View Full Version : AFI Top 100 Movie Songs

I saw this on last night, and I knew I shouldn't watch it but I had to, the first 50 or so songs went fast and thats about as far as I watched, the further down the list they went the more obscure the songs got.

I guess thats my biggest beef with AFI, everything old is classic but unless your roughly 75 you wouldn't have seen most of these I know thats a exageration but still.....)

I got a little bored and was curious about the average year of release of the movies on their list, so here are the breakdowns by every 10 entries, well all but the top 10 which I did in 5's. All entries are rounded.

1-5 - 1947
6-10 - 1964
1-10 - 1956
11-20 - 1962
21-30 - 1959
31-40 - 1964
41-50 - 1956
51-60 - 1969
61-70 - 1969
71-80 - 1963
81-90 - 1969
91-100 - 1976
1-100 1964

10 Earliest Years avg - 1936
10 Latest Years avg - 1995

Middle 80 years - 1963
After 1970 - 37 Entries
After 1980 - 21 Entries

Yeah I know its all pretty pointless but the whole age thing with AFI irks me, just because its old and a "classic" doesn't mean its all better than recent stuff.

Anywho, thats my minor rant for the day :)

Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead, in at #82. Haha. I can't believe 8 Mile got in there.

I like "Lose Yourself", thankyouverymuch. :mad

99. "Hakuna Matata," "The Lion King," 1994.

I'd much rather have "Circle of Life" up there.

My Heart Will Go On
TITANIC
1997

NO! NO NO NO!

To be honest, the rest of the list isn't bad. Nobody Does it Better should be higher than Goldfinger though. Eye of the Tiger and Hold me, thrill me... should be there too.

Part of the criteria was cultural impact which is why the Titanic one was so huge.

Eye of the Tiger definetly should have made it. The Bond songs I thought sucked, there were some truly bad songs in there, and some of the older ones were hardly songs at all.

The ones at the top I can see, those songs are huge and everyone knows them but it would have been nice to see a more even represenation of years throughout the list.

Yes, just where is that song? And while we're on the topic of Kenny Loggins, where is Footloose?

You are 10 points less cool for not knowing that.

I always imagine the 2 old men muppets being the originator of anything from the AFI.

I swear, if Jonathan is ever the gratingly-annoying snob of modern blockbusters, and Dutchy is the gratingly-annoying snob of foreign and/or art-house movies, then AFI are definitely the gratingly-annoying snobs of oooold film.

You're a big art-house snob, true. However, Dutchy does that and foreign film, and does it in that horribly smarmy European way that makes me want to burn his house down.

2. As Time Goes By

Damn straight! Although I would have loved to have seen it top Oz. But how the hell can you beat flying monkeys? Friggin' flying monkeys, they'll be the death of us all.

89 Puttin' on the Ritz -YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
Great to see that on the list, but if I would have chosen a Mel Brooks number I would have picked "The Inquisition!". Man, that was hysterical.
