I'm in the process of setting up a (small-ish) RP community, on a forum. A glance at my character profiles might give you a clue as to what they are about.

If you hadn't noticed, all of those characters (plus one or two others) are all portrayed by members of the Stargate cast. That's what the RP is about.
The group is set about six months after "Lost City" (the finale of Season 7). Why? This puts it after the 'governmental review'. We will however, be ignoring the happenings of Season 8 and Stargate Atlantis, creating our own instead.
We currently have three "bases" planned - Stargate Command, one on Atlantis, and a base-come-training facility, which allows us to deal with the more character-orientated side of RPing. However, we are planning a ship-based RP some time in mid October, and other bases will probably spring up as and when we get enough players, or when it fits into the story.
We will be following a story trend that unites the bases and ships. We will be able to have some degree of interaction (on some occasions) between one of the RPs, and another. However, missions and such that involve individual SG teams may well split off on tangents to the story. Also, each base will have its own isolated story arcs that won't affect what goes on in the rest of the network.
Most existing characters are taken. At this time, on Daniel Jackson, Teal'c, and Aidan Ford (from Atlantis) are still availiable to be played. However, you are more that welcome to create your own, within reason. You may also have multiple characters, but we ask that you keep it down to one or two per "area" - we want to encourage interactive roleplay, and not have teams going off and doing things with just one player in control. If you want to do that, let the mod staff know, and we can create an NPC base for your team to operate out of. However, if your characters are more minor, background characters, you would be able to have a few more. We will however, be doing everything we can to make sure these people get involved in missions and roleplays...but if you can come up with ways for your people to make themselves busy around the base (character development, roleplaying your job, interacting with other characters, etc), it'll make things much easier, and more fun.
Each rp serves a function. Stargate Command is our main base, which will deal with sending out teams, and co-ordinating other things, mainly with fighting the Goa'uld. Atlantis will be our exploration, research, and learning stuff, also with the Wraith as an enemy. The Academy...that's mainly for roleplaying the social interactions that happen within a "school". We've got a ship planned to take us out into space battle. We may end up with other bases, new teams, and all kinds of new sections to broaden our RP range. We'll be adapting as we grow...advice on how we could/should do this is always appreciated.
We are looking for: team members (both military and civilian), technical staff, scientists, medics, pilots (of the F-302, and other craft), teachers and students (for the academy), and various other characters, from the USA, Canada, UK, France, Russia, China, and off-world.
We also have some non-rp boards...some of us (like me) have far too many theories about Stargate, how things (hypothetically) work, and so forth. Also, we're considering (as an ic/ooc combined thing) having "Area 51" as a location where people can discuss technologies, and roleplay the design, development, testing and construction of the next generation of Fighters, ships, weapons, and all sorts.
A major board-wide mission (at least, a mission that will affect everyone on the boards) is planned for
