I'll be interested in seeing what the "interlock system" will be about.

No thanks. Most MMORPGs are prone to descend into rampant fanboyism and nerdery, and the Matrix is already rife with such a fanbase as it is. I have better things to do than to deal with 3000000 people who are "OMG l33t liek Neo!!!1!"

I don't have high hopes for this. Enter The Matrix was poor, and I imagine that the novelty will wear off the MMORPG just as quickly.

I agree with Dan. I also think the Matrix setting is a little restrictive. If you think about how many people are gonna play this game...there probably aren't even that many living in Zion. Enter the Matrix worked (in my opinion) because you were on a tiny little ship, with a total crew of three. Two jacked in, the other ran the ship. You actually played part of the story that wasn't seen, and it actually added to the movies.

Games that either have no movie/book basis, or are really big (like Star Wars) can, in theory, support a large player base. They messed up with SWG, adding in those damn Jedi. However, in the Matrix, there aren't enough un-named characters in the game. The world they have to interact in is tiny. If you watch Matrix II, in that little meeting of the council, the people in colourful jumpers comprise every single "Jack-in-er" in the Matrix universe. There's no way that Matrix Online will restrict server sizes that much.

Another problem with the Matrix Online concept is player interaction. While jacked in, you're on a mission. If you're on a mission, its operated by your crew. Its not very often that you get multiple ships working together, and if that does happen, you have separate objectives. There's no scope for meeting up with other people, doing a mission together, and then going your separate ways. There's too much risk with the different ships and such. You can't all leave from the same place. There are risks asociated with getting to your exit. Its all complicated, and breaks up the character base too much.

I can't really see much of a chance for you to get that much character specialisation either. Most of the skills people have result from out-of-Matrix things. Everyone in the Matrix (pretty much) is a hacker. Everyone gets trained in martial arts, and with a gun. By the time you go on your first mission, you've already trained (more or less) to your full potential. The only way to go beyond that is to start giving players Neo-like powers, that you can only develop as you begin to "believe". That sounds like the Jedi they have in SWG. I know from experience that the system doesn't really work...and Matrix Online will probably end up based even more heavily on that than SWG is on Jedi.

Ok, so I may be a Matrix geek. But its because I am, and I don't want to have the Matrix ruined for me that I won't be buying Matrix Online.

EDIT:

I just re-read something on the site. Matrix Online is set after the trilogy finished. HOW?! By this point, there is no one left to fight. The machines have agreed to back off. There's no need for the human resistance, because there's no one to fight. Its dumb.

Just recently I let the payment for my Dark Age of Camelot account end without re-subscribing. I had played it for over a year and thought it best to move on. The next MMORPG I pick up will most likely be EverQuest 2. I was debating over WoW as well, but decided against it. I haven't heard much about Matrix Online, nor do I care to. It is going to be another failed attempt at a MMORPG.

Yeah, I don't think the Matrix Online will be great--if it even makes it out of the production stage.

WoW is, in my opinion, the only MMORPG that will be worth paying for in the future. (Of course, I'm biased, I'm in beta and having a great time)

I played the WoW beta for a brief session and I did like what I saw.

Everything I've heard and read about The Matrix Online suggests that it's going to be terrible.

Are you being paid by ArenaNet or what?

lmao, that made me laugh uncontrollably, partially cause shawn does come off that way with constant plugs for guild wars.

You can't blame him for plugging it. It is awesome :D:thumbup

Hey, if someone else can plug WoW, I can plug GW. :) Both are very promising at this stage.

Honestly, though, I can't believe they haven't canned Matrix Online yet. It's so painfully obvious that it's just a cashin title that's going to be about a year too late.

Bold added for emphasis. This is what will really hurt Matrix online. The Matrix hype has died down considerably, and they're going to be hard pressed to convince casual fans to get into this. And, on top of that, with some other very promising MMORPGs on their way, competition for gamers is going to be extremely high.
