This is *the* best indicator there is.
CLINT EASTWOOD - Mystic River
SOFIA COPPOLA - Lost in Translation
PETER WEIR - Master and Commander
PETER JACKSON - Return of the King
GARY ROSS - Seabiscuit
No nod for Minghella. CM may be in trouble. I think this seals a nod for Sb. :D
My five predicted nominees for BP now are.....
Mystic River
Cold Mountain(but no director...Coppola will get it's spot)
Master and Commander
Return of the King
Seabiscuit

I'll guess Weir will win.

Does this mean Master and Command will get a BP nod?

I think M&C is in. Not 100% sure, but it's shown up in most of the big precursors so far.

I have a thought/question. Would you say this category is harder to judge now due to SFX-heavy movies becoming Oscar contenders?

Not particularly.

I don't wanna dig them all up...but today ROTK became the first film to ever be nominated for all 13 Guilds as they currently stand('American Beauty' was nominated for all of the available guilds in the '99 award season though).
Sb was nominated in 12...all but Visual Effects.

Jackson crowned by DGA
'Rings' shepherd's win could foreshadow Oscar
By DAVE MCNARY
Jackson
The Directors Guild of America has chosen Peter Jackson for his work on "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" for its top film honor.
Jackson topped Sofia Coppola (Focus' "Lost in Translation"), Clint Eastwood (Warner's "Mystic River"), Gary Ross (Universal's "Seabiscuit") and Peter Weir (Fox's "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World").
Jackson, who helmed all three "Lord of the Rings" films, received the honor Saturday night at the Century Plaza Hotel from Rob Marshall, who won last year for "Chicago."
The victory underlines Jackson's status as a front-runner for the Best Director Academy Award. The DGA Awards have been reliable bellwethers of the Oscars, since the winners have been the same in both kudos events for 49 of the last 55 years.
The DGA and Academy split last year with the directors opting for Marshall while the Oscar went to Roman Polanski for "The Pianist."
DGA awards are selected by feature directors, TV helmers, associate directors, assistant directors, stage managers and unit production managers; this year's Oscar noms will be made by 372 members of the Academy's directors' branch.
Jackson also won a Golden Globe for directing "Return of the King" along with top awards from the L.A. and Chicago Film Critics.
"Return of the King" has grossed about $350 million domestically and nearly $600 million overseas, making it the second highest worldwide performer of all time after "Titanic."

Only the SAG to go and if ROTK wins ensmble, it's over. Give the awards already.

Actually there is the WGA as well. I don't think ROTK will win the WGA and it's SAG prospects are 50/50. Not that it matters, ROTK is almost unstoppable now...and even with those defeats would be.

ROTK won the BAFTA for Best Picture, but Peter Weir won Best Director for "Master and Commander."

Think so.

Yes, that is the case, FOTR won best picture and Jackson won director. Then i probably wouldnt read too much into this. I'd say that if Jacksin had not won the FOTR BAFTA he would have got it now.

Wow... ROTK won the SAG for Best Ensemble Cast. That was a bit surprising, but certainly a welcome one.

ROTK won awards from the DGA, SAG, PGA, CDG, ADG, VES, Make-up, CES, and a couple of others I can't remember
American Splendor won the WGA
Lost in Translation won the WGA
Seabiscuit won the ASC
Master and Commander won the CAS
I think that's the overview. A few guilds gave out multiple awards, so movies like POTC also were awarded by the makeup and visual effectssocieties - but I didn't feel the need to pull up every single thing. ;)

How about Johnny Depp winning best actor at SAG? Does he have a chance at Best Actor?
CMJ

I think Actor has turned into a crap shoot. The only shockers now would be Kingsley and Law. The other three guys are neck and neck.
