View Full Version : Mitch the Barbarian!

Mitch

With his shining gleaming sword, and his manly man-muscles rippling like cords of muscle over sinew, he came out of the East to do battle with the Amazing Rando!

Okay, so, that was a mess, but, yes, I am currrently making an attempt to become a barbarian. Or at least look like one.

I suppose I should explain that there is currently a Renaissance/Fantasy Faire going on around here, and I went last week in a tee-shirt and jeans, and decided that I wasn't Renaissaucy enough. So, I have pulled out all the stops and spent twelve--count them--twelve dollars on remnant fabrics, and a dollar fifty on needles and thread, and I will in the end emerge as the most frightening thing ever: a cheap, renaissance fair attending guy with little skills in the way of costume making! Mwa ha ha!

I shall update you with pictures as I get them. For the mean time, you can all just say,

I'd probably go as the guy who wears a Steelers T-shirt and wields a wooden katana. Because that's about as fancy as I'd be willing to get.

Laffo @ macro.

Ai... the spandex...

Are you going to Scarborough Faire?
Parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme.
Remember me to Mitch, who lives there--
Never once a true love of mine...

Ahem...my sincerest apologies to Art & Garfunkel, and also to English folk music.

Now, see, I really don't understand why Renaissance faires, complete with all manner of men in tights, are fairly highly respected regional tourist draws, and geek conventions, featuring all manner of cosplayers, are shunned by all?

Pictures, Mitchell, pictures, just as soon as you've got 'em.

I *have got* to go to a renaissance fair. And I've got to find a corset dress to wear to one. I'd have a blast.

I would love to go to one, sometime before I die. They look and sound like a lot of fun.

I went to one last year and dressed up, it was fun. I love all the swords fighting...

There's one held in a soccer field near here every year. They've got real jousting and a dude in the pillory that shouts obcenities at everyone. He's great.

There's also all these weird vendors that sell medieval garage-sale junk and swords. There was a didjeridoo vendor there, but I didn't have any cash on me.

You could get something of the same quality by stealing a pipe off a building site.

Faires are pretty silly - except when you get the guys who make real armour, make real swords and proceed to beat the crap out of each other. Then it's called sport. And sport's great to watch

I prefer Medieval Times. This way, I get to eat with my hands, drink beer, and yell at wenches, along with watching dudes on horses and armor fight.

Don't you do those three things anyway?

;)

Renaissance faires are fun, on occasion. Just not more than, say, once every couple of years. There's an annual faire held not too far from where I am that I attend on occasion, just to check out the super cool armorer dude who shows up with some of his custom sets. He's one of the best in the world apparently, and makes about two complete sets of ornate armor each year that he sells to super rich people who have the money to spend on that kind of thing. His work is pretty amazing. Of course, I guess it had better be for $40,000-$50,000 for a custom, hand-made complete set of Medieval armor.

What's the guy's name? FWIW, one of the armourer's for LOTR came from the USA and he was supposed to have a great reputation.

Well the cheapest were around fifty bucks, but then there were some higher-end quality made for advanced players in the extreme keys, but I'm not that good. Those were a couple hundred.
