Sovereignty Intelligence weapon laboratory prototype proposal.
Designation: Sovereign Claw
Mission Profile: Repeating Heavy Turbolaser
Designers: Sovereignty Intelligence
Manufacturers:
Length: 40 Meters
Width: 25 Meters
Crew to operate: 2
With ever increasing conflicts dealing paring capitol ship to capitol ship, Sovereignty Intelligence began researching new ways to deal massive damage from afar. The old Taim & Bak XX-9 turbolasers were quickly becoming antiques unable to keep up with the needs Star destroyer captains needed and so the concept of the Sovereign T1-A repeating Cannon was brought to life. The idea was to have two barrels parallel to each other that ran along side the Star destroyer’s hull. The guns barrels fit into a base gearing that not only revolves the two massive barrels but also connects to the star destroyer and can be manipulated as a turret from there.
The first trial was a success of failures. The gun managed to fire only several times before over heating. The massive draw on power nearly caused a black out onboard, capacitors couldn’t bleed off excess energy and a power surge fried 45% of the ship’s internals. Even with such failure, researches marked numerous mistakes on the design and went back to the drawing boards. After several trial, refits, and tests the final prototype was ready for trials.
The final Incarnation of the “Claw”, as it came to be nicknamed, bore six 40 meter long barrels and spanned a width of 25 meters. The base of the barrel is a knot of muscle, containing sensitive servo actuated targeting systems, coupled with the revolving and firing mechanisms, the base also includes a high impact recoil pad to absorb the force of each shot. The barrels are wrapped in a four diamond shaped plates of armor that stretch the length of turret. A web of quadanium steel interconnects the gaps in the diamond shape plating. The plating is a mixture of high-density quadanium steel and a new compound nick named hard ice. Developed by Sovereign intelligence hard ice is an extremely resilient sub zero alloy. Not only used for its cooling effects but its ability to absorb high intensity energy bolts. The barrels of the guns themselves are veined with a coolant gel that flows through the barrels into a regulator pump that keeps the circulation flowing to stem off over heating. The circulation cooling Is not only more efficient then a coolant sleeve but also doesn’t require the maintenance involved in replacing such a sleeve within the barrel. Under the base of the turret inside the ship itself is a generator independent of the ships systems accompanied with several capacitors and back up generators. The single main generator provides a constant feed of power through various capacitors to fuel the weapon a continuous rate of fire. The capacitors are also used to bleed excess energy from the network so an overload doesn’t occur. On trail number five the research team managed a sustained volley of five minutes from the claw, a few moments after the main generator blew out. Because of this the team decided to add a smaller generator to activate and maintain action on a lower setting.
When the gun is inactive it lays flat to the ships hull, keeping the ship slim and streamlined. When activated it extends slightly outward from the hull and can maneuver and rotate a full 180 degree on both X and Z-axis’s.
The weapon itself can produce a massive amount of firepower in a very short amount of time. In simplest terms the weapon does this by having each barrel rotating on a carousel, centering each barrel over the main firing device. The small primary laser produces an energy beam that enters the turbolaser's main actuator, where it interacts with a stream of energized blaster gas to produce an intense blast through each barrel as it rotates into aim. This gives the weapon a very high firing rate. This version of turbolaser skips the need to pause for two seconds to retain a cool temperature over the weapon and maintains a proper charge to fire. Each barrel fires only once per revolution to keep from over heating.
Two-prototype “Claws” were attached and mounted to an old Mk-1 Star Destroyer for proper trials. Test subject de-commissioned battle cruiser Tarlon. The test cruiser was equipped with the latest shielding in order to provide somewhat relevant results against the capitol ships of this era. Warm up time of the weapons and capacitors took one minute and twenty-five seconds to reach optimal charge to maintain fire rate. Upon firing, the resulting recoil pulled the weapons targeting systems off by 15%. The test was halted and the weapons reset, gunning crews made proper adjustments to the bracing and recoil systems.
Chief gunner Lomain suggested the following: I suggest testing the “claws” proper recoiling configurations before leaving space dock just incase the weapons were needed at a moment notice. The captain wouldn’t be happy if we opened fire and took out any of our fighter or escort ships.
The second live fire testing was a success. Both “Claws” maintained a static fire of 300 rounds for five minutes. The weapons massive energy and heat build up, even with the newly developed cooling system began to over heat at 4 minutes. It is estimated the gun could maintain fire for 7 minutes before fail-safes automatically deactivate the weapon, to cool and recharge.
Technical note: The generators and capacitors can last for 12 minutes with the weapon running. If the weapon is disengaged the option to shunt the spare energy into the ships systems, like shields, is advisable.
The battle cruiser with fully charged shields and armor was tore into two sections at 3 minutes and 34 seconds. Sadly the shield generators could not be salvaged from the wreckage of the vessel.
Currently Sovereign Intelligence is refitting and defining the weapon to make them smaller and better suited for capitol ship sizes. If the design is approved smaller versions will begin design and construction to fit multiple claw gun emplacements over a ship. As it stands now a Mk-1 Star Destroyer and higher classes can only hold two of the weapons on port and starboard sides.
An alternate version of the weapon is being designed and constructed with laser cannon properties with main purposes aiming toward anti fighter and anti ballistics support.
