Right now I'm attempting to set up Red Hat 9 as a server/net gateway.

I need to run Apache/PHP4.x, MySQL, DHCP, FTP, and some firewalling. The net connection is Bellsouth DSL to PPPoE.

Apache is working, but the MySQL version is old old old. I have no idea how to set up DHCP or FTP services. I think I can figure out the PPPoE. SQL freaks out whenever I try to upgrade it, because there are a billion dependencies.

I have no idea how to build/compile my own stuff.

If you don't have access to my webspace already and you help, you get some - 1 gig of space, with minor restrictions on content.

What Version of MySQL are you using?

I got those two links through Google, so you might want to try that.

Also, I'll scoure Red Hat's website and crack open my Linux book later this evening.

Mean while try to see if the man files have anything on FTP or DHCP.

the command is like this

MAN FTP or MAN DHCP

you can also try

apropos FTP to get a specilized command or something.

Been a few months since I fired up the Linux box, but lets see....

Firewalling - IPCHAINS

DHCP if you install as a server is switched on by default. Actually, from memory, almost all of that is switched on by default if you install server. As far as I recall anyway.

What type of install did you do, first?

If you didnt install the packages straight up, then a qucik look through availible packages in RPM Manager (Dont ask me where that is, it changes between installs and X managers) should be your first call. Your loooking for specifically server packages. I'm pretty sure RPM Manager is now a GUI, so you wont have to do RPM cmd line. The RPM install sets up everyting resonably well. Then, grep for MAN pages, find the .conf files.

Sorry i cant be more specific, hven't dealt with Linux for a few montrhs and the knowledge is going cold :/

Oi Vey!! Yes the RPM has a GUI, I guess I need to reinstall mine and go from there. I'll do all that tomarrow, and crack a book while I'm at it.
