View Full Version : Anyone here still use IE?...

Even after all the warnings dished out by various people?

Guess what? You'd better stop posthaste.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/04/01/28/HNiehole_1.html

In three words, this is bad. This is a flaw similar to one that cropped up a few years ago in previous versions in IE. The program can be fooled into downloading executables that appear to have completely innocuous file extentions, like.pdf or .txt. If you try to "view" these through the browser, rather than download them to your machine first (in which case the actual file extention can be determined), it'll run the executable, in which case you become screwed.

Worse yet? The flaw may be uncorrectable. As in no patch. Nadda. Nothing.

Options:

Mozilla (http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x)

Firebird (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firebird)

Opera (http://www.opera.com)

K-Meleon (http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net)

Pick one. They're all better than IE.

* Sigh *

Please listen this time, IE holdouts. It is for your own good and for the sanity of people like me whom have to sweep up the mess left by yet another IE problem. Please, switch now.

At the risk of sounding somewhat stupid, does Firebird have any sort of setup/install? Because if it does, it's hiding and I can't find it. >_< Then again, It's 5AM, so that may be a factor in my inability to find it (if it exists in the first place). Wei has it, and I could just ask him, but he's never on AIM anymore.

There is no installer. You unzip the files and run the MozillaFirebird.exe file.

Back to old skool software! (Or proper UNIX / LINUX software which is built right) No registry or INI files! It's back to good ol copy and run :)

Pity there's not more like it these days.

Anyone have a clue what Taylor has? Because by god, that felt clunky :)

If UNIX and LINUX are what is classed as built right, I don't WANT built right. One nearly failed me an exam, darn POC (I forget which, I just know we had UNIX and LINUX labs, and I used both), and they both infuriated me. Burn burn burn, burn that stupid software :evil

Thank you for contributing in a meaningful fashion, Fett! If you want your hand held download Mozilla or K-meleon.

I've downloaded Mozilla, I prefer it to the Firebird browser. It stays.

Zeke is runnin' Firebird. Now I just need to fix all my bookmarks, and I'll be set to go.

Hey, that fine. I use both and I default to Mozilla mainly. As long as your not using IE :)

Lad, Firebird auto imports IE's bookmarks :)

I'll go down with my ship. Besides I only use it for 5 sites.

I prefer Firebird, but they've still got a ways to go before their product is streamlined. For one, learn how to deal with flash. Do that, and you've got my full attention.

:uhoh

I still use IE as does the whole server for my school.

:eek

Hmmm.....wonder if they know about this. Maybe it's time I switch my browser at home. I'm thinking I'll go with Mozilla or Firebird.

Wow, I've never had problems with IE. *Shrugs*

Nice try, but no. Doesn't work that way.

Sure worked that way for me. Here: Un-rar this, stick it in your MozillaFirebird/plugins/ directory.

http://panic.hopto.org/NPSWF32.rar

If that doesn't work, then just get the full installer from Macromedia's site and tell it you have a Netscape browser.

Ah, so it does. ^_^; This thing's awesome. Hey, does it do anything else cool while I'm sitting here fiddling with it?

There is a Firebird installer available, if anyone feels more comfortable using that then the "unzip and run" method.

http://seb.mozdev.org/firebird/

The one advantage to the installer is that it establishes registry entires for you automatically (as installers generally do). It can make it a bit easier to install plugins this way, rather than have to edit the registry by hand.

Shawn: When you say un-rar, do you mean remove the file extension? Or something else?

He means extract via WinRAR

I'll try it out when I get my computer upgraded.

I'll try it now. Thx Chuckles.

Edit: It works for me. Try it out.

I bet if I looked at your PC, I'd find you actually are. Your almost certainly got spyware active if you use IE.

Also, do you want to stop popups? Malicious scripts? IE cant do that. Firebird / Mozilla can.

Cool, Mark, thanks.

Yeah, my comp is a piece of crap anyway, I'll be switching to Mozilla until I get my new comp (in a few weeks!). :)

"In a recent Microsoft Knowledge Base article, they provide 'Steps that you can take (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;%5Bln%5D;833786) to help identify and to help protect yourself from deceptive (spoofed) Web sites and malicious hyperlinks.' These steps include always using SSL/TLS, typing 'JScript commands' in the address bar, and typing in URLs instead of clicking links! I have a suggestion that's not in the Knowledge Base: don't use IE!"

:lol

BTW, I've never been able to get the flash plug-in to work in Firebird :|

Funny. All these probs with IE, and yet Raytheon (big company must keep everything secret and secure) keeps using it. Though we are still using 5.5, with no indication of a 6 upgrade in sight.

OKAY I finally converted to Mozilla, and I am a happy camper. I am so sorry it took me so long.

What I like is:

1- Tabbed browsing. I can't stand a billion windows on my taskbar. I always have a lot of windows open, so this is useful for me.

2 - You can install themes so if you get tired of the way it looks you can change it. IE and MSN9 can't do that, AFAIK.

3 - It is flash compatible. I hit a site that said install plugin. So I did, and now I see flash. It was as simple as that.

Scoll bars are funky though. On my site, the style sets for the scrollbars aren't seen in Mozilla, but I am sure I'll find a solution. That or Mozilla will upgrade for it.

4 - It's free!

My only problem with Mozilla so far is not being able to copy a picture from the web and say.. paste it in Word or whatever. Instead you have to save it to your pc, download it, then load it in whatever program. It gets tedious after a while.

edit: I have a problem if anyone can fix it. I have Mozilla set as my default browser but whenever I click a link in AIM it launches IE, and I dont wanna risk running that anymore.

You can grab the "Copy Image to Clipboard" plugin from here (http://www.texturizer.net/firebird/extensions/#copyimage).

And, while I'm on the subject: I reccomend the Nuke Anything (http://www.texturizer.net/firebird/extensions/#Nuke%20Anything) extension - it's totally http://www.geocities.com/bleepblip2000/emot-krad.txt. As the name implies, you can remove just about anything from a page. Just right click > Remove Object.

Don't know about the AIM link thing, sorry.

Okay I downloaded it and it said it was installed but I cant find it under the "copy image location" in the Context Menu. Is it for Firebird only?

There's links to four better options in my first post. Netscape is nearly as sucktacular as IE.

Not sure if the extension is for Firebird only. Did you close your browser completely and restart it? Because you definitely need to do that for it to start working.
