A few questions, because I'm dumb.

1. How does it actually work? Do I need to go to a shop and buy SW Galaxies, or can I just download it? What is the gameplay like?

2. How much is it gonna cost me, after the free period finishes? I don't get all that much money (although I will get more after the summer...the government wants to pay me to go to school...how cool is that?!), so I might not be able to afford it.

3. What are the fighting professions, and what guns would you get with them?

4. What kind of hat? Because that makes all the difference. Are we talking cowboy hat? Baseball cap? A skiing one, maybe with a pompom? One with a feather in? A fishing hat? An army one? It it machine washable? I need details!!!

:D

1.

^^^You can download it there.

2. a credit card or other payment is not necessary to begin the trial.

3. http://forums.station.sony.com/swg?category.id=professions
too many guns to mention

Alex
Jun 3rd, 2004, 11:14:27 AM
1. Ooops...missed that bit.

2. Yeah, but how much will it cost if I wanted to carry on after the trial? And is it monthly, annual, weekly...? I don't want to commit to anything I might not be able to afford, and I don't see myself having much time for games over the summer...but then again, if its fun, I can make the time...

3. Which occupations are recommended, or best avoided? I'd be looking mainly at the soldier-types. Commando is drawing me towards it...anything I should be careful of with that?

Darth Viscera
Jun 3rd, 2004, 11:20:53 AM
2. $30 for the game and $14.95 a month

3. Master Brawler / Master Fencer / Master Teras Kasi / Novice Medic
non-melee professions suck right now, so does Pikeman

Alex
Jun 3rd, 2004, 11:27:37 AM
Hmm...I'll have to talk to my accountant.

So...which of those would you recommend...which is best, in your opinion? And what weapon would I get with each?

And you didn't answer number 4. ;)

Darth Viscera
Jun 3rd, 2004, 11:34:17 AM
all 4 at once is what I'm recommending

or Master Brawler / Master Swordsman / Master Fencer / TK 4000 / Novice Medic

Alex
Jun 3rd, 2004, 11:45:19 AM
Oooh...OK. I guess I'll need to buy Galaxies at some point over the next week, so it'll arrive for when the free period expires...

And I still don't know what type of hat!! At least tell me this...is it a nice hat?

Dont bother with PvP unless you played this game for a few months and know what youre doing. And if you do, dont be surprised if you live no longer than 5 seconds and get laughed at from the PvP kiddies as you call it. PvP, base raids and group PvP is elder content, and when done right it can actually be an extremely exciting and fun aspect of the game. Trust me :)

Rifleman is widely concidered the most effective ranged profession in the game for PvP as well as PvE. However, its not that useful until you reach the master box, and that is hard to get to. Bounty Hunter also takes very long to advance, and combat medic does have severe limitations for general combat (its better for support and hardcore PvP). For new players, Id recommend the brawler professions to start with, and adding suplimentary combat professions (ranged or melee) when the first combat profession is mastered. Alternatively, you could just stick with that one brawler profession, and spend the rest of your skillpoints on crafting, doctor or similar.

Oh, and will the imp uniform fit a wookie?

Edit 3:

Which species are preferable for a newbie? Or doesn't it matter that much?

I strongly recommend human, as there are no restrictions for wearing armor or clothes. In addition, there are no drawbacks to being a human within the Empire.

Oh, and will the imp uniform fit a wookie?

No, wookies are the most limited species in terms of what type of armor and clothes they can wear. They cant wear the personal armor as prearranged either, but have to wear a special type of wookie armor which is inferior to other armor types. Since youre going with a soldier type, I would discourage you from going wookie, since you cant wear composite armor.

I need to stop thinking...how do I go about joining the GRU? Do I need to do it in-game? If so, how? And if there's a file on the forums, you'll have to forgive me...I'm too asleep to remember stuff like that.

The only thing you need to do is state your screen name in this thread, so we can contact you. This goes for all the other people creating accounts here as well, post your ingame name :)

Alex
Jun 5th, 2004, 09:51:13 AM
There is certainly a lot of file there...but I've only got 15 hours remaining...

Good job I'm going out tonight, isn't it?

Edit:

Now I'm getting peeved. This is my SEVENTH (7th) attempt at downloading. The most I've ever got in is 40-something minutes into the download, before the download server kicks me off, my computer crashes, or something else interupts it. And then there's the hour-and-a-half waiting in a queue...grrr!

I'm getting pretty darn annoyed...this game had better be worth the hastle. It looks like it will be, but if its not....*sigh* guess I'll find out tomorrow morning.

Yeah, but I don't wanna waste whatever the english equivalent of $30 is. And I want two weeks free, so I can try out the game, before I commit to the monthly payments. Man, what is up with your wait times and dl times?! O_o (I'm not sure of the specifics for my hubby's wait times and such for dl. I do know I called him at 6pm, asked him if he was dling, he said nho, so i assume he started some time after that... then after dling, installing, setting setting up character... I think it was about 10 or 11pm when we started to play together... so not too long for a 2 GB file that you have to dl off the internet with everyone else and their grandmother trying to do the same.)

Maybe it has something to do where the dl servers in the UK are swamped?

Ok, do this... for whatever server is in the "night time zone" dl it from there. It should go quicker because whatever dls were happening there have most llikely decreased considerably.

The US east coast and west coast servers are running very smoothly, so you guys have options to choose from.

And the other servers have between 98-140 minutes wait time. My response to that is.. so? Let it download through the night, and install it in the morning. It sounds like youre looking at the download status and counting the bytes or something :)

I have used FilePlanet on many occasions. Although, I have never downloaded a 2GB file from them, I sure have downloaded several files in the 500-800MB range without any hassle at all (and yes, I am a non subscriber). Visceras description of the download time and speed for the file size sounds about right.

(I am going to do a download test myself a little later though, sample the speed)

But the problem is that it would need the night, the morning, the afternoon and the night to DL.

Master Yoghurt
Jun 5th, 2004, 03:24:59 PM
Yes, but what speed were you downloading that resulted in an ETA of 1 day and 2 hours to download? Viscera downloaded at 124KB/sec. It could have been some kind of network congestion or instability at the time you started your download and the speed may fluctuate. I have seen speeds up to 200KB/sec. I assume of course your connection bandwidth is not capped at low speed or that other CPU demanding tasks are not disrupting the download.

Master Yoghurt
Jun 5th, 2004, 03:38:22 PM
Just to test the speeds, I joined the queue on the Star Wars Galaxies dedicated server.

Estimated waiting time: 101 minutes
Estimated download time: 1 hour and 42 minutes

Procedure started at: 11.30 pm Central European Time

I will give you a report how it went :)

Well, bandwidth and server upkeep costs money. 2GB files are a bit of a pain in the (you get the picture).. serving to thousands of people at once. By using a third party, SOE can market SWG without the maintenance costs.

FilePlanet on the other hand wants people to subscribe, so this featured exclusive download works as an advertisement for their paid service. Most people (me included), dont mind waiting in a line for an hour or two extra to start the download when the resulting content is 100% free, and you have some rather damn good entertainment for 2 weeks (pardon the phrase). Both SOE and FilePlanet benefit from such a symbiotic deal. SOE gets more subscribers, and so does FilePlanet. Looking at it from that perspectice such an arrangement actually makes a lot of sense.

While I do agree with you that the the downloading options could be more flexible, I am not sure there is so much to complain about concidering this allows any person with high bandwidth internet access to play the game for a 2 weeks straight for free. From the back of my mind, I cant recall any better free offers from other MMORPGs.

Alex

I'm on 18%, looking at 22 hours still to go. That means that, unless it picks up drastically overnight, I won't get the game downloaded until about half past nine, pm, the day before an exam. Which sucks, ever so slightly. However, its a science exam...biology in fact, so its not like I need to revise THAT much.

I've just read through the entire player manual thing. You were all suggesting combinations of professions. I'm wanting to be a commando...that suits the sort of game I want to play pretty well. The requirements: Master Marksman (Marksman), Unarmed Specialist (Brawler) & Engineering Specialist (Artisan). I'd also want to be a Novice Medic. Is there any chance that I'd be able to start off as one of those, or is it too high on the points requirements? Would I have anything else left...enough to bump up maybe my brawler abilities, or anything?

Assuming that I can get the stuff to become a Commando, what weapon would the GRU give me?

And, finally, in the oppinions of you experienced gamers, how difficult is it to gain skill points, etc, progress through the skills? I just wanna know how much time I'll need to throw at Galaxies before I start noticing returns with regards to my character's abilities. Some games I've been on, I had a standing record of 24 levels in under 24 hours (in fits and spurts). I almost manages an hour a level...but they were quicker down the bottom, and slower towards the top...so it was a balance thing, really. That I would consider moderately easy. In that time, I learned about 15 skills over all, although I did have the potential to learn several more...I just didn't have the expendable time to go about learning them. How does Galaxies compare to that?

Sorry to ask so many questions. I just want to know what mindset to get myself into before I start playing the game.

Master Yoghurt
Jun 5th, 2004, 06:12:30 PM
Well, send all your questions about the commando profession to.. me, since I used to be a master commando myself :)

First a word of warning. Although commando is possibly the combat profession with the most potential in terms of coolness, because you get to play with flamethrowers, rocketlaunchers, grenades, heavy acid rifles and possibly some more toys in the upcomming combat revamp, it is seriously gimped in PvP and not nearly as effective in general combat as some people (those who dont have clue what theire talking about) tend to think. True, commando was king of PvE before the flamethrower DOT nerf, but thats months ago. Although, I have to admit the flamethrower is still a very powerful weapon, thats about the only weapon you will find worth using 95% of the time. The other weapons have multiple issues which IMO make them a waste of time, except maybe the rocketlauncher which is an expendable weapon with terrible accuracy and only really useful in specific situations.

So basically to summarise, commando is a one trick pony with poor defenses. And you have to spend a crap load of time and skillpoints just to get to novice. In my opinion, the skillpoint cost and multiple issues related to the profession makes it not worth it.

As for requirements, you need to master marksman and unarmed tree in brawler. Artisan is not a prerequisite for commando. I would suggest only train in flamethrower abilities, and save up the skillpoints for a second combat profession + additional skills like novice medic. Teras Kasi or pistoleer goes well together with commando.

And, finally, in the oppinions of you experienced gamers, how difficult is it to gain skill points, etc, progress through the skills?

That entirely depends on skill, dedication and time spent of the person playing, but also what profession(s) chosen. You will gain skills and notice difference from the first skillbox allready, however you wont become a powerful combat character by just mastering marksman (and even that takes a lot of time). Its mastering elite combat professions which makes the really big difference.

Assuming that I can get the stuff to become a Commando, what weapon would the GRU give me? That one is easy, a flamethrower. Although, it would take a loooong time to certify for the weapon. You have to go through marksman first, which means training in pistols, carbines and rifles.

Alex
Jun 5th, 2004, 06:19:09 PM
Ah. Don't think I'll bother with commando, then. :\ I'll just get the skills for the aspects I wanted, and become a smuggler or something. I definately want to be able to use rifles, pistols, and fight unarmed. I assume by "polearms" they just mean pikes or stuff...can you actually get a pole, ie. Quarterstaff? Or, can you get double-bladed swords? That might appeal...eventually.

I added you to my AIM list earlier...groovysplat101. If you're on, I'll jump on ya. :)

About my test download, its 20% complete and scheduled to take 4 hours and 40 minutes from start to finish. The average download speed is 1 megabit per second. So if you add the 101 minutes, you got roughly 6t 20 minutes in total. That seems to correspond to Visceras test findings, and not so bad IMO. Like I said, leave the download on during the night. If it takes much longer than that, its probably slow connection on your end, or you chose a bad server location.

I will now pause the download, because I would like to actually PLAY SWG of all things instead of talking about it.. :p

Interesting info I found out from my husband...

FilePlanet, which is hosting the dl for SWG, has no UK servers, so you have to choose one of the servers for the US (I wouldn't recommend the Australia server because that one always has a high waiting time due to there only being one server on that continent)..

Actuallly, if you started dling right this very second from a US server, everything is under the 25 min range for waiting (once you start dling, it takes just under 2 hours (that's how long it took my husband to dl it from one of the west coast servers) or so if you have a decent broad band connection).

Like I said, you have to wait for the "night time zones" (on the west coast, it is now 1am, and the majority of ppl are sleeping) and dling will be absolutely no problem.

You can get all sorts of weapons. Alhtough, the phrase 'jack of all trades, master of none' applies. You cant be good at everything, you have to chose. With the 250 available skillpoints, you can master between 2 and 3 professions. From your description, it sounds like master brawler might be your thing. You should then have access to a wide range of melee weapons. After that, you could go master swordsman to get the the powerhammer and the schythe. But if youre serious about an all out combat character and want melee as well as ranged weapons. Youre probably better off with one elite melee, and one elite ranged. Example of this is

master rifleman/master teras kasi (my current template, and perhaps the most flexible and powerful combination in the game)
master rifleman/master swordsman (excellent armor piercing mind attacks)
master pistoleer/master fencer/dirty fighting in smuggler (a template with very good defenses)

Download 7 just failed at 44%. The whole thing just froze. I was in bed at the time, and got up to find it sat 1% further on than it was when I went to bed...9 hours before. I am going to give it ONE MORE TRY before I give up totally. I'm not gonna buy the game (probably) without playing the free trial. I don't want to commit to something that I might loose interest in after a few days. Its just irritating. Grrr.

AB - Actually, there is a UK server. It just ain't free.

Yog - If I were a Pistoleer, presumably I could learn to use a rifle after that? And I think Fencer is one-handed swords, and Swordsman it two-handed...right?

A general question...well, a few.

I know you can be a scout, so I assume you could get scout trooper armour. Can you get Storm Commando armour - the black version?

If you watch the Vanilla Ice thing (which is VERY funny...in the thread just below this, I think), the guy with green hair has a kinda visor thing. Can you get that in the game? If you can, cooly, because "Jacen Dantarno" can have his trademark glasses back. :D

Also in the Vanilla Ice video, they have speeders that don't look standard. Do you "design" a speeder when you build it...ie colour scheme, etc? Or do they just come as the basic type?

Last one. What galaxy are y'all in? Just so I set myself up in the right place....

Grrr...this post has currently taken 10 minutes to actually post, and it looks like it will take longer. I just went on the west coast server, and I've got 15 hours to wait before the thing downloads, right now. Not doing any cpu-costly stuff is a nice idea, but unfortunately I NEED my computer. And, the download looks like its gonna take more than just overnight. In essence, I'm screwed.

Dost mine eyes decieve me? Only 4 minutes in a queue?! YAY!

Yog - If I were a Pistoleer, presumably I could learn to use a rifle after that? And I think Fencer is one-handed swords, and Swordsman it two-handed...right?

Yep, fencer is is one handed and swordsman is two handed. And yes, you can go rifle or whatever combat profession you want after pistoleer. You simply surrender skills to free up skillpoints for other professions. So if you decide you dont like pistoleer, you can give it up for another profession later. You could also be both pistoleer and rifleman at the same time, although that makes little sense.

If you check out the skillpoint calculator AB posted the link to earlier in the thread, you can see for yourself what combinations are possible.

I know you can be a scout, so I assume you could get scout trooper armour. Can you get Storm Commando armour - the black version?

Although, the scout armor is included in the game (NPCs wear it), its currently not a player wearable armor. Its likely to be added in a future faction armor revamp. I am not sure what the storm commando armor is, but I dont think its in the game.

Btw, the scout profession is essentially an outdoor type, which allows you to move faster in the terraign, harvest resources like meat, hide and bones from animals, set traps, mask scent from agressive creatures, go fishing, set up campsites in the wild etc. Scout is also prerequisite for professions like creature handler, ranger or bounty hunter. Learning novice scout together with novice medic is recommended in addition to your combat skills in the start of the game.

Types of armor you can wear include composite, ubese, bone, chitin, marrauder, padded, stormtrooper and others types I dont remember + there are some really rare ones like bounty hunter, mandalorian and RIS. In addition there is the TIE-flightsuit and AT-AT suit which actually works like clothes. For general use though, I recommend ubese or composite as they are most effective.

If you watch the Vanilla Ice thing (which is VERY funny...in the thread just below this, I think), the guy with green hair has a kinda visor thing. Can you get that in the game? If you can, cooly, because "Jacen Dantarno" can have his trademark glasses back.

Yes, you can. Along with countless other types of clothes and outfits. This game is extremely flexible that way. To this day, I still stop up to watch in fascination all the strange and original fashion appeances every day. Some of the outfits are cool, some are hilarious. An image designer can also color your hair green, create a bizarre hairstyle and change your physical appearance in any imaginable way.

Last one. What galaxy are y'all in? Just so I set myself up in the right place....

We are on the Chilastra server. My ingame name is 'Ryland Larr'. Send a "/tell ryland hi" if I am online, or use the game mail system :)

As for me, since both of you are in the UK, either I have to stay up really late, or you have to get up really early, otherwise we'll constantly miss each other.

But, fear not! I am taking this friday off due to some travel I will be doing in the evening, and I'm moving several appointments to the day before so that I can have the morning of Friday open and free so I can possibly see you guys on! See what a good friend I am? ^_^; :p

You are on Chilastra right? If so we will find you :)

Alex
Jun 7th, 2004, 04:16:41 PM
Or, me or Jen could stay up really late, or get up really early...

I'm in Chilastra, yup. My computer is having a bad day (I feel kinda sorry for it). We've sort of had a heat wave and, well, the power supply overheated. Four times. Its got safeties in there to make sure it don't go boom or anything. Right now, the cover is open at the side, and there's a fan blasting in there at full force...so its staying cool. However, earlier on, it kept tripping off. :(

That in itself isn't a problem. However, at the same time, windows has decided to start giving up the ghost. Seeing as I'm on 98, I need to upgrade anyway, else Galaxies won't run properly. But, when I come to install XP...*clonk* Power trips. :\

So, basically, I'm going to install XP over night, while its comparatively cooler (but only by a degree or so), with the fan on full blast. So I won't be on Galaxies tonight...but hopefully tomorrow!

I did get a bit of gameplay in, in 10-15 minute installments earlier. After I sussed how the whole attacking thing worked, I've become very proficient at killing things. :D I did just realise that I learned the wrong marksman skill, but I can jiggle that around, right? I clicked "rifle" instead of "pistol" (don't ask me how!). However, seeing as I'm going for Master Marksman anyway, it wont make all that much difference in the end!

AmazonBabe
Jun 7th, 2004, 04:31:25 PM
You and my hubby will have the same profession. And it doesn't matter which you clicked seeing as how you'll need to climb up both branches to get to Master Marskman anyhow. So you're all set. :)

I like the Star Wars Galaxies slogan. "Experience the greatest saga ever told. Yours." The number I've seen that, and wished it was something I'd come up with is in very high figures.

However, I have a different saga. It is not mine...it is my computers. It has the makings of a great film. It has trials. Tribulations. Pain. Anguish. Anger. Violence. More than the odd black-screen moment, for dramatic effect. It is of epic proportions. And, at the end of it all, it has a happy ending.

Yes folks, my computer is now working properly. No overheating blackouts. No errors with Godknows 98 (SE) messing me about. I finally got XP to install...but all of my drivers didn't. I lost my internet connection. Which I got back. And then lost again. I lost sound. Which has only just this second returned.

Hopefully, once the game has done re-installing itself (I have no idea why it is...it just is), I will, HOPEFULLY be able to actually play a proper game of Galaxies. I hope. *crosses fingers*

d3d9.dll error solved. Next error: something missing in DDRAW.dll. Grrrr...I have no idea how to fix that one. And I can't find the download...

Wow, you were running on Win98SE? No wonder you had problems! That operating system is not worth the value of the box! :lol

Anyway, d3d9.dll is associated with direct 3D. Try installing the latest version of Direct X. This is a necessary step as you would not be able to run SWG without it anyway

FYI, its supposed to be in the WINDOWS\system32 folder

Edit: Yeah, thats a direct x file too. Reinstall direct x

OK. Thanks. I think one of these disks has it on...

EDIT:

This isn't my day, is it? I can only access the test center. I have two links that I can click on...one takes me into the log on menu, same as I had before, but the "test center" button is pressed down, and it won't un-press. If I click on the other link, it takes me straight into the game, where I can log on actually inside it. But that says the server isn't active. What is going on?!

Let me just say, 512 might as well be required.

I tried this game with 256 in my system and it was pretty much unplayable.

Jedi Master Carr

Yeah it is better to have 512 it works better.

Master Yoghurt
Jun 8th, 2004, 05:01:22 PM
Id say 512M RAM is the bare minimum. 1GB is even better, makes the game run much smoother, especially in larger cities as Theed and Coronet.

AmazonBabe
Jun 8th, 2004, 05:22:03 PM
Yeah, I'd have to agree with you there. My husband has 512 and it runs smoothly save for a few hiccups heer and there.

I have 1gig of mem, and I have absolutely no problems.

So maybe it should be:

Required: 512 MB RAM
Recommended: 1 GB RAM

:| I've just been playing galaxies for 9 hours straight - 9pm to 6am, more or less. I lost track of time...

Edit:

OK, I just got home an hour ago. I had an exam this afternoon, so I decided that, instead of going to school, for the utter boredom of a lesson-less, exam-less morning, I'd stay at home, and play Galaxies. I played for like an hour then, and then went to school. As soon as I got back, I logged on. I think I've got a Galaxies addiction...my hands were shaking and everything! :cry

On a different, less weird note, if you consider playing Galaxies, then you should definately consider the GRU. Everyone is all friendly and helpful...at least, out of the people I've met so far, anyway.

Some of them have composite armour which, partly due to the look of it, and partly due to the colours, makes them look like Power Rangers. And I'm not kidding. While I was on Lok (the planet GRU HQ) was on, I encountered the Green Ranger (our very own Master Carr), the Blue Ranger (GRU Doctor), sat in a landspeeder pulled up alongside the Red Ranger, and bumped into (well, I actually walked through) the Black Ranger. Green, Blue, Red, and Black. I also found armour in the same style, but in white in one location. If any of you feel the need to join the team...well, GRU is the place to be. I haven't found the giant floating head in the tube yet, but I'm sure its only a matter of time.

OK...I really do need to get a life. :D

I'm slightly disappointed that red is taken...although I don't think its by a member of the GRU. Ever since the first series of Power Rangers, when the Red Ranger was named after me (Jason), I've wanted to be him. So much, in fact, that when I was little, I wanted to dye my hair black, just so I'd match. It never happened. :( Fortunately, my hair darkened itself, but I'm not quite as talented a martial artist...and red lycra REALLY doesn't suit me.

I have an exam this morning (9AM), but instead of hanging round at school or in town all afternoon, I'm coming back on the train. If anyone is around at around 1-2PM GMT, right through until the end of the day, feel free to prod me, and offer advice. I'm still looking for clothes right now...and after yesterday, I think I'm gonna need a decent set of armour. I ended up getting flattened by a large, Tatooinian lizard, and shot by a spice person. Why can't the bad people just die? :cry

Alex
Jun 12th, 2004, 01:55:26 AM
There are things like armour repair kits, droid repair kits, and weapons repair kits, but I'm not sure if you need a skill for that or not. :\

One thing I have discovered (to my horror) in Galaxies is that the \ key doesn't work...so you have to type : \ as :/, which doesn't look half as good.

The game is VERY cool, though. Once you get the hang of it, its LOADS of fun. And they let you drive a landspeeder, or ride around on one of those lizard-horse things the gungans have...:D You can have droids, pets, guns, speeders, armour, guns, pets, guns, droids, speeders, guns, clothes, guns, houses, guns, explosives, guns, and...um...oh, yeah. There were some people wandering around with AT-STs...and also guns.

Did I mention the guns?

You can have multiple characters on the trial, Crystal. Just select "No character selected" before you click play, and make one in Chilastra. You'll have to do the intro bit again, which is annoying, but at least you'll get to hang out with us. :D

I've got a couple of pictures of my guy. I have more, but there not "me"...I changed the armour colours. Yog probably knows why ;).

Well I'm banned from the city on the terms of being a Rebel and hassling an officer of the law. Before I could get a word typed or even get out of my speeder I'm city banned by a Black Company member.

I explain to the officer Ghara I think it was that I had simply come to stop by and chat and say that I roleplay with a few members of the city. The officer doesn't care. He just kept repeating "Rebel", while I'm covert and he's overt he says go step over by the faction scanner so he can kill me. I'm thinking why doesn't he just duel me. The rifleman that they are, facing an avenger. I then submit to the wining whelp. And let him have his fun getting one shot off before I am owned by an AT-ST and 8 or so stormtroopers.

Earlier though the officer I ran into today was quite the person. I was overt and they we're doing there job understanding that I had come to chat. It was a good fight and a close one. Poison works well. So after being sent to the cloning facility of the nearby Imperial Outpost I trek back to finish a mission close to the city and after that going about my day until I go back to grab the shuttle and then the above incident happens.

Me: Hey dude, which galaxy do you play in?

Me: We should try out the Total galaxy. The one at the very bottom.
him (after a few moments): Dude, do you know how annoying that would be, it's got more cities than any other server!
Me: (laughing)
him: (confused silence)

Yeah, they were doing some major maintenance. Login server is up now, although Chilastra is still down. I usually hang out in the chat room (its quite entertaining :)) or browse the SOE forums when the servers are down.

Heh I remember when it was worse, and the servers were going down every day or at least once a week it was frustrating back then, they just go down when they do maintance which isn't very often thank god.

Achording to my sign-in software, Chilastra has been "loading" since about 1pm GMT. Its now nearly 8pm. What the blazes are they doing?! They're not trying to download the free trial, are they? If so, it could take a while...

HURAAH!!! (I didn't do it)

This is the best part of the game. The rest pretty much sucks. Glad I'm not paying for it.

I went to the end of the world, to see if it was round.. it was not. So I took screenshots.

Ya the edges of the map are somewhat annoying. Especially while shooting people on the hillsides and there just over the line and I can't loot.

Probably two really stupid questions, but:

1. How do I set up hotkeys?

2. How do I make all of the writing disappear when I'm taking screenshots.

Oh, and in case anyone actually cared, whatever bug was preventing me from seeing people's faces has now gone. I now need to find an image designer...I had to create Ozaan's face without being able to see it...so its a little bit blah right now. Just needs a few tweaks.

I'm going to fall asleep, whether I want to or not...so I'm going to go and position a nice comfy matress underneath me. Nite!

So, you know the emperor's retreat on Naboo(why the heck is it there?).. you have to do a bunch of REALLY hard missions to get in. I was fooling around and kept trying to get in anyway as the server was going down. After the connection was lost, I noticed that I got in no problem. So just now I went there, and yanked out my internet cable, then ran around trying to find palpitine. Didn't find him.. but vader is in there. The game didn't seem to notice that the connection was gone untill I tried to chat with Vader.

I obviously got a screenshot of him.. but it looks generic - anyone could have taken it.. so I'm going to go back in and take another of me standing right by him later.

>D

I can't wait for that to come out so I can buy it and play it all the time instead of just 3-4 days.

Eh. I guess that makes sense. It just seems so weird to see stuff from the old movies and the movies put together. It doesn't seem to fit for some reason :|

Well, I tried to keep an open mind about SWG. After all, I know of several groups who play it and I thought that, if nothing else, it'd be fun to play with them. But alas, it is not.

If you pay attention, I haven't been to adament in my opinions of SWG. I've heard tons of people say how terrible it is, but I hadn't the first clue as to what the game actually played like. Now that I've tried the trial, I can safely say that it's awful. Easily the worst MMORPG I've ever played. I wouldn't play if it were free. In fact, there are several completely free MMORPGs which I've enjoyed much more.

The combat is dull and uninteresting. The controls are absolutely terrible and learning to navigate your character is a nightmare. The graphics are not all that appealing, especially when you're stuck in some of the duller areas of the game. Normal Maps do not make up for ugly textures and models, most of the time.

I'm glad I tried it so that I finally got the urge out of my system. But I would never, ever consider playing it on a monthly basis. Out of the major MMORPGs out right now, the only ones I haven't played are City of Heroes and Lineage II. And, despite the fact that I don't play it any longer, I still feel that Asheron's Call 2 is the best of the bunch. I'm anxious to try COH, though, as I think it has the potential to be even better. And Guild Wars is still on my must-buy list, whenever it comes out.

Well, there are people that do pay for it, and do enjoy playing it...*shrug* I don't think the combat is dull and uninteresting. The controls work fine for me. I worked out how to navigate my character totally within a few minutes...I got a little lost, but there were a few people on hand to help.

Sorry if this comes off sounding rude, but why did you just tell us that? I mean, are you trying to reveal the suckiness of the game to people who already play it? Am I suddenly gonna wake up tomorrow morning and realise "My God...Galaxies is crap!"?

Galaxies isn't for you. We kinda got that...your first 2 paragraphs had it covered. I just don't get why people seem to like talking about how much they don't like games...it'd be nicer if we saw a little less of that, and a little more of the positive stuff.

Sorry...I'm tired, in a bad mood, and feeling hypocritical. Needed ta vent. Sorry y'all.

Galaxies isn't for you. We kinda got that...your first 2 paragraphs had it covered. It's not like I wrote a whole lot there, champ. Instead of simply saying "Hey, I think this sucks!", I felt it was appropriate to elaborate on the parts of it that I didn't like.
I just don't get why people seem to like talking about how much they don't like games...it'd be nicer if we saw a little less of that, and a little more of the positive stuff. You mean, you don't understand why people have different opinions and wish to discuss them? :huh

I was doing my best not to be overly critical. Instead of bashing the game without having ever tried it, I spent all day downloading the trial, jumped through hoops to get the thing to install and played it. I didn't like it, and I wanted to express the fact that I tried it and didn't like it.

I do understand that, but a statement of crapness isn't really a discussion. If I was to sit here telling you how wonderful SWG is, it wouldn't want to make you play it anymore. Your opinion is set, as you stated. Discussion is impossible...unless I say something about your statement, and you respond to it. THIS is a discussion...a statement about how crap you think the gameness is not.

Gurney Devries

I was sharing my opinion. Other people can disagree on the points I listed; You yourself gave them cursory retorts. Apparently, though, dissenting opinions are a taboo for you. I'm sorry. Instead, I will post nothing but praise for the game, even though I did not like it. Because, you know, praising a game has just as little content for discussion as bashing it.

Stop being a jerkoff about it. I downloaded the trial and wanted to share my impressions of it. There's no need for you to take my dislike of the game personally.

Just...forget it. Like I said, tired, bad mood. But what does it mean for the people who play and enjoy SWG that you think its crap? It came across more like a statement of fact than an opinion. "Now that I've tried the trial, I can safely say that it's awful. Easily the worst MMORPG I've ever played." How is that an opinion? Looks like a statement to me.

But just forget it. Its not important. So you're not going to play Galaxies. Good for you.

"Now that I've tried the trial, I can safely say that it's awful. Easily the worst MMORPG I've ever played." How is that an opinion? Looks like a statement to me.

Forums are, by definition, meant for discussion. As long as a persons opinion doesn't break the rules in some way, it's perfectly fine for them to express it here - regardless of whether or not it's positive. If everyone reserved their negative opinions on a game, no one would ever know its flaws and we'd all end up playing awful games! :p

If were having to pay to play the game, opinions like Shawn's would be invaluable to those of us considering buying it. That's one of the reasons I see this forum as being useful - as a sounding board for games that I'm interested in buying, but would like a friends opinion on. I know I have similar tastes to Shawn, for example, so I can generally tell whether or not I will like a game (nine times out of ten) from what he says.

Anyhoo...

I'm anxious to try COH, though, as I think it has the potential to be even better. And Guild Wars is still on my must-buy list, whenever it comes out.

Oh yes indeed. I fancy trying COH too, but I still can't be doing with this monthly fee nonsense, so I just hope that Guild Wars stick to their promise :D

Jul 26th, 2004, 04:56:25 AM
No, you don't, but equally there is no reason for you to get so riled up about it. Anyway, end of discussion.

Back to the trial. Only a couple of days left for anyone who still wants to download this. The promotion ends July 31, although I'm not sure whether or not if you download it then you still get 14 days.

Malcolm Trippen
Jul 26th, 2004, 04:59:06 AM
Its just something that gets on my nerves. If its an opinion, fine. But some "I think" words would be nice...it just makes me feel like people think I'm stupid if they pass off that kind of opinion as fact. Just a pet hate. Not like anyone cares.

Dasquian Belargic
Jul 26th, 2004, 05:09:14 AM
No one is claiming their opinion is gospel truth. It's a given that when someone posts something that the contents of the post are their opinion. Prefixing everything with "I think" isn't necessary. Now, we don't need this thread to spiral down into an argument though, so let's just leave it as it is, please.

Alex

The end of the promotion is for the duration of it being availiable to download. When you download, you get a code - that code permits you to have 14 days of free trial. You could, if you really wanted, wait until a years time to use the trial...the 31st July (from what I've heard, anyway) is when the download stops being availiable.
