View Full Version : 2004 Oscar Awards Competion

Feb 27th, 2004, 05:11:14 PM
Once again, the Oscar picks competition return. But this time, there is a prize. The winner gets a free @sw-fans.net email account.

So, rules of play. Below is the full listing of the Oscar nominees for 2004. Go through, and pick who you think will win each. KEEP THE ORDER THE SAME. For every correct prediction, you get a point. The one with the most points wins. In the case of the tie, the one who got best movie correct wins. If still tied, it's who got the most points from best actor and actress. Then for supporting roles. If still tied, the win is tied.

PLEASE keep to one post for picks. If you change your mind or make changes, do it in the original thread.

Posting to say what you chaged or why you edited is appreciated though :)

Yes we are precious. I have to admit, I was in no way expecting a total eleven for eleven sweep but I anticipated the Best Director and Best Picture awards and all I have to say about it is that it is more than deserved and such a wonderful note to end on. I'm so pleased to be in the knowledge that the ROTK posters and DVDs will have "Winner of 11 Acadamy Awards including Best PIcture and Best Director".

As a side note, I'm devastated that Murray didn't win Best Actor although I'd much rather have Depp win than Penn, this didn't happen either which was a shame. And I'm also over the moon that Sofia Coppola's talent was not only recognised so well in nominations but awarded at least in Best Original Screenplay. She wouldn't have deserved to go home empty handed and she wont - well done that girl.

Agreed, 100%.

I don't dislike Sean Penn or anything, but Bill Murray really deserved the award. Lost in Translation was a great film, and his performance was fantastic. I was so happy that Sophia Coppola won for Best Original Screenplay. In any other year, she probably would have won Best Director, but being that this was Peter Jackson's year (and deservedly so), the competition was too stiff. But, as you said, her talent was recognized, which is great to see.

I'm not sure I'm *happy* that ROTK won all eleven - even though it's my #1 movie of last year. Nonetheless, I'm very pleased for it. I'm even more happy that I can tell off all the folks who said the Academy has an anti-fantasy bias. I never really thought that it did.

I was really happy for Theron, as it's the best performance I've seen in some time. Rest of the winners were all pretty well deserved too(even though I found LiT incredibly overrated).

I doubt that ROTK won overwhelmingly in all 11 categories. It probably squeaked out a handful here and there.

But the vast majority it probably won by a comfortable margin. The last time there was a sweep this big was 'The Last Emperor' which went 9/9. Oddly enough it had no acting noms either. I guess if you're the fave..with no acting noms...you're gonna sweep. ;)

Dasquian Belargic
Mar 1st, 2004, 12:30:10 PM
He said he didn't expect them to win, no, but he would have liked if it did. His theory is that the good movies never win BP, and then he went off on a ramble about Martin Scorsese never getting any recognition.

Figrin D'an
Mar 1st, 2004, 12:46:26 PM
eh... sometimes they win, sometimes they don't. Scorsese, in a couple of instances, probably should have won one of the big two, but that was a while ago, for Taxi Driver and Raging Bull. Gangs of New York, for example, didn't win and justifably so, IMO.

Anyway... it's all perspective. I liked LiT, but ROTK deserved to win more in my eyes, thus making it a good Oscar year for me. Others will disagree, but that's life. The only thing a bit strange this year was the lack of upsets... there's usually one or two complete surprises, and they didn't happen this time.

b) Nice slam on ROTK, not including it as a good movie. He's a movie snob :p And in that case, I'm glad ROTK got 11 from 11 and upset his apple cart, because it fully deserved it's BP. About time the Acadamy got it right.

Congrats Fig, and to Marcus and the other diehard LOTR fans. I think that last night's sweep wasn't just for ROTK, but for the ENTIRE trilogy. I think a lot of Academy voters recognized Jackson's work for all 3 films. That context is what I think helped ROTK sweep its nominations.

Jackson looked as if he dropped by a Goodwill store on the way to the show and picked up a suit right off the rack. If you watch the extra DVD material or any number of interviews with Jackson you know this guy is about as down to Earth as you'll get. He walks around in ill fitting polo shirts and baggy shorts. ReaperFett
Mar 3rd, 2004, 02:08:30 PM
Actor Bill Murray shocked guests at Sunday night's Academy Awards - when he refused to clap as rival nominee Sean Penn was named Best Actor. The Lost In Translation star looked annoyed when Nicole Kidman announced Penn had won for his performance in Mystic River. According to British newspaper The Sun, Murray later shouted at organizers, "If I knew this was going to happen, I wouldn't have bothered coming." The 53-year-old comedian has made no secret of his dislike of award ceremonies, and didn't show up to collect the Best Actor award at London's BAFTAs last month. Murray has said, "Awards are meaningless to me, and I have nothing but disdain for anyone who actively campaigns to get one. It's a really unattractive sight to see an actor or actress who really wants an Oscar. And you often see it on the show - you see their faces and the desperation is so ugly."
He's a pretty unlikable guy really.

It's more because the source material is taken from The Sun which is, in my opinion, one step away from toilet paper and is covered in stuff far less useful - you can't use ink for manure. The Sun is obsessed with celebrity sensationalism and exaggerate far too much. Perhaps the no clapping was immature but if he had a statement to make or opinion to express then let him, goodness knows Penn did about his lame WMD remark.

Jedieb
Mar 3rd, 2004, 03:45:39 PM
I guess Billy Crystal's "Don't leave Bill!" remarks make sense now. I had no idea Murray sat there without clapping. I don't put any faith in the comments attributed to him by the Sun, but I think it's a bit embarrasing to sit there and not give an actor their due. If you really don't like awards, then you shouldn't go. As for Penn's ovation, he got it because he's highly regarded by his peers. They may not all like him, but they were recognizing a career full of great performances, Shanghai Surprise not withstanding. And the WMD line was SWEEEEEEEEET. :evil
