Well, I went to the orthodontist and its official;

My mouth is F'ed up.

Im gonna need braces and want to know what hurts about it. This is how its goin down;

1. pullin 2 teeth
2. top and bottom braces
3. somethin funky with my jaw

i know the tightening hurts, but what about the teeth pulling and putting the braces on?

They'll dope you up with lots of novocaine. You probably won't feel much of anything. I never had braces, but when I had my wisdom teeth removed, they were partially impacted, so they had to cut into my gum line to remove them. I didn't feel a thing, other than being aware that there was some pulling going on in my mouth.

I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Modern dentistry and orthodontics are a thing of beauty. You have very little to be worried, Spada.

And ware your flippin' retainer!!! I made the wrong choise of not. My teeth are better but not as good as they were originally when I first got the braces off. I hated not being able to pronounce stuff right so I stopped using them. Bad move. Now I feel I should go back to get perfect teeth.

^2nded, Figrin

Also, braces weren't terrible, but I hate retainers. Also, I bled into my stomach for a month because one of my wisdom teeth was growing straight into my other teeth. Hooray for two stitches.

I've had much worse, including all four wisdom teeth at once, three baby teeth that refused to fall out and one cyst that wasn't actually a tooth. Then, they went in, cut up my gums and glued braces to them and then I had four years of chains pulling my teeth out of my upper jaw. No fun at all.

Now, in a few days, I get the joy and rapturous pleasure of having a dental implant to replace said non-tooth. After this, having braces seems like a vacation. They really aren't too bad, though you will miss flossing. Even though it takes much much longer, FLOSS YOUR TEETH for god's sake. Trust me. If you don't, you get gum disease and all sorts of nasty stuff. Tightening doesn't hurt, but popping off a band and having to have it cemented back on is a major pain, so avoid popcorn like the plague. Even after almost 8 years of getting them on, I still wear my retainer at night. Annoying, yes, but you gotta do it. :)

would mouthwash do alright? cause i dont know how i'd be able to floss...

You floss your teeth with a bendy plastic needle. Dont' worry, it won't hurt you if you poke yourself. :) Just thread the floss through the needle and get it between your teeth, gums, and the braces. It's slow and tedious, but gets the job done.

Don't worry about getting braces. I had them and I also had to have 4 teeth pulled to straighten my teeth. It's no biggey. At first it hurts haiving braces because you aren't used to it. Then after you've gotten used to them, you don't notice them at all except for when you go and get them tightened.

Oh, and wear your retainer when you get it. It helps alot. And you'll learn to talk with it in so it's not a problem.

Either the "bendy plastic needles" or cheat and use an electric flosser. Braces are a major inconvenience at times and painful on occasion (like for the few days after you get them on or adjusted), but not horrific on the whole. Except, remember to wear the elastics, if you have to have them. Annoying, yes, but also effective.

Yes, yes. elastics: not cool.

Braces: okay.

don't worry, spada! i just recently got mine off and the result is something you have to look forward to!! tough it out!!

OMG braces suck. I had them for a year and a half..

Seriously, braces aren't bad. Head/neck gear (which I wore simultaenously for over a year, 14 hours a day) sucks. I used to wake up in the morning and I would have taken them off and thrown them across the room in my sleep. *shudder*

Brush brush brush! Avoid chewing ice, or eating popcorn! Even if you're good about avoiding the crunchy kernels, the little hulls can slip into the gaps between your teeth (from the moving of your teeth) and gums and ABCESS YOUR GUMS!

I had that happen to me. *shuddershudder*

And the best part of braces is getting them off and seeing the results and having slimy teeth again.

(Oh, if you have braces on your bottom teeth make sure to use the wax on them when you sleep, or else you'll have to peel your lips off of them in the morning. *shuddershuddershudder*)

edit: and WEAR YOUR RETAINER. I still do. I probably will as long as the retainer lasts (at night, at least). It's the only thing that will ENSURE that your perfectly straight teeth remain straight!!

Unless someone can beat me, I think i had braces here for the longest possible: 7 years

Edit: Just saw, but I think Ryla beat me by one year. :lol

At the age of 7, I had seven teeth pulled out because my mouth was too small for the large teeth growing in. I also had a HORRIBLE over-bite that left me where I couldn't bite into an apple (it gave me a large amount of grief and name-calling when in grade school). So after the teeth pulling, I had the braces put on, and lemme tell you my orthodontist was a MIRACLE worker. He said it would take 7 years to correct my over-bite, and sure enough, by age 14, my braces came off and my teeth were straight. Howvere, I still had to wear a retainer for a couple more years after that, but only at night.

And then at about 18 or so, I had my four wisdom teeth removed, one which was impacted. That side of my mouth was swollen for awhile and laughing hurt because of the stickes and overall pulling of teeth. But it went away after it was healed and stuff.

And I've never had a cavity in my life, baby teeth, adult teeth, etc. And now I have a perfect smile.

(Though I must confess, one of my front teeth feels like it's starting to slip forward again, so i'm gonna see an orthodontist and check to see whether it needs fixing or if it's my imagination. And if it does need fixing, no more metal for me (after 7 years, I'm trhough with it). I'm gonna try those invisiline things, seeing as how the fix would be a very minor one.

Actually, since thing continue to shift, even if slightly, while you live, this may not always hold true. i know of a lady here at work that's maybe in her 50's and she had to get braces about a year ago cause her teeth were getting out of wack again. It's all in the genes you inherit, so it's already written in your genetic make-up. Somewhat hard to avoid.

See kids, this is what happens when you're thinking about one thing, but writing about another. :lol

(Though I wouldn't call it a spelling mistake as I spelled the word right... grammatical error would be more precise. And on that note, I need to cute my nails (aka claws at this point). I keep hitting ever other key except the one's I freakin want :x)

Thank you for emphasising my point. ;)

FYI, I tried to wear my retainer for ever, but my mouth outgrew mine. So I was forced to stop wearing it unless I wanted to get a new mold made, yadda yadda.

I was just saying it's not for everyone unless you don't mind going through the hassle of getting a brand spanking new one.

My braces really straitened my teeth out. I used to have a gap, now it lookes like I never had one to begin with. The only thing I dont like and I can see that many agree, is that the retainers suck. You cant talk right and sometimes they cut into your gum. Well they do mine. But that is only if you only wear them once a month.:rolleyes

I had a gap, and horrible buck teeth from sucking my thumb until I was 8. :o

They're all gone. No teeth pulled, just braces for two years. I wore the brackets for 1 and a half, and head/neckgear for 6 months or so previous to the brackets. >_< Be good about what the orthodontist asks you to do, and they'll be off sooner than later.

Did they make the teeth mould using the play-doh esque stuff? I was coughing that stuff up for weeks.

Well the doctor said that my upper jaw is too crowded, and because of it when i bite down my lips dont touch (i never realised that). Also theres something about my front teel out of whack, cause of the crowding. He did some thing with putting his thumbs in my ears and when i bit down my one side clicked in my ear. He says i will have to go 2 1/2 years probably so hopefully I'll have them off by junior prom :)
