Okay I know it isn't due till Friday but with Christmas I want to give you guys the chance. It is a four day weekend starting with Christmas Day. All points are doubled. We got at least four wide openers
PayCheck (a sci-fi flick staring Mr Lopez :p)
Peter Pan
Cheaper by the Dozen (staring box office reliable Steve Martin)
Cold Mountain (oscar contender)
not sure on the theater counts, I suspect Cold Mountain to have under 2000 figuring they did that with Chicago last year.

He has an ego? No man with an ego would rip it out of himself in a movie :)

2 Cheaper by the Dozen $19.99
3 Peter Pan $14.99
4 Paycheck $13.99
5 Cold Mountain $12.99

It looks we got just about the same top 5. I was going to make Peter Pan a surprise like 2nd or third, but it looks like it will be a disapointment. The movie looks great to me and it has been getting great reviews, I think though that people aren't going to rush out to another Peter Pan flick.

I used Lee's for guidance, as BOM hadn't bothered to do one at 3AM last night

Yeah and the ones for BOM are in complete only the new releases are 4 day. Marcus is going to have some problems I am afraid especially with New Years being a 4 day one too.

Dec 27th, 2003, 09:59:27 PM
its been a very busy weekend at least here in my town, I have never seen the theatre so crowded for every single movie they were showing

There was a line for everything, and ROTK again was sold out all day

Saw Cold Mountain and Cheaper by the Dozen and they were both packed

and if that estimate is true that is nothing short of amazing as it did 21.81 million last friday and a 1 million drop over a week has to be a record thats about -5%

Jedi Master Carr
Dec 27th, 2003, 11:15:12 PM
Its no record as I remember Titantic went up several times and may even went up in its second week I believe.

Syo
Dec 28th, 2003, 12:53:32 AM
yea but this is for a movie that opened in 3700 theatres in a very wide release

if i remember correctly titanic added screens its second week and was somewhat limited its first week

for a major release to match a 20 million dollar day in its second week has to be a record

Jedi Master Carr
Dec 28th, 2003, 01:57:37 AM
I really don't remember I think Titanic had a wide release I am sure it opened in over 2000 theaters at least. Titantic had the best run of any film since the early 80's (when movies could run longer than today) and it went up several times during its run even if it didn't do it in its second week I know it did it later on like valentines day it went up like 50%.
Here is the answer

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=titanic.htm

Titanic opened in 2700 theaters it got a small increase of theaters in the second week. and it increased by 8 million which is really incredible. It went up 25% one weekend in early January and on Valentines day it went up 43%. It went up 73% in May (have no clue why it went up that much).

OK Titanics numbers are impressive (esspecially since the increases were happening when it was still making 30 million a weekend) but i am still happy for ROTK and while i know it has no chance of dethroning Titanic i can hope

Here are the weekend estimates (3 day). Not seen any 4 day estimates yet, but it should be easy to figure out. Just add thursday number to the 3 days. I am really impressed by Cheaper By the Dozen. For a movie that looks like crap, it sure makes one heck of a lot of money. It is all because of Steve Martin I think. Cold Mountain looks to take 3rd spot with about 20M for the 4 days. Paycheck will take #4 I think, and Something's gotta give #5. Petter Pan is officially Da Bomb. You know, originally I was thinking to predict it really high, but then I read the reports of dust collecting theater seats for thursday. Its a bit of a shame, a good movie based on a classic book loses out like that. I blame it on marketing and the kids today don't like stuff like that anymore. They prefer to see Junk like Scream 3, Nickelodeon crap, Scooby Doo.. and yes this silly movie with Steve Martin. I will never truely understand them :)

Return of The King had drop for saturday, and the Studio estimates a 'low' number for sunday. Still very impressive performance. I look forward to see the actuals, because I am not sure how accurate the estimates are. Either way, it will have gross in the 65M+ dollar range for the 4 days, and should do very strong into the new year.

Weekend estimates - 3 day

1 Return of the King $51,220,000 -29% $223,690,000
2 Cheaper by the Dozen $28,225,000 NEW $36,400,000 (PTA: $8,558)
3 Cold Mountain $14,500,000 NEW $19,000,000 (PTA: $6,703)
4 Something's Gotta Give $14,200,000 +24% $56,400,000
5 Paycheck $13,900,000 NEW $19,200,000 (PTA: $5,032)
6 Mona Lisa Smile $11,500,000 -0.2% $31,500,000
7 Peter Pan $11,420,000 NEW $15,091,000 (PTA: $4,059)
8 The Last Samurai $8,370,000 +7% $74,370,000
9 Bad Santa $4,523,000 -11% $50,944,000
10 Elf $4,200,000 -23% $164,863,000

Peter Pan is a dispointment to me. I don't blame marketing I saw adds for it everywhere and it really showed off the hightlights. It is just that kids don't like that and I think it is really that people don't want to see another Peter Pan Movie I think that did it in. At least I will get 2 and 3 right. I saw Cheaper by the Dozen being big Steve Martin has been hot right now. And Cold Mountain I thought would open close to 20. I think it is going to have a really good box office run. It seems like a movie women will just swoon over and I bet it will make over 100 could even threaten 200 if it gets a lot of Oscar nods.
