AHhhh Shit my brain hurts... I just got out of a 5.5 hour Final Exam about the details of Computer Opperating System Theory. AHHGGGG!! The worst part is this is only Round One of Five. tomorow I have a test on the Programing language C. the Next day is C++, the next day is MS Access/Visual Basic, and the last day of the week I have Program Desgin Theory... Each of these test are 5.5 hours long.... I'm fucking wasted after only the first one, and I still have to study for the Next one! AHHHHHHGGGG!!!

And my brain is full....

And I bet you'll never need 3/4 of it again.

I'm guessing that I will not need much of it in my future but it's part of the program I'm taking and I want the peice of paper saying that I'm good with computers.

I dont know, C/C++ can be pretty darn useful. I have never bothered get into it because of lack of time, but I sure would not mind.

Here's a question tho - does a piece of paper really mean your good with computers, or you just know how to pass exams?

While that may seem like a glib dismissal of college, I've been in the IT industry for nearly 15 years now and the best people were always self taught. While I do understand that to get in you need the paper, do a lot of self teaching as well, a lot of reading too. Never stop reading. My own technical libary is about 25 odd books and several thousand pages printed, with about (let me check), 250 URLs and 1Gb in documents on the PC. You do need to do that, because (NOTE : this is an observation about Aust Unis, the USA could be different) Uni's here teach the wrong things and a lot of useless junk. TAFE (I guess that'll be USA type community colleges) usually are much better and less taxing. I've done some TAFE teaching, students are usually quite good.

which reminds me, I need to pick up an update to Technet.

I'm only just starting on my Tech Library. I only have 5-10 big books, most of which are out dated, and 25 URLs. I've3 been teaching myself a lot in HTML, PERL, JAVA, and Web Desgin. I'm wanting to get into Web Development or Server Admin, and from what I can see so far C/C++ doesn't have much to do with them... but Again I could be wrong.

Well, C++ can be handy for scripting stuff in Linux. If you're running a web server, it can be useful. Also, no one takes an IIS based webserver seriously, so if you want to do your own web dev, load up apache, PHP and MySQL.

Quoted for truth except for one thing - I WISH people did not take that vile curse IIS seriously. It would make a Sys Admin job easier. I'm afraid you may need to know .asp

If you want to get into Server admin, you better know security, proper setup, networks and how to beat up users with a cluebat. Most of that stuff is best learned on the job, not from a textbook.

Especially the cluebat thing. Learn to make users fear and respect you.
