View Full Version : 'Fans - How would you explain it?

Jared Mriad
Mar 7th, 2004, 08:40:57 PM
Really, all I've come up with on the question of how 'Fans RP writing works is that each thread is a seperate short story that ties into a huger story, just like Stephen King's books tie into the Dark Tower Series at some point

Lame, yeah, I know.

How would YOU explain it?

Brian

You can't explain SWFans. You have to see it for yourself.

Jared Mriad

That answered the question, hurrah.

This thread can be deleted, hijacked, whatever now.

Its like a choose your own adventure book, in a way.

Even that sorta falls short.

A mix of round-robin storytelling and character planning is probably the closest.

Kind of like Pulp Fiction. Seperate stories, but they all tie in some way.

I once tryed to explain how things work here on Swfans to a friend and I could not find a good way to do it........WE ARE ALL FREAKS!!! *Runs out of the thread screaming "The end is near!"*

Riiiight.

Its round-robbin story writing with tens of people writing their characters in the same universe.

without screwing said universe up.

I always say it's interactive fiction, or lots of people writing one story, playing out individual characters actions within that story.

I try not to talk about it. :o

well i don't talk about it either....as for being ashamed............that is a different story.

Of course not. It's just too hard to explain, and when you say "roleplaying" people assume a bunch of losers perched around a D&D tabletop game in a dingy basement. It's hard to get rid of that stigma.

It's about writing about yourself doing cool things and having other people "witness" it. People want to be Jedi or Sith because they're cool. So you want others to acknowledge that you're a bad@ss Jedi or Sith. You COULD just write your own fan fiction without interacting with other people, but it'll be much harder to compete with and impress other people.

Not all people are Jedi and Sith tho :)

how about a place to interact with people.. be it in conversations or writing with each other in the star wars setting?

Yeah. I've explained it to a few people, but I know most would just shrug it off as that :(

Thankfully my fiance doesn't think of it as that. He just thinks you all hate him because he's taken me away from Sw-fans...at least, I don't have a significant amount of time to RP with anymore. :p

ReaperFett
Mar 8th, 2004, 02:29:44 PM
Hate is such a strong word. Noone here is able to give such feelings! :)

I always say I "write" if I talk about it. People already see me as a game playing comic reading geek, so it gets glossed over :)

My best friend and my family *kinda* know about it, but I can't ever really bring myself to talk about it in full. Its so intensely nerdy, it would threaten to turn me inside out.

As for your dude, LD...I don't know the guy. In the event of not knowing them, I revert to my default setting of "disliking them intensely".

My best friend knows, as do I couple of others. I told someone from college about it within the first few days of talking to them and they even signed up here :p I think my mum sort of knows what it is, from when Sieken visited and it briefly came up in conversation. Otherwise, it's a private thing.

You get it easy. You can't hide going to DC to meet a bunch of "strangers"! ;)

My mum SORTOF knows. She knows I write, she knows I've done some comic scripts. Not much else. It's like being a superhero. Just because you're Spider-Man, doesn't mean you tell Aunt May.

Wait, she knows. Okay, just because you're Daredevil, doesn't mean.....no, everyone just about knows that.

Oh you get my point! :)

lol. I'd explain it as this:

"You wanna know what this place is like? Slam your head against the wall several times, and you get something close."

I joke, of course. :)

Swf cant be explained...the only way is to show you

You take the blue pill, the story ends...you wake up in
your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the
red pill, you stay in wonderland and I'll show you how deep the
rabbit hole goes.

Just one thing before you take either..I lost the original pills so i replaced em. The blue pills viagra... i think and I have no idea what this red one is..*Pokes it*

I gloss over the details too; to most I write online but to my girlfriend I just know a few people over the internet; because I'm not going to make myself out to be more nerdy than most people think I am, even though I am!

At least I have Peter to confide in. ^_^;

This is not FIGHT CLUB!

My friends know about it, in fact I'm the reason they on-line rp (and my sister too -.-;; ) And me mum just thinks I'm addicted to the internet.

Well.....my WHOLE family knows about it. And a few friends that have caught me doing it, heh. Besides for that, no one else knows that I do this.

And its kind of hard to explain this place. At first site, it looks like a crazy house where people are jumping off walls, poping out of cakes, and just about anything else you can think of. But once you get to know the place, and the people, its like it changes from just a site that I check out to a new life as someone else. Kinda. Thats how I see it anyway.

But if I was to tell someone about it...I'd juts have to say that its a cool place to go and 'RP' out a character how you want to. And a great place to know a lot of cool people. Well, thats my thoughts in a nutshell.

Most of my friends know about it and have seen the board but they don't know what the hell I talk about when I talk about it so it mostly goes over their heads. I don't talk too much about it to them, accept to one who also rps here, anyway. The way I explain it is to explain what rping is and that it's to do with starwars and that it's fun. Thats all someone will understand unless they've rped before and know the feeling of stepping into someone elses life. Roleplaying is another lifeline when things get bad as well, or simply a good place to have fun with storywriting and if you rp here and people think your a nerd, well your a nerd and they can accept that or get over it :) Besides it's true, accept I don't wear glasses.

My mum thinks I spend way too much time with rping and it's usually her excuse for a reason when I'm absent minded. "Your stuck in that roleplaying game arent you? You've been on the internet today!". Actually to her one hour on the internet is enough for the day, which it usually is accept for rping and research (and when I mistakingly turn on the chatlines lol).

It doesnt bother me to tell people what I do. If they think Im a little nuts or odd - let'em! Ive made some good friends here and its a place that Im comfortable at, not too mention the fact that we have some highly talented people here.

No, Im not embarrassed or ashamed one bit :)
