NOTE: I've erred slightly regarding the SKS. It comes standard with a fixed 10 round mag, but there are aftermarket kits in which you can attach large capacity magazines to the weapon, but they aren't interchangeable AK magazines, they're a specialized mag for the SKS itself. Significantly more expensive ($40 as opposed to $16), but still possible.

No, actually. Automatic weapons are quite legal in America.

The issue here is the law, and how complex (and many like myself would add stupid) it all is.

If you want to buy a fully automatic weapon, there are several conditions to meet:

1. The firearm had to have been manufactured before 1986.

2. You need about $200 to pay for the Federal Class III tax stamp.

3. You need however many thousands of dollars that particular firearm will cost, as its gonna be EXPENSIVE. Not only because of a small supply, but also because weapons milled to be automatic use a higher quality of milled steel in the receiver.

From that point, you go through a series of hoops to jump through, and spend anywhere from six to nine months while you cut the red tape. That, and a few thousand dollars later, and you're a lisenced owner of a Class III firearm capable of automatic rate of fire. You'll also likely be registered with your local law enforcement and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. If that's your cup of tea, go for it. But for most, its just too much time and money.

For those of us who can't afford Class III firearms and the hassles inherent, there are several manufacturers out there who offer semiautomatic versions of their assault weapons. Thus, what we have here :)

Here's a list of the closest FFL dealers to where you live. I'd suggest you giving them a call and discussing what they might charge for holding an AK-47 for you through an online purchase. Should be roughly 20-30 bucks, and then add on the shipping & handling of $20 on top of that.

If so, you might wanna give him a call. I'm not sure if Wal Mart can or does act as an FFL (I'm thinking no), but he might have a connection over there that is a FFL, and if he shmoozes correctly, he might be able to get the FFL fee waived on your gun orders. I was in my local gun shop / gunsmithing place, getting work on my Henry-action Marlin model 1894 30-30 repeater (They couldn't fix the jam and referred me elsewhere :mad), and I found myself distracted by two beauties hanging on the wall.

They had a Yugo SKS (bayonet included) for $165

In addition, they had an AK clone variant with a folding stock. :cool

Now, I'm not sure if the stock is actually capable of folding (Some models like this get their hinges fuzed to be compliant with the assault weapons ban :verymad), but if it is, it's an ABSOLUTE STEAL at the price its going for, $365.

Man, I wish I wasn't so poor right now :(

I double-checked the SARI Paratrooper AK-47 they had at Southeastern Guns, and the stock on it is configured in a way that it will not fold, to comply with the 1994 ban :mad

Oh well.

However, they had a Romanian WASR-10 AK-47 for $319, which I'm seriously considering buying. The only thing I'd have to worry about on those is making sure the wood finish on the stock and foregrip is okay.

I also got to check out their $165 Yugoslavian SKS. Apart from being smeared in cosmoline (an anti rusting and anti weathering goo), it was in great shape. The action worked well, and I even tried out the bayonet :cool. The bayonet itself is unsharpened, but the swivel mechanism works like a dream. I imagine if I wanted to put an edge on it, I could.

And just when I thought it couldn't get any better:

AN-94's are okay, but their 5.45x39mm round kinda defeats the whole purpose of getting an AK, which is a sturdy, dependable rifle with an unbeatable economy of scale, as Warsaw Pact 7.62x39mm is so damnably easy to find, and for very cheap.

As for the TAR-21...:x

Its a non-proprietary design, riced out around a bullpup frame. No way, Jose.

Then again, I really don't like bullpup configuration at all. Anything that forces you to shoot with the buttstock on a particular shoulder is just too cumbersome for field use.

There's a saying that goes "You can't polish a turd".

I fully believe it applies here. The SA-80 is just too flawed a design to begin with. No amount of external contracting to H&K is really gonna help it. Though arguably "ten times" as good as the original SA-80, SA-80A2's still have a lot to overcome. If I were management at Enfield, I'd swallow my medicine and get back to designing a modern rifle that isn't a fixed ejector bullpup.

It might be forgivable if this was a Balkan state that was making this kind of error, but this is the British main battle rifle we're talking about here. They really deserve better.

Can' t argue with you there, but there haven't been any major faults found with the SA80A2, even after Gulf War II. Plus I've never actually fired one, much less been in a combat zone with one, so this is all conjecture.

I'll leave it at this: the mistakes with the original SA80 were mistakes that shouldn't have been made in a military like the UKs. It'd be as if the US military's new Stryker Brigades didn't have adequate armor :|

It goes beyond that, however.

A bullpup more or less demands that you fire your weapon from a certain shoulder only. While most of the modern bullpups allow the ejector port to be switched to the other side, this involves field stripping the weapon, which is something you do not want to do in a live fire situation.

For soldiers on the battlefield, who are doing fire & maneuver activities and advancing behind cover, this is especially frustrating, when you consider that if you're restricted to which shoulder to fire from, that in certain situations, you have to expose yourself to fire from cover, which I think is a much greater problem than dealing with a measly few inches of total rifle length.
