Made it as far as 19 before I got hit. There's a little tip that might be useful...I'll spoiler it, in case you wanna do it on your own. Its not much, but it might help.

The left/right key move is most effective when you are facing the opposite direction. The up key move is good for when you're facing. If they block the up-stroke, use a down key move straight away. That way, their guard is still raised. Yes, its only flash, but the combat side of it is actually accurate in that regard.
