The Nature of Alchemy: Bouncing Colors I (complete)

In was a stormy night on Koros Major. The only sounds to be heard was the booming and crackling of thunder as lightning danced across the sky. There wasnt much activity going on at the Iron Citadel, though, even if there was, you couldnt tell from the outside.

Nearby, in the tower that Naj now occupied, the Chiss Hybrid was hard at work. The main reason Naj had chosen the tower was because of its location. It was situated between the Termagent Forest, the Iron Citadel, and the landing dock. The view from the top of the tower was excellent.

A quieter reason for his choice was the room he was in now.

At the very bottom of the tower was a forge used back in the planets heyday. The forge was used to provide a steady supply of weapons to the towers guards.

Naj had brought in an old training staff from his ship that his father had given him when he was young (obviously, to keep Naj out of his father's business, since Naj's father was never fond of the boy).

Unlike his staff that had been broken by Tondry, this staff had no etchings or carvings or any other decoration. It was just a short metal rod. Nothing he would ever carry with him, unless he was doing something where he might need to ditch the weapon. Needless to say, it wasnt an object he cherished.

Earlier that week, he'd reread most of his books on alchemy and lightsabers. He'd even resisted spending time to construct his own saber for kicks. He'd probably never use it, so he wouldnt waste the time.

In his last trip to Coruscant, he'd picked up a few gallons of very specific chemicals. He'd tracked through research on them all. Each were fairly stable to mix, and would only create problems if directly mixed in the wrong order, in most cases.

Naj now had everything ready to go, save for the last detail. Firing up the ancient forge...

The hum of the forge's main reactor made a low whine, which settled into a low hum as it steadied its power flow to the heaters on the forge. Off to Naj's left, there were molds for different type weapons stacked up in the corner. He carefully started a new stack, moving them over one by one until he found a mold for a metal staff.

He carried the mold over and set it in the space provided above the heater, being mindful of his hands, so as not to burn them. A few minutes later, the forge had heated enough to melt the staff he'd brought.

Naj placed the staff into the forge, letting the staff melt into a vat. When it was completely melted, Naj worked the controls to manuever the vat in front of him. Beside him, he had three vials each containing a different mixture of the chemicals he'd bought.

With more manuevering of the controls, Naj slowly let the bucket of molten metal pour into the mold. As soon as the last drop poured in, Naj poured in the first vial...

The chemical in the first vial, when mixed, had an extremely high evaporation temperate, thus, when it touched the molten metal, it simple mixed in, rather than evaporating.

The cooler temperature of the chemical did cause the molten metal to cool some, but not to the point that it hardened completely.

Naj kept a close eye on the temperature gauge for the metal itself. He kept an analysis of what temperature the metal was when it melted, so he could be sure to put the upper half of the mold on before the metal hardened completely.

The chemical itself, when mixed in, would help alter the bonds in the metal once it had hardened. The metal was cooling even more, soon it would be cool enough for the next mixture.....

And suddenly, a slight knock on the outskirts of the door.

Naj glanced over toward the door for a moment when he heard the knock. It was rare that he ever had visitors unannounced, and with all the recent happenings with the Krath, he was slightly suspitious.

"One moment"

The metal was now cooled enough for the second vile, so Naj went ahead and took the time to pour it in, to make sure he didnt mess the process up. After he poured the vial in, he grabbed his blaster from the counter behind him and tucked it away behind his back. He went over and opened the door, letting it open completely when he saw who it was.

"Good evening Ishan, what brings you out in this weather?"

"Oh you know. I'm not much for sleep these days..." Ishan walked past Naj into the forge. He scanned the area, not really sure to make of it's ancient scars.

"What is all this?"

"A forge."

Naj replied somewhat shortly. He wasnt trying to be rude, he just had a tendancy to forget his manners whilst working. To most, Naj came across as a spoiled child, but in all actuality, he was very far from it. Even though he was born into wealth, he knew very little of it, due to the relationship of his parents, and the circumstances of his birth. He was only given enough as a child to keep his attention away from his father. Naj turned into someone wanting more from everything, and lost all fear of taking it early on.

"Im messing about with chemicals, working with the metal's properties."

The metal was cooling more slowly now, and the luster across the top seemed more stable. It was clear that it was almost cooling back to its solid form. Naj prepared the third vial. The temperature was almost cool enough to pour it in.

"Most interesting..." Ishan continued his unabided monitoring of the room.

The Falleen watched Naj at work, soothing over the chemicals like a child does a new toy. It seemed Naj was passionate about his studies...just as Ishan was about his. He ran his finger over the viles that sat in front of him, "If you don't mind me asking..." Ishan paused to watch Naj prepare the third vile, "What are you making?"

Naj kept silent for a moment, as he poured the last vial into the molten metal. Almost instantly, the metal hardened, as the cool chemical sped up the cooling process. The surface was solid now, though still too hot to touch. Underneath, the metal was still soft. It was at this point where a blacksmith would start shaping the more precise details, such as engravings, or adding a finer edge to the sword.

Naj didnt worry with this now, he was only seeking to test the metal, not craft a weapon...

"Im trying to strengthen the metal beyond its natural strength."

The metal was cooling at a steady pace now. Naj made sure to not let it cool to quickly, which could cause the metal to warp. Even though he wasnt worrying about the looks of the metal, he wanted to keep the process exact...

"Tell me, are you carrying a lightsaber?"

Shade's race, the Falleen, were reptilian, and his features did possess a vague snakelike aura. His movements were sometime subtle and careful, much like those of his ancient ancestors. Shade moved past Naj to examine his recent compisition. His topknot and ponytail gave a slight shadow across his face, and though he wore extravagent robes that adorned a small hood and cape, his lightsaber was not visible.

"Always." Ishan gave a slight grin.

His saber, a dual breakaway, broke down into twin smaller saber's, about half the length of a normal Force user's weapon. The blade on both saber's was the same, measuring about half of a normal crystal blade. The dual smaller saber's were to Ishan's liking, as it gave him more of a fluid maneuverability. He unclipped it from his waist and brought it into view of Naj. With a twist they came apart. He handed one of the saber's in Naj's direction.

"You wish to see it?"

"Momentarily....The metal still needs to cool."

Mentally, Naj admired the craftsmanship of the weapons, even though lightsabers were not his area of expertise. The weapons were decorative, much like Ishan's garb. The reason, which Ishan was probably realizing, was that Naj fully intended to test the metal against a lightsaber blade.

Naj glanced over toward the temperature gauge for a moment, until a slight 'ping' diverted his attention. Inside the mold, the smooth piece of metal had visibly warped slightly. As he watched, it bent itself again, just slightly...

"Strange....."

Ishan raised a cautious eyebrow toward the new finding. He continued his position behind Naj, watching him craft. As the metal bent, Ishan echoed Naj's statement, "Strange indeed.."

He moved beside Naj and got a better view of the vile. "The properties....they seem to be re-acting in some way."

Two more pings sounded, as the metal bent itself even more. After a third ping, the metal bounced out of the mold slightly...

"That much is certain. Ive seen metal warp when cooled too quickly, but im allowing this to cool naturally...."

The metal pinged again, and this time, it almost seemed to vibrate...

"GET DOWN!!!!!"

Naj barely let the words escape before he was diving underneath a nearby counter. Hopefully, Ishan's instincts were better than his, as the metal pinged one last time, and shattered, sending razor sharp shards of metal flying into the air...

"but im allowing this to cool naturally...." The word's left Naj's mouth before Ishan noticed the metal start to become unstable.

"GET DOWN!!!!!" Ishan didn't move.

His eyes widend quickly as he saw what appeared to be the metal vibrate. Time slowed almost to a stop, Ishan raised a hand - at that, across the room secured to a cabinet, a metal door flew from it's henges - cutting a straight line across the room. It barely made it to Ishan in time as the metal shards violently struck the door with a barrage of horrid clinks. He felt the pressure of the Force leave his grasp and the door fell to the floor beside the counter Naj had taken cover with a heavy bang.

Having a look of surprise and all together shakeness he mutterd aloud, "Good god."

Naj slid out from underneath the counter and dusted himself off. He surveyed the room, feeling anger and frustration well up inside him. Reaching over to the wall, he pulled a shard of metal loose that had lodged itself in, and proceeded to sling it across the room.

"FRELL!"

It was rare that Naj cursed, but all manners had been forgotten at this point. He'd taken every precaution. Everything was mixed just perfectly. He'd cross referenced all his work. It should have worked, but it didnt. The frustration etched across his face diminished a bit as he looked back over to Ishan...

"Im sorry, it wasnt supposed to do that..."

"It is...alright..." Ishan said, regaining his composure.

Bending down he pulled a shard from the cabinet door with a slight tug and rose to see it in the light. He shifted it's position and eyed it carefully. "I do believe it's safe to say something went terribly wrong."

Naj sighed...

"Obviously..."

Without further hesitation, Naj reached for a broom and started pulling a few stray shards of metal from the wall...

"I hate to be rude, but I have much cleaning to do....Maybe I'll be able to sit down later and go back through my notes..."

Naj sighed once more....He didnt like showing this much emotion around others, which was mainly the reason he was seeking isolation now. That, and the fact that he did have a huge mess...

"In due time." Ishan said, turning to leave. He opened the heavy forge door to a welcoming of creaks, pausing in the doorway for brief minute, "Have faith."

He clipped his lightsaber securely back into place and headed for the Citadel.

Naj continued cleaning after Ishan left. He was angry, though not completely sure at what. Maybe he was angry at himself for failing, maybe he was just angry at the failure itself. He picked all the shards of metal from the walls as quickly as he could, then swept up the debris on the floor. All of the broken shards of metal were tossed into a wastebasket and temporarily pushed out of the forefront of the Chiss hybrid's mind.

With a tired huff, Naj turned the lights off and headed back up the stairs, content to settle on a good night's rest.
