View Full Version : Phonetic Alphabet

I've been thinking...the phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Foxtrot, etc) wouldn't work in a Star Wars context for many reasons. How would they know what India is? How would they know about Juliet and Romeo? So I got thinking, and came up with my own. Let me know if you have any better suggestions for letters.

A Alderaan
B Bespin
C Cloakshape
D Dewback
E Endor
F Falcon
G Gotal
H Hoth
I Imperial
J Jawa
K Kamino
L Lightspeed
M Mynock
N Nikto
O Obi Wan
P Proton
Q Quarren
R Rancor
S Sarlaac
T Tuscan
U Unit
V Vader
W Wookie
X X-Wing
Y Yavin
Z Zuckuss

Actually, the Alpha Bravo phonetic alphabet has already been used extensively in military RPs, and I don't forsee anyone wanting to change it. :)

It's a cool concept, although I don't think everyone would know who Obi-Wan is... would they? I'm not sure.

Good point. But I couldn't think of a better O...you've got to draw the line somewhere, right? I mean, not everyone has heard of Zuckass. But it was the only Z I could think of. *shrug*

As for many miliary RPs using it...yeah, ok, but why would Luke Skywalker know what Alpha and Delta (greek letters), Foxtrot, India, Juliet, Kilo, November, Romeo, etc are about...so they WOULD need to change it. Its not like Star Wars is in the future, is it? ;)

Why change what works?

If you look back through various RPs that have been written here, you'll find all sorts of the references to our own culture that don't make much sense in the Star Wars realm if you attempt to completely rationalize their usage. Some of them are actually interesting attempts at humor (some of them work, some don't). The standard jargon for the military phonetic alphabet has been used for a while now, as has been mentioned. It really hasn't caused a problem in any way, so changing it likely isn't going to happen.

Why change what works? Because I like being awkward :p

Don't have a problem with using the old style alphabet, it'd just make more sense if it was difference. I guess it doesn't really matter...*shrug*

There's nothing to stop you from using your version in your roleplays, of course :)

It would vary from faction to faction. Imperials wouldn't have anything that deals with the NR or jedi. The opposite is true for the others.

Guess I'll just use it for my mercenaries then. You're loss. ;)

*shrug* Never claimed my arguement was perfect.

Slightly different question...why are none of you guys up for newness and change? I'm trying to introduce a ship of pre-Clone Wars design that I can use for my mercenaries...but apparently, I have to get something new and shiney instead, which doesn't do the job I want. I want a ship where things can and will go wrong, but there aren't any ships in the right size for that. And what's more, everyone's treating my like I'm the enemy or something. *sigh* It sucks.

You are treating us like the enemy, Jacen. We're just trying to help. We have no problem with change. Change is good. We like new designs - the Imperials and New Republic draw them up all the time. However, when there are already designs available to a ships specifications, give or take a few meters, it is superfluous. It's not necessary. If you'd like a ship that doesn't work, roleplay that out. Explain that the ship has seen a lot of action, that it's a worn vessel, very volatile.

I think our time line is WAY after the battle on endor, which would make your idea for a pre-clone wars ship not work. (If I am wrong, someone please post the correct info).

The only thing I can say about treating you like an "enemy" is, this is a game. There are rules everyone here follows (aka, the FAQ) as well as many long-standing unwritten ones. Fans has been around for a long time, we're "old", we're set in our ways!People generally don't like change, it's just human nature.

It's nice to make helpful suggestions, but would you like it if we went to a place that was "yours" and starting suggesting that you do things a totally different way then how you usually do them? Instead of arguing or pushing your point excessively to try to change things (which just tends to alienate people), work on rping and becoming a member of the community here. Have fun, get to know other rpers and get them to help you with ideas.

While that is totally correct timeline wise I dont see why a pre-clone wars ship cant exist and still work - the best known example happens to be the Millenium Falcon, which is supposed to be pre-clone wars. Yes, it's unreliable and falls to bits too. Hell, Pioneer 10 is now 30 years old and until it basically froze out past the edges of the solar system, was working for 30 years.

a pre-clone wars ship would be nearing a century, but that is not out of the realms of possibilities.

So Mr Cyclops :) if someone is saying you must have new and shiney, tell em to frell off.

Apr 27th, 2004, 01:57:32 AM
I'm not asking anyone to do anything differently...its what they're doing. I want an old falling apart ship. What my ship is won't affect anyone. I just use it to get my fighters and mercs from A to B. What it looks like and what weapons it has is just for the benefit of me, my mercs, and my website.

I tried telling them to frell off...it didn't work. :(

I had a read of your design thread. It works both ways -I dont think some of your ideas unresonable, I dont think some comments in retern unresonable. I do think there were some words said on both sides that I privately disagreee with.

So while I do understand your frustration, I believe you do need to tone it down. OTOH, I do think some of us old and experienced ones should have been a bit more accomodating.

Whatever. Works both ways at time.

Wander down to the NR section and I'll give you a hand out and work something out that will be acceptible for everyone, if you wish

But he did have a point, in one respect. I did have a read of that thread and I do think the crusty old bastards could have been a bit nicer. some of what he was thinking of, once explained was actually pretty resonable.

we should just call this as a frell up on bith sides and move on.

BTW..... POING!

I know I'm not. Its just that, if I'm already irritated, its very easy to irritate me more...which y'all managed to do. Its no one's fault, really...I can't really control it that well. Like my character, only with less Force, fewer lightsabers, and glasses that are considerably less cool.

Sorry, anyway.
