triggered negative matter drive characteristics are examined. Additionally, hyperwave identification signatures are read.

The ID of the craft, its destination, route, and speed are all painted for technicians and the computers of the station.

If the ID is not present in the Federacy database or the craft is traveling in restricted space its signature is tagged instantly for hyperspace inhibition. Additionally, the interception vector for the AIU-R72 is instantly calculated and the device activated. No humans interact in the process, it’s completely scripted.

The AIU-R72 uses a much more powerful version of the hyperspace cannon.

The station keeps all 16 of its units prepped and ready to fire at a moment’s notice. Each is capable of taking out a directed target. The area affected by a discharge of one of the inhibitors is actually significant. When the system goes off traffic in the direct path of the target falls from hyperspace.

The simple explanation of the process of inhibition is as follows:

A hyperspace window is created using negative matter and hyperdrive components. Into this window charged cubatom ions are accelerated. Unlike the cannon they are not bonded to negative matter. As such, the wave of energy never leaves hyperspace. Instead the energy continues to travel through hyperspace until it dissipates.

Ships maintain a layer of energy while in hyperspace. The goal of the inhibitor is to disrupt and disable this field. When the energy shield is lost the hyperdrive will trigger an instantaneous exit from hyperspace. If not, the resulting collision will destroy the vessel. (This is due to several factors: the energy itself is fairly powerful, the hyperdrive could overload due to the ions and the vessel may drift in hyperspace until it hits a mass shadow, or the hyperdrive cold overload and explode).

Each module has the potential to continually inhibit a direction portion of space only limited by the stored amount of negative matter and the amount that can be collected during the “projection” of the inhibitor wave. Additionally, the direction of each wave can be individually articulated. This allows several overlapping fields to be accelerated as well as simultaneous inhibitions in varying directions.
