Unless something major occurs ROTK is DEFINITELY going to win BD/BP. Not sure what's all going to win what yet. Some categories are crapshoots(adapted Screenplay).

This was the best set of nominees in years for my money.

As usual, can't say as I haven't seen many. IMO you need to have seen most of the big movies to be able to have a solid opinion.

As an aside, Last Samurai for costume. Flawless IMO. Same person who did the ROTK ones apparently, which might damage her chances.

The nominations are great, I am thinking that Lost in Translation will win despite the fact that Return of the King is the superior movie

Jan 27th, 2004, 01:44:58 PM
I'm pretty confident about ROTK winning the big two awards. It's won all of the major precursors (except for Director's Guild, which hasn't been given out yet). If another film had been able to win one or two of those earlier awards, then it might be a race. At this point, though, I think CMJ is right. ROTK has all the momentum, and it would a monstrous upset if it didn't win.

CMJ
Jan 27th, 2004, 01:51:13 PM
I can make pretty solid arguments against every movie winning(including ROTK).The deal is ROTK has WAY more going for it than against. When Jackson wins the DGA there will be no question any longer.

Here's the short version..arguments against all nominees.

Start with ROTK. Well it has no acting noms for one. It's kinda rare for a movie to win BP without an acting nom of some sort. Of course THREE movies don't have acting noms this year which is REALLY rare. I think the last time that happened was 1969. Also it has the supposed fantasy bias against it.

M&C has no acting nods...AND no writing nod. That's usually a death blow. Sb has no acting or directing. There's only been like 2 times a film has won BP without a directing nom I believe.

LIT has a total of four noms. The least nominated film almost never wins. MR doesn't show support from ANY technical branches, so unless the actors go for it overwhelmingly I can't see it winning.

people are surprised that seabiscuit was nominated because it is a summer release

it is very rare for summer releases to get nominations despite the fact the movie is incredible and more than deserving of the nomination

CMJ
Jan 27th, 2004, 10:26:49 PM
Actually 1 summer movie usually makes the final 5. Last year there wasn't but....

2001- Moulin Rouge
2000- Gladiator
1999- Sixth Sense
1998 - Saving Private Ryan

Couldn't it also benefit it? Some might want to vote for M&C in some degree, and have less choice.

On the other hand, M&C and ROTK might appeal to the same people, damaging them both. Saving Private Ryan and Star Wars could have been hurt like that.

Does it tick anybody else off that Girl with a Pearl Earring is nominated for so many awards, and is hardly accessible by the public? I know that sure annoys me. I mean, I'd like to have actually seen the movie before it is in the running for awards.

Syo
Jan 28th, 2004, 10:31:09 AM
That always ticks me off, like i would love to see movies like Monster or The Cooler but they are not available to me

i think Monster is up to 300 screens and The Cooler 400, i think they should be considered 2003 releases until they are wide released to the public

That wouldn't be fair, some can't get wide releases because cinemas don't want them.

CMJ
Jan 28th, 2004, 12:22:44 PM
Not just that Reaper, but some movies are not suited to middle America. I don't think 'Monster' for example(great as it is) is film that would be widely embraced by suburban or rural audiences.

As to your earlier point about M&C...my reasoning was...if no actors got nominated from the movie, it's hard for me to imagine actors in masse, voting for it for BP. Actors make up nearly one fourth of Academy membership. Writers are one of the one of the largest groups as well. If it doesn't have support from either...then how will it win?

That was my point.

Syo
Jan 28th, 2004, 01:11:37 PM
yea but this crap of them releasing the movies in 3 theatres on december 31st so they can be considered a 2003 release is a bogus pile of manure

its not a 2003 release if nobody had an opurtunity to see it in 2003

it doesn't have to be a major wide release but at least 1000+ screens

CMJ
Jan 28th, 2004, 04:05:37 PM

I got to see Lost in Translation sure it was only in town for two weeks and I am from a smaller city (about 60,000 population)

and it was released in October it qualifies

movies like big fish, monster and the cooler were all under 50 theatres on december 31st they do not qualify

So the qualifications are it has to be out for a few months...or 1000 screens?

BTW: only one movie from December(ROTK) wasnominated for BP. Seems that you can release films at other times of the year and be recognized.

Jan 29th, 2004, 12:08:40 PM
Besides seabiscuit though all the oscar nominations were the last quarter of the year

Return of the King Release Date: December 17th, 2003.
Lost in Translation Release Date: September 12th, 2003
Master and Commander Release Date: November 14th, 2003.
Mystic River Release Date: October 8th, 2003.
Seabiscuit Release Date: July 25th, 2003.

and even seabiscuit was late summer

are you telling me there was no oscar quality movies before august

what about bend it like beckham, pirates of the carribean and whale rider to name a few

the current system sucks, maybe 1000+ was to high but even if ya lower it to say 500+ or even 100+ theatresn movies like monster, the cooler and big fish do not qualify

CMJ
Jan 29th, 2004, 12:48:49 PM

To expound on my earlier post Dutchy....this is what I came up with after researching....

Only nine films in Academy Award history have won Best Picture without any acting nominations, and the last film that managed to do it won eight years ago.

Here's the list.....

Braveheart (1995)
The Last Emperor (1987)
Gigi (1958)
Around the World in 80 Days (1956)
The Greatest Show on Earth (1952)
An American in Paris (1951)
Grand Hotel (1931/32)
All Quiet on the Western Front (1929/30)
Wings (1927/28)

So that leaves out ROTK, M&C, and Sb.

BUT......

The odds are even MORE stacked against LiT & MR. Films with no technical nominations have an even tougher time winning.

The last film without any tech nods was Ordinary People (1980, when Make-up was not yet a regular category), which, coincidentally, was also the last winner with 6 nominations or fewer. Before that, Annie Hall (1977), and The Broadway Melody (1928/29, when the only technicals were cinematography and art direction). That's three out of 75, or a 4% chance, or one every 25 years.

9 wins in 75 years = 0.12 wins/year, or a win every 8.33 years. Braveheart was 8 years ago, and The Last Emperor was 8 years before that, so we're right on target for another one.

Since ROTK will win the DGA...has won the PGA...it seems to be in the best shape. History is against ALL of the nominees.

BEST PICTURE
**THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
LOST IN TRANSLATION
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
MYSTIC RIVER
SEABISCUIT

What can I say - biggest lock in years? It sure seems that way.

DIRECTING
CITY OF GOD
**THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
LOST IN TRANSLATION
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
MYSTIC RIVER

Honestly, I think Jackson is a bigger lock than his film is.

ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE
Johnny Depp - PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL
Ben Kingsley - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Jude Law - COLD MOUNTAIN
**Bill Murray - LOST IN TRANSLATION
Sean Penn - MYSTIC RIVER

The late buzz seems to be favoring Murray and Depp, but Penn is still alive. I would not be surprised with any of the three winning.

ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Alec Baldwin - THE COOLER
Benicio Del Toro - 21 GRAMS
Djimon Hounsou - IN AMERICA
**Tim Robbins - MYSTIC RIVER
Ken Watanabe - THE LAST SAMURAI

Robbins has won nearly everything so far. Hard to pick against him, despute the fact that this is a stacked field.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE
Keisha Castle-Hughes - WHALE RIDER
Diane Keaton - SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE
Samantha Morton - IN AMERICA
**Charlize Theron - MONSTER
Naomi Watts - 21 GRAMS

One of the best performances I've ever seen. Keisha may pull the ingenue upset, but I sincerley doubt it.

ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Shohreh Aghdashloo - HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
Patricia Clarkson - PIECES OF APRIL
Marcia Gay Harden - MYSTIC RIVER
Holly Hunter - THIRTEEN
**Renée Zellweger - COLD MOUNTAIN

Zellwegger has won most of the precursors, but Supporting Actress is famous for being an upset category. I'm staying with her though, because this is her 3rd staright nomination - she has sort of a "due" factor.

ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
BROTHER BEAR
**FINDING NEMO
THE TRIPLETS OF BELLEVILLE

Maybe a bigger lock than ROTK.

ART DIRECTION
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
THE LAST SAMURAI
**THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
SEABISCUIT

I think ROTK should win this handily. If an upset occurs, it'd be GWAPE.

CINEMATOGRAPHY
CITY OF GOD
COLD MOUNTAIN
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD
**SEABISCUIT

One of the most competive fields of the evening. I'm going with Sb because it won the Guild.

COSTUME DESIGN
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING
THE LAST SAMURAI
**THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

Will Dickinson split her vote allowing another film to win? That's the only scenario that would prevent ROTK from winning.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
BALSEROS
CAPTURING THE FRIEDMANS
**THE FOG OF WAR
MY ARCHITECT
THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND

Errol Morris deserves an Oscar. He's LOOOONG overdue. A true master of the doc.

FERRY TALES

Crap shoot.

FILM EDITING
**CITY OF GOD
COLD MOUNTAIN
THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

CoG was very noted for it's editing. Plus it's surprising 4 nominations show it has alot of love. I expect it to get one win - and this seems the most likely category.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
**THE BARBARIAN INVASIONS

THE TWILIGHT SAMURAI

ROTK has already won here.

MUSIC (SCORE)
