Hey! Seabiscuit got a Best Picture nom! :D
Though it's disappointing not to see Sean Astin get a best supporting actor nomination. :\

I told ya not to give up on that horse. ;) He always proves people wrong. This is how I see the race shaping up...

Seven films competing for five spots:

1. Return of the King (Lock)
2. Cold Mountain (Lock)
3. Mystic River (Near-Lock)

And two of:
Seabiscuit, Master and Commander. Big Fish, and Lost in Translation.

LiT is probably in, but it still seems more of a Director/No Pic nom kinda movie. BF scored a Comedy nom and neither got a director nom...so I think they're pretty much ever. As far as M&C goes - it'd be hard for 3 epics to get in the final five. Weir probably gets a nom though.

I can't believe City of God wasn't nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

Man Cold Mountain got a lot of nominations. I was hoping Portman would get one but her part in that movie might be deemed too short (I hear it is 10-15 min at the most). I am not too surprised with everything else except Depp getting a Best comedic actor in POTC although I think he deserves it.

I know you want Astin to be supporting actor, but have you seen the other six? Remember, if the only movie you saw this year was TOmb Raider 2, ANgelina Jolie would be best actress ;)

I missed this comment the first time thru. It *was* nominated last year.

Diane Lane, Under the Tuscan Sun
Helen Mirren, Calendar Girls

Sorry...I copied and pasted from an Oscar watch website. I didn't want to take the time to type them all out..and it appears she had yet to finish when I did so. :\

Yup, clearly.

Doesn't make me any less eager to see it, though. :)

As well it shouldn't Dutchy. I think the film was just too polarizing to be nominated. That's what I've gotten from people's reactions to it at least - I have yet to see it.

Astin could still get nominated by the Oscars but he won't win, I think Finney will win this time, finally. He has never won and I think the academy will want to give him one. Plus he was suppose to be outstanding in this movie.

Finney? I don't see him on the list... :uhoh

edit: n/m, supporting actor, I see him now. :)

CMJ, what does polarizing mean here?

ReaperFett
Dec 19th, 2003, 03:20:09 PM
Know how the North and South pole are at opposite sides of the globe? Like that. A large number like, a large number dislike or whatever.

JMK
Dec 19th, 2003, 03:55:13 PM
Kinda like what Reaper said.
I think what CMJ meant was that its the type of movie people absolutely love, or absolutely can't stand.

Prediction time.....

Best Motion Picture – Drama
Cold Mountain
**The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Mystic River
Seabiscuit

Even considering the fact that the HFPA hasn't warmed up to these films very much, I believe ROTK will rule the night.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama
Cate Blanchett - Veronica Guerin
Nicole Kidman - Cold Mountain
Scarlett Johansson - Girl with a Pearl Earring
**Charlize Theron - Monster
Uma Thurman - Kill Bill – Vol. 1
Evan Rachel Wood - Thirteen

Charlize Theron should take this one in a walk. One of the truly magnificent performances I've ever seen.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama
Russell Crowe - Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Tom Cruise - The Last Samurai
Ben Kingsley - House of Sand and Fog
Jude Law - Cold Mountain
**Sean Penn - Mystic River

This is one of the tougher categories. I'm gonna go with Sean Penn to win, but I could honestly see any of the five winning for various reasons.

Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Bend It Like Beckham
Big Fish
Finding Nemo
Lost in Translation
**Love Actually

My no guts, no glory pick. From what I've heard the HFPA was crazy about this movie. I could see it as the upset of the evening.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Jamie Lee Curtis - Freaky Friday
Scarlett Johansson - Lost In Translation
**Diane Keaton - Something’s Gotta Give
Diane Lane - Under the Tuscan Sun
Helen Mirren - Calendar Girls

Keaton should benefit from the career comeback vote.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy
Jack Black - School of Rock
Johnny Depp - Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
**Bill Murray - Lost in Translation
Jack Nicholson - Something’s Gotta Give
Billy Bob Thornton - Bad Santa

This one appears to be between Murray and Depp. I say they vote for Bill Murray, but don't be surprised if Johnny takes it.

Best Foreign Language Film
**The Barbarian Invasions (Canada)
Good Bye, Lenin (Germany)
Monsieur Ibrahim (France)
Osama (Afghanistan)
The Return (Russia)

Barbarian Invasions has the most buzz around town...hence my pick. Honestly though, I haven't seen any of these, so I have no personal feelings to base this on.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Maria Bello - The Cooler
Patricia Clarkson - Pieces of April
Hope Davis - American Splendor
Holly Hunter - Thirteen
**Renee Zellweger - Cold Mountain

They're gonna want to give CM something substantial.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
Alec Baldwin - The Cooler
Albert Finney - Big Fish
**William H. Macy - Seabiscuit
Tim Robbins - Mystic River
Peter Sarsgaard - Shattered Glass
Ken Watanabe - The Last Samurai

The biggest toss-up of the evening for me. I would not be floored to hear any of these names. I'm going out on a limb here and picking Macy, because I heard the HFPA went crazy for his bit part...and once again...this one is like pulling straws. Your guess is as good as mine.

Best Director - Motion Picture
Sofia Coppola - Lost in Translation
Clint Eastwood - Mystic River
**Peter Jackson - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Anthony Minghella - Cold Mountain
Peter Weir - Master And Commander: The Far Side of the World

The HFPA didn't award Eastwood for 'Unforgiven' so he may be fairly close, but I think Jackson should win fairly comfortably.

Best Screenplay - Motion Picture
Sofia Coppola - Lost in Translation
Richard Curtis - Love Actually
Brian Helgeland - Mystic River
**Anthony Minghella - Cold Mountain
Jim Sheridan & Naomi Sheridan & Kirsten Sheridan - In America

Much like with Kidman I'm picking Minghella here because it's obvious the HFPA loved the film(with 8 noms and all). I think they'll throw it some major awards, just not the biggies.

Best Original Score - Motion Picture
Alexandre Desplat - Girl with a Pearl Earring
Danny Elfman - Big Fish
**Howard Shore - The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Gabriel Yared - Cold Mountain
Hans Zimmer - The Last Samurai

Chalk another one up to the ROTK onslaught.

Best Original Song - Motion Picture
“The Heart Of Every Girl” – Mona Lisa Smile Music By: Elton John Lyrics By: Bernie Taupin
“Into The West”—
The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King Music & Lyrics By: Howard Shore, Fran Walsh, Annie Lennox
“Man Of The Hour”—Big Fish Music & Lyrics By: Eddie Vedder
“Time Enough For Tears”—In America Music & Lyrics By: Bono, Gavin Friday And Maurice Seezer
**“You Will Be My Ain True Love”—Cold Mountain Music & Lyrics By: Sting

The HFPA has awarded Sting in the past. I think they love him enough to reward him again.

I'd like to think ROTK will take the big ones...but.... I dunno. I have no confidence in the HFPA.

Looks like a shut out on Cold Mountain, except for Supporting actresss. HOORAY!

Bring out the Brooms! LOTR sweep is a coming! Congrats Peter!

Congrats to Jackson and ROTK. Won all four Globes for which it was nominated... Original Song, Original Score, Director and Dramatic Picture.

Let's see if it repeats at the Academy Awards in a few weeks.

Congrats to Bill Murray, too. After all these years, to finally see him win something is great. I really hope he gets the Best Actor Oscar.
