Good thing I dont drive one, eh? Welcome to my new car! The frikking brilliant Subaru Forester XT, WRX eater, V8 belter and killer of ricers everywhere. Two kills to it's name are a VT Commodore with the Gen III 5.7 and a N15 Pulsar with a highly modded SR20 turbo.

To give you some idea how brutally quick the XT is, it will give the new GTO more than just a serious fright. The XT will beat it if the GTO driver aint caning it to the max. The XT also has two very decent kills to it's name now. More will be racked up by the 'family' wagon that rips the quarter mile in 13.9. Marcus is very, very happy. The XT is bloody brilliant. Turly earns the Sport's Wagon tag.

Ahh yes, but your car doesn't have bobbling sumo wrestlers in the back, so therefore my Falcon is "teh winner."

And it would still have to pull it's finger out against a family of five and their dog. You'ld have to run the XT down, because it would grab a few car length off the line. AWD + turbo 2.5 = fuuuuuun
(When it comes to vette's I much prefer late 80's quad cam. Those things were also awesome handlers. Which is odd, because most US cars are set up with waaaaay too much understeer. The four cam seemed to have escaped that curse)
If there was somethign to pick on with the XT, it's the tyres. Geolander = crap. Other than that, you'ld never expect a wagon to be so quick everywhere.

Somebody was selling a 1978 vette with under 15,000 miles on it for 10 grand. I really wanted to give that one a looking-over.

I'm getting my car on wednesday.
Yeah, the scooby might take the Vette for 30 or maybe even 60 feet, but after that 400HP mated to simliar weight wins. Or the 2k5 Z06's rumored 500 HP from 6 liters.

About 300-400 feet. XT's have much lower gearing (4.444 final drive), so the torque muliplier is higher. Once you get above 100kph, yeah the Vette should pull away. From memory, the GTS Monaro (300Kw/450hp, 1750kg) traps about 185kph when doing a 13.3. The XT traps 157 doing 13.9.

Vette only weighs 1413 kilos.

Gear ratios - XT gives you that torque multiplier. The Vette appears to have a 3.45 final drive. XT has 4.444, 1st gear of 3.45, second of 1.9457, third of 1.366. Fourth and firth are both overdriven. Your Vette has to overcome the inital jump of the XT, which is considerable, then run it down, which will take some distance. While your Vette would get to 100kph faster in elasped time, the XT at the same ET is about 10kph slower but further down the road.

Look anyone of those will kill your freaking SUV...

That's actually highly doubtful, Slayn. I didn't believe the Forester was as good, and fast, as it is, but I've just read the specs, and, it would more than likely beay those RX-7s.
Also, the Forester isn't an SUV, it's a station wagon.

Good thing it aint an SUV then, eh? It's not a Ute for starters.
I hate to tell you, but I know exactly what RX-7's do, what they are, and what to do to them as I rallied then, raced them, crashed them, modified them, had a super rare RX-2 coupe for seven years, my brother has a RX-2 that would embarrass a lot of those things, as well as helped out on a Series II that does 11's on street tyres. The Series VI-VII RX-7 manual is about as quick as a XT manual on a good turbo day. Even then, you would have to wring the neck of the RX-7, due to the fact it's torque down low is much less. The IV and V are lard butts, even with the 13B turbo. You have to do some good mods to stand a hope.
The I, II's and III's arent even on the same planet. Even if the II's and III's are wonderful handlers and I love the II's a lot, they need a lot of mods in a straight line.

Most of those sevens had well over 400HP to the wheels, but I thought that was an SUV, so I take that back. The last black one with the ugly " Veilside" stuff on it had 600+ and with different rims could run well under 8. I love sevens, and am particall to the second gen, but the third gen, once you know what you're doing is IMO, the best platform to work with. ( helps to have a good job, and work so much you don't get to drive the freaking thing. )

Ehh....sub-par.
I've seen a few people who have those, they're pretty sharp looking, but nothing really facinating. If you wanted a fast car, why don't you buy an actually nice fast sportscar, and not an aussie wagon.

Psst, it's a Japanese wagon, and costs less and gets better fuel economy than a supercar does. The insurance is also cheaper, and it's less likely to get stolen.

You really have no idea about the XT. For one, it's Japanese. And Japs like to do screwy and out there things to the most unlikely cars. Add to that the other advantages and you have me sold. I bet you aint driven a Forester either. Maybe you should. It's a surprise packet.
And it is hellishly quick
And as for the why not get a real sportscar.... there's a Galant VR-4 RS rally beast in the garage. 4G63 1G turbo with all the RS / RS-E mods, running 15 psi, close ratio forest option box, probably one of the best handing AWD's you can get, extremely brilliant brakes, crap loads of seam welding and rollcage, racing seats, quick shift...... It is a feather slower than the XT on the quarter, only because the XT comes on power earlier. The turbo on the Galant comes on like a bomb explosion. WHHHHEEEEE!!!

* shakes head * boxer engines are weird...
Marcus Telcontar
Jan 9th, 2004, 02:14:55 AM
Boxer motors were not a rare as they now when air cooling was more normal. The boxer is the best format for air cooling. They also have torque and mass advantages over normal inlines or V's - they lower the centre of gravity, allow a flatter bonnet line for better aerodynamics. Alfa's used to have boxer motors, VW of course witht he Beetle - they are also useful for planes and motorbikes.
Flat crank flat eights used to be THE race motor to have in the 70's.
In cars, now only Porsche and Subaru really use them.
If you want a weird motor, VW's W-series is weird.

I said weird not bad... I don't really know pistons so a complex piston set up is even farther out there.
