View Full Version : Looking Ahead 2004

I decided to dedicate a thread to the upcoming releases to ring in the New Year (-up til March). Cut and pasted from IMDB. Should be stated that any slated release is tentative. There were many more films but these were the ones that caught my attention most. The first three months have, IMO, a slew of bad films.

JANUARY 2nd

Japanese Story
[12/31 --LA/NY]

Director:
Sue Brooks

Stars:
Toni Collette
Gotaro Tsunashima
Lynette Curran

Samuel Goldwyn Films: Sharing equal disdain for one another, a geologist and a Japanese businessman nevertheless are thrown together on a trip far out into the West Australian desert. Their predicament goes from bad to worse after they become stranded and must rely on one another for support and survival. Lost amongst the deluge at Cannes 2003, Story was still a huge hit in its native Australia and plucky enough to score a modest release here in the States, where the mere mention of Toni Collette's name causes the indie set to squeal with glee.

JANUARY 23rd

The Butterfly Effect

Director:
Eric Bress
J. Mackye Gruber

Stars:
Ashton Kutcher
Amy Smart
Melora Walters

New Line Cinema: While trying to come to terms with painful memories from his childhood, Evan Treborn discovers his ability to travel back in time and alter his personal history. Naturally, every change he makes affects his future, however. Despite the heavy release date shuffling, we have to give Kutcher snaps for branching out, in an R-rated feature, no less. But with writer-turned-director Bress (responsible for Final Destination 2's screenplay) guiding the production, we're hoping Butterfly won't be all, "I've created a rift in the future's design!"

Dirt
[limited]

Director:
Michael Covert
Tracy Fraim

Stars:
Tracy Fraim
Michael Covert
Tara Chocol

Mac Releasing LLC: When Junior (Covert) and Scooter's (Fraim) mother dies, they try and find a woman to take care of them, as they have no clue how to fend for themselves. Their first attempts, with hookers and strippers, are disastrous. Desperate, they kidnap DeDe (Chocol) from the grocery store, only to find that she's a willing captive (it's better than living with her abusive husband (Crooke), who also happens to be the local sheriff). But when Dede's husband gets even with the boys, they plot a larger crime to exact their revenge. Director Covert is back, with a handful of stars from his debut, American Strays, in tow. It's worth noting that this is indie distributor MAC Releasing's third release; they shipped out Washington Heights a year ago.

Touching the Void
[LA/NY]

Director:
Kevin Macdonald

Stars:
Simon Yates
Joe Simpson
Brendan Mackey
Nicholas Aaron

The true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. Kevin Macdonald (One Day in September), his documentary crew, and two very brave actors traveled back to Siula Grande to recreate the events that befell Joe Simpson and Simon Yates. This looks amazing.

JANUARY 30th

The Big Bounce

Director:
George Armitage

Stars:
Owen Wilson
Morgan Freeman
Gary Sinise
Sara Foster

Warner Bros: Surfer/drifter/con man Jack Ryan (Wilson) makes his way to Hawaii and lands a job caring for Walter Crewes (Freeman), a judge on the island. His new gig leads to an involvement with a beautiful, enterprising woman (Foster), who's really the lover of a real estate tycoon (Sinise) - a shady businessman and longtime rival of Judge Crewes. Ryan, naturally, has to choose between the woman, the money, or the honorable path. It was only a matter of time before Wilson would land a lead role in a "sexy noir thriller" type of production. And Armitage, who last directed John Cusack in Grosse Pointe Blank, certainly knows a thing or two about working with charming, oddly beautiful actors.

FEBRUARY 13th

50 First Dates

Director:
Peter Segal

Stars:
Adam Sandler
Drew Barrymore
Rob Schneider
Sean Astin

Columbia Pictures: Henry Roth (Sandler) is a veterinarian living in Hawaii who enjoys the company of vacationing women. He leaves the playboy life behind after he falls for Lucy (Barrymore), who suffers from short-term memory loss. Since she can never remember meeting him, Henry has to romance Lucy every single day and hope that she falls for him.Proving that the winter doesn't have to be the dumping ground for crappy movies, Columbia's giving Kisses for Valentine's Day; in fact, it has the exact same release date as The Wedding Singer. Sandler and Barrymore, both older and wiser, know that audiences want to see them goofily stumble into love, and have resigned to give the people what they want.

FEBRUARY 20th

Kill Bill: Vol. 2

Director:
Quentin Tarantino

Stars:
Uma Thurman
David Carradine
Michael Madsen
Daryl Hannah

The Bride continues her vengeance quest against her ex-boss, Bill, and his associates.Tarantino's back in the territory that first brought him fame, with a lead role scripted for one of his most memorable stars. Will it be huge? Of course it will. Will there be backlash against the decision to split Bill into two 90-minute films? Sure, but we imagine this decision was made in favor of editing the movie down too much, as his big studio daddy is known to do.

Welcome to Mooseport

Director:
Donald Petrie

Stars:
Gene Hackman
Ray Romano
Maura Tierney

20th Century Fox Film Corporation: After his term comes to an end, the former president (Hackman) retires to a small New England town. His neighbors convince him to run for mayor, but, in an effort to keep things honest, the owner of the local hardware store (Romano) opts to run against him. Naturally, what should have been a fair race turns into an all-out war.Director Petrie is riding high after two back-to-back successes, Miss Congeniality and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Make it three in a row, because he's assembled an excellent cast for a light political comedy.

FEBRUARY 27th

The Passion of the Christ
[2/25]

Director:
Mel Gibson

Stars:
James Caviezel
Monica Bellucci

Newmarket Film Group: A film detailing the final hours and crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Non-subtitled; in Aramaic, Latin and Hebrew. Wellspring Media steps out on a limb, distributing what's easily the most controversial film in recent memory. In the wake of this film's release, we're expecting protests, pickets, and wildly divergent opinions. Finally, for some, it will be thrilling to take in a movie and gauge the audience's reaction.

Broken Lizard's Club Dread

Director:
Jay Chandrasekhar

Stars:
Jay Chandrasekhar
Bill Paxton
Kevin Heffernan

20th Century Fox Film Corporation: When a serial killer interrupts up the fun at the swanky Club Dread -- a hedonistic island paradise for swingers -- it's up to the club's staff to stop the violence ... or at least hide it! Fox Searchlight released Broken Lizard's Super Troopers almost exactly two years ago, and watched it become one of their biggest hits to date. With Paxton on board, they look to repeat their success.

MARCH 5th

Hidalgo

Director:
Joe Johnston

Stars:
Viggo Mortensen
Omar Sharif
Zuleikha Robinson

Touchstone Pictures: The true story of Frank T. Hopkins, a Pony Express courier who, along with his horse Hidalgo, travels to Saudi Arabia to participate in a long-distance race that turns into a round-the-world adventure. Director Johnson has plenty of family films under his belt to net a big win for Disney, and his experience as an art director is worth noting here, too. Handsome Viggo's made a smart post-LotR choice by trying his hand at a different kind of historical epic...alongside the man who defines the genre, Omar Sharif.

Starsky & Hutch

Director:
Todd Phillips

Stars:
Ben Stiller
Owen Wilson
Snoop Dogg
Vince Vaughn

Dimension Films: Street-smart detectives Starsky (Stiller) and Hutch (Wilson) are on the trail of Reese Feldman (Vaughan), a drug dealer turned white collar criminal. Relying on tips from smooth-talking informer Huggy Bear (Dogg) and their Ford Torino hot rod, they screech off to fight their toughest battle yet.Since the Charlie's Angels films have made TV show adaptations safe for the time being, Warner Bros. was hot to jump into bed with Dimension Films to make S&H. And the mounting production costs - to get that sweaty, authentic 70s look, no doubt - haven't made either studio jumpy, from what we understand. Meanwhile, look for the homoerotic overtones to be at an all-time high -- higher than even Zoolander, according to leakage from the set.

MARCH 19th

Dawn of the Dead

Director:
Zack Snyder

Stars:
Sarah Polley
Ving Rhames
Mekhi Phifer
Jake Weber

Universal Pictures: As a plague-like event unleashes armies of flesh-eating zombies, a nurse (Polley), a police officer (Rhames), and a clutch of survivors hole up in a shopping mall in a desperate fight for their lives....and the funny thing is, Sarah Polley's a vegetarian. There's no word yet this film is an indicator that George A. Romero's close to getting his wish - making the fourth installment in his classic Dead series. And with director Snyder, who has somehow emerged from TV commercial obscurity, at the helm of this project, we're a bit dubious -- no matter how huge indie horror films have become in the last year. Screenwriter James Gunn, however, is a beacon: he envisions this update to be incredibly gory and a testament to survivors in a world where the rules have completely changed.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
[limited]

Director:
Michel Gondry

Stars:
Jim Carrey
Kate Winslet
Tom Wilkinson

Focus Features: When Joel (Carrey) discovers that his girlfriend Clementine (Winslet) has had the memories of their relationship erased, he decides to do the same. He contacts Dr. Howard Mierzwaik (Wilkinson), the inventor of the process, and gradually his memories disappear. Problem is, he starts to remember the passion that fueled the early stages of their relationship, and now he literally can not get Clementine out of his head.Gondry didn't really storm out of the gates with his first Kaufman-scripted venture, Human Nature, but maybe he's learned some new tricks since then. And, okay, it's very likely that Spotless will have the superior script, too. It'll be interesting to see if Carrey can earn the same acclaim as Nicolas Cage in Adaptation., and whether he can drag his film into profitability as well.

MARCH 26th

Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed

Raja Gosnell

Stars:
Freddie Prinze Jr.
Sarah Michelle Gellar
Matthew Lillard
Linda Cardellini
Neil Fanning

Warner Bros. Pictures Inc: The Mystery, Inc. gang must contend with a masked villain who unleashes scary monsters Captain Cutler, The Creeper and The 10,000 Volt Ghost in his attempt to take over Coolsville. Jinkies! Scooby-Doo 3 is in development already, with fresh guns handling the script instead of James Gunn (who's got dueling movies this week, what with the Dawn of the Dead remake). Since this is the type of movie that spawns hundreds of news items, all the good secrets (Seth Green, Alicia Silverstone, Ruben Studdard, Peter Boyle all in the cast) have been revealed, we can sit back and ponder the CGI-potential of the 10,000 Volt Ghost while we get our Shaggy imitation together.

The Ladykillers

Director:
Joel Coen

Stars:
Tom Hanks
Marlon Wayans
Irma P. Hall

Buena Vista Pictures: A remake of the 1955 comedy, where a professor assembles a group of thieves for a casino heist. After they hole up in a sweet old woman's home, they find that she's the biggest threat to their plans. It's one thing to accept the Coen's testing out their mainstream appeal twice in a row (and this will certainly be their biggest hit to date), but it's quite a challenge to see Hanks and Wayans in roles made famous by the liked of Guiness and Sellers.

You left out Miracle which comes out in Febuary. It stars Kurt Russell and deals with
Kurt Russell stars as coach Herb Brooks in the story of how the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team toppled the seemingly invincible Soviet Union squad to capture the gold medal. A former U.S. player himself, Brooks was the last skater to be cut from the 1960 U.S. Olympic team, the most recent one to win the gold medal before Brooks became the team coach. He cobbled together a group of players and taught them to excel at the European game. Even so, the Russian team had won four consecutive gold medals and was so good that it defeated a team of National Hockey League all-stars. The U.S. team wasn't expected to even make the medal rounds. But led by Brooks, the team defeated the Soviet Union in the semifinal round, then bested Finland in the finals to win the gold.

Other films I am looking foward to
TROY May 12 starring Brad Pitt, Peter O'Toole, Orlando Bloom, Sean Bean and Eric Bana
Throughout time, men have waged war. Some for power, some for glory, some for honor — and some for love. In ancient Greece, the passion of two of history's most legendary lovers, Paris, Prince of Troy (Bloom) and Helen (Kruger), Queen of Sparta, ignites a war that will devastate a civilization. When Paris steals Helen away from her husband, King Menelaus (Gleeson), it is an insult that cannot be suffered. Familial pride dictates that an affront to Menelaus is an affront to his brother Agamemnon (Cox), powerful King of the Myceneans, who soon unites all the massive tribes of Greece to steal Helen back from Troy in defense of his brother's honor. In truth, Agamemnon's pursuit of honor is corrupted by his overwhelming greed — he needs control of Troy to ensure the supremacy of his already vast empire. The walled city, under the leadership of King Prium (O'Toole) and defended by mighty Prince Hector (Bana), is a citadel that no army has been able to breach. One man alone stands as the key to victory or defeat over Troy — Achilles (Pitt), believed to be the greatest warrior alive. Arrogant, rebellious and seemingly invincible, Achilles has no allegiance to anyone or anything, save his own glory. It is his insatiable hunger for eternal renown that leads him to attack the gates of Troy under Agamemnon's banner — but it will be love that ultimately decides his fate. Two worlds will go to war for honor and power. Thousands will fall in pursuit of glory. And for love, a nation will burn to the ground.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban June 4 staring Daniel Radcliff, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson, Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon
Harrys life is in mortal danger yet again, this time more than ever. Firstly a killer named Sirus Black has escaped from azkaban prison and it seems that he broke out just to finish what his master wanted to do 13 years ago; to kill Harry Potter!. Also, for Harrys' protection, Azkaban has sent hundreds of Dementors to guard Hogwarts in an attempt to catch Black. But will they turn out to be a great help or a big mistake?...

Spider Man 2 July 4
Two years have passed, and the mild-mannered Peter Parker faces new challenges as he struggles with "the gift and the curse," desperately trying to balance his dual identities as the web-slinging superhero Spider-Man and his life as a college student. Tormented by his secrets, Peter finds that his relationships with all those he holds dear are in danger of unraveling. His life-long yearning for M.J. (Dunst) becomes even stronger as he fights the impulse to reveal his secret life and declare his love. His friendship with Harry Osborn (Franco) is complicated by the young Osborn's bitterness over his father's death and his growing vendetta against Spider-Man. Even Peter's beloved Aunt May (Harris), who has fallen on hard times after the death of Uncle Ben, begins to have doubts about her nephew. Peter's life is about to become even more complicated as he encounters a formidable new foe -- Dr. Otto Octavius (Molina). Peter must use all the powers at his disposal to try to stop this diabolical madman in his octagonal tracks

Here is more films rounding the months of April to August. Likewise not every movie due out for release is listed below. But plenty is offered for fans of sci-fi stories and comic book fandoms. I'll admit I am drooling over some of these titles -- only hope they fulfill my expectations and not disappoint. Only question, where is the heavy stuff? There were few dramas listed on IMDB that I passed over but I am talking the Oscar heavies! Fall releases I suppose and most notably not every film has set a release date yet.

APRIL 2nd

Hellboy

Director:
Guillermo del Toro

Stars:
Ron Perlman
Doug Jones
Selma Blair

Columbia Pictures: In the final days of WWII, Nazis resort to black magic and attempt to raise a demon to aid their dying cause. During the ceremony their camp is raided by the Allies, but not before a demon (Hellboy, aka Ron Perlman) is conjured. Hellboy grows to adulthood with the Allied forces, and as an agent of the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense he, along with aquatic-humanoid Abe Sapien (Jones) and pyrokinetic Liz Sherman (Blair), investigates mysterious and mystical sightings. Based on the Dark Horse comic by Mike Mignola.Early indicators point to a fantastic-looking film, with more bizarrely supernatural characters than you can shake a stick at. Our spies tell us that the work on Abe Sapien is especially cool; but with all these strange characters (scar tissue-covered leather-clad Nazi, anyone?) is there any room for a plot? We're not so sure about that, but we are sure it'll be a hit with fans of the "Big Man With a Gun" genre.

APRIL 16th

The Punisher

Director:
Jonathan Hensleigh

Stars:
Thomas Jane
John Travolta
Samantha Mathis
Laura Harring

Artisan Entertainment: After his wife and children are killed, G-Man Frank Castle (Jane) takes it upon himself to rid America of crime by acting as judge, jury and executioner. Based on the badboy Marvel Comics hero.Scheduled two weeks after Hellboy, with a similar feel to Walking Tall... something's gotta give here. Look for one of the comic characters to be pushed to this summer. Meanwhile, remember how audiences cheered when this teaser was shown during The Hulk? You can be sure that Artisan and big-wig producer Kevin Feige (check his resume) are keeping a short leash on director Hensleigh's (another impressive resume) debut.

MAY 7th

Van Helsing

Director:
Stephen Sommers

Stars:
Hugh Jackman
Kate Beckinsale
Richard Roxburgh
Shuler Hensley
Will Kemp

Universal Pictures: During the late 19th century, famed monster hunter Dr. Abraham Van Helsing (Jackman) heads to Eastern Europe to battle with Count Dracula (Roxburgh), the Wolf Man (Kemp), and Frankenstein's Monster (Hensley). By his side is the ravishing Anna (Beckinsale), a member of a family committed to ridding the world of evil. The Jackman/Beckinsale pairing is likely to bring more people than Beckinsale/Speedman's Underworld - which opened at #1 back in September. Maybe that film's initial success will allow Universal execs to quit gnawing their nails since big daddy Vivendi's financial woes have put tons of pressure on big budget projects like this one. Immediately after Underworld's opening, NBC announced plans to develop a TV show out of Helsing, though the deal is in development at this time. So there are plenty of eyes on this film, especially since The Amazing Spider-Man's filming delays created room for these monsters to mop up at the box office heading into the Memorial Day weekend.

JULY 9th

King Arthur

Director:
Antoine Fuqua

Stars:
Clive Owen
Stephen Dillane
Keira Knightley

Buena Vista Pictures: A demystified take on the tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.Although Arthur, the first collaboration between director Fuqua and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, is being promoted as a historical epic, the romance between King Clive and Queen Keira is what audiences should shine up to.

JULY 16th

I, Robot

Director:
Alex Proyas

Stars:
Will Smith
Bridget Moynahan
Bruce Greenwood

20th Century Fox Film Corporation: A technophobic police officer (Smith) investigates a murder in which a robot is implicated - an impossibility according to the Laws of Robotics. But if robots can break these laws, there's nothing to stop them from taking over the world... or does humankind's complete dependency on robots mean they already have?Though it shares a name with an Asimov anthology, this film is not actually a direct adaptation of any of the nine stories it contains. Instead it's been adapted from a Jeff Vintar script (called Hardwired) to fit into and borrow elements from Asimov's stories. Still, fans of his work should be happy; this is no Bicentennial Man.

AUGUST 6th

Alien Vs. Predator

Director:
Paul W.S. Anderson

Stars:
Lance Henriksen
Raoul Bova
Ewen Bremner
Sanaa Lathan

20th Century Fox Film Corporation: Heavily armed scientists, exploring pyramid ruins buried deep under Antarctic ice, quickly follow a trail of disturbing evidence to a shocking reality: five teenage predators in the middle of a millenary ritual -- hunting aliens in order to reach manhood.Watching the making-of featurette on AvP's official site sheds nice light on director Anderson, who comes off as a devout fan of both monster legacies and has put together a sound premise -- and a solid cast. The teaser trailer's great, the outfits are fab, and the guns are all loaded. We (sorta) can't wait.

The Village

Director:
M. Night Shyamalan

Stars:
Sigourney Weaver
William Hurt
Joaquin Phoenix
Bryce Howard
Adrien Brody
Judy Greer

Buena Vista Pictures: At the turn of the 19th Century, in a Covington, Pennsylvania -- a village surrounded by woods that are home to a race of mythical creatures -- a young man butts heads with the town leader over the law that prohibits citizens from leaving town limits for any reason. This time around, Shyamalan, with his gifts for convoluted, supernatural plots and fine casting, uses the promise of love between young beauties (there will be no better-looking couple than Phoenix and Greer on-screen this year) to camouflage his formulaic approach to making (admittedly good) movies.

AUGUST 13th

Blade: Trinity

Director:
David S. Goyer

Stars:
Wesley Snipes
Kris Kristofferson
Parker Posey
Ryan Reynolds
Jessica Biel
Dominic Purcell

New Line Cinema: Framed by the Vampire Nation for a series of brutal murders, the Daywalker finds allies in a group of vampire hunters, the Nightstalkers, and together they wage a battle that leads all the way to Dracula himself. Dominic Purcell ... Dracula?!

AUGUST 20th

A Sound of Thunder

Director:
Peter Hyams

Stars:
Edward Burns
Ben Kingsley
Catherine McCormack

Warner Bros: A big game hunter goes on a time-traveling safari (run by Kingsley) to bag the ultimate kill - dinosaurs. By stepping on a butterfly, he unwittingly sets off a chain reaction that will erase the existence of mankind - and it's up to a team of experts (headed by McCormack and Burns) to undo it.This production has seen its fair share of change. Pierce Brosnan and director Renny Harlan were initially attached, and in 2002 severe flooding caused considerable damage to the Prague set; perhaps a crew member stepped on an ant. Based on a Ray Bradbury short story.

AUGUST 27th

Man-Thing

Director:
Brett Leonard

Stars:
Jack Thompson
Matthew Le Nevez
Steve Bastoni

Artisan Entertainment: Deep in the Florida Everglades lives Man-Thing, a mucky, mindless creature made mostly of plant material who "burns those who know fear." About to cross his path is F.A. Schist, a real estate magnate with plans to turn part of the nature preserve into an airport. Based on the Marvel comic.Artisan's second Marvel adaptation this year is getting rave advance word for hiring both effects-guru Leonard as director and The Make-Up Effects Group (Matrix fans take note) for special effects and prosthetics.

I forgot about the Village that is #3 for me for next year. Right now I am looking most foward to
Harry Potter
Troy
The Village
Spiderman 2

Van Helsing I am not sure about mostly because they haven't released a trailer yet (which surprises me every other big film has to date) King Arthur I have a feeling will bomb, it is R rated which will kill it and it has almost no star power. Aliens vs Predator looks like 2004 version of Freddy vs Jason which is not a bad thing.

Other big movies coming out that I know of
Shrek 2
The Day After Tomorrow (some futuristic movie by the makers of ID4)
The World of Tomorrow (another future movie staring Jude Law)
The Chronicles of Riddick (Sequel to Pitch Black)
Garfield (awful looking film that is all I have to say about that)
