I've had this spare 5 gig drive lying around for about a month and finally decided to make some use out of it in putting it in my HP.

Though before I do anything: in order for my operating system to run will it have to be installed on my "master" drive, or can I install it on the "slave" drive?

If you're connecting both via one IDE cable (which I assume you are), you're boot drive should be the master, and you're second drive should be the slave. The master drive is addressed first, so it is designated "Drive 0", or C:. So, make that one your bootable drive.
