Depp's nomination was a bit of a surprise. I'd be dumbfounded if he won however.

I would also be surprised if he won...still it's nice his performance got a nod at least. :)

I wouldn't mind seeing Mystic River streak six of the top seven catagories. The film was that impressive.

I have many movies to see before I can make an informed judgement - but I was really high on MR too.

When the Globe noms come out on Thursday that should narrow down the field even further. I'm pretty curious as to what's gonna be left off.

All the guilds will start to roll out their noms here as well. The first that I found are the Makeup/Hair guild. Here's the snippet off of Hollywood Reporter....

'Pirates' tops list for hair, makeup

A pirate, a samurai and the heroic little people from the shire lead the nominations for the fifth annual Hollywood Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Guild Awards. Walt Disney Studios' "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" plundered four noms, while New Line Cinema's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" captured three. Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Last Samurai" and Universal Pictures' "Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat" are neck and neck with two noms apiece. The guild gave best contemporary makeup recognition to Miramax Films' "The Human Stain," 20th Century Fox's "Daredevil" and Columbia Pictures' "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle." Universal's "Seabiscuit" will race against "Samurai" and "Pirates" in the best period makeup heat. (Sheigh Crabtree)

Makeup/Hair guild? One start to wonder if there exist any nomination category that does not have a guild. I'll nominate Vin Diesel for minimalistic hair style :)

Yay, Daredevil could win an award for makeup :)

Why shouldn't they have a group? I mean they do give an Oscar for Make-up afterall. :p Basically every group has a guild or union out here. I'm sure the only reason the grips don't have a yearly award is because that would be impossible to judge. ;)

If you go by strength though...the Grip and Electrian unions are the strongest. You might as well be a teamster.

I don't see how you can judge makeup. I mean really, what did Daredevil have, let's be honest. The blind effect was very good, ditto Bullseye scar. But is that enough to win an award?

Meh, I wont complain. Has two awards so far, would be nice to see a hat trick :D

Will he show up? I remember when he got nominated last time he didn't even come. Also what was the movie that won best picture at the La Critic awards? I have never heard of it.

Sean Penn was there last night because he presented Clint Eastwood with a Lifetime Achievement Award. When Penn won he looked shocked and flabberghasted when the audience gave him a standing ovation.

He appreciated it more than he would admit.
