We did this last season, and although we only had seven participants, it turned out to be rather fun. So, let's give it a try for the 2003 bowl season, and get more people involved. :)

Now that the college bowl schedule is set, it's time to test your knowledge of the game (or likely just your ability to be lucky). There are 28 bowl game, taking place between December 16th and January 4th. A list of the games will be made, and each contestant will be given the opportunity to pick the winners. Simply copy the list of games, and place the letter W, in parenthesis, next to the winning school for each game.

Example:

Sugar Bowl
Oklahoma (W) vs. LSU

Repeat this process for each of the 28 games. As a tie-breaker, each contestant will also be asked to pick the final score of the BCS National Title game. Please do this separately from the win/loss picks.

Example:

Sugar Bowl
Oklahoma (W) vs. LSU

Title Game Final Score
Oklahoma - 27
LSU - 24

The first bowl game of the season, the New Orleans Bowl, kicks off at 7PM ET on December 16th. All picks must be in by this time. Please remember, do not edit your picks post once the first game has kicked off. If you wish to make a change to one of your picks once the Bowl season has begun, please make a new post containing your changed pick. Any questions about the rules or the contest can be directed to me. If you wish to do research on the the competing teams and the games, sites like ESPN.com and CNNSI.com have large Bowl Game coverage sections already up and running.

Good luck to all those who participate. It should be a very intriguing bowl season, particularly with the controversy surrounding just who deserves to be playing for the National Title. :)

Remember guys, you'll need to pick the final score of the Sugar Bowl for tie-breaker purposes. You can do it much closer to the actual game, of course, but you'll have to do so in a seperate post.

Nice triple overtime shootout between Houston and Hawaii, with the Rainbow Warriors pulling off the victory. Fun to watch.

The brawl at the end was unfortunate, but it was still a good game.

Ugh, that game was stressful. I was hoping for a solid Hawai'i victory. Instead, I get overtime. I am sick of overtime games this year.

Anyways, glad the Warriors could pull it out. I'm 5-1 now :D

The officiating in the Alamo Bowl was pretty terrible. Richie Incognito got away with hands to the facemask on every play, and had about two personal foul worthy incidents that were ignored. Bo Pelini is a decent coach, but he has no control over that team, and it showed in that game. They played like a bunch of thugs.

Excellent overall defensive play by Washington State. Texas made it closer at the end, but the Cougars were able to shut down the Longhorns for most of the night.

Fresno State seems to be having their way with UCLA at the moment.

It was around this time last year I made my push to get back in contention. Things are starting to break in my direction this year too.

At least as of when I posted this. ;)

It's anyone's competition at this point. 5 people are tied with 8 wins, with 2 more at 7.

Wonderful Sun Bowl game... lots of offense. Minnesota's ground attack put up 245 yards on the #10 rush defense in the nation, and Oregon had it's passing game working for most of the day. Nice win for the Gophers with the late field goal.

I'm more of a defensive guy. I loved the Liberty Bowl in particualar with Utah bringing the wood. I also liked the way Auburn's D stepped up and Arkansas shutting down Brad Smith was DAMN impressive.

Looks like USC has solidified a share of the national title. No AP #1 who has gone on to win their bowl game has ever been dropped from that ranking in the final poll. It's just a question now of with whom they will share the title, Oklahoma or LSU.

In another huge story, ESPN and ABC are reporting that Kansas State QB Ell Roberson was pulled from practice today and questioned by police in regarding a sexual assault complaint filed against him. His status for the Fiesta Bowl tomorrow night is unknown.

Wow, we all lost a lot the past 2 days. Crazy.

I was at the Music City Bowl with Auburn and Wisconsin. I didn't think it was a great game. But I had fun watching John Vaughn kicking field goals, even if they were just extra points. He played for my highschool team last year, he kicked a 63 yarder once. Kody Bliss is also the starting punter, he played for my team too.

I thought the Orange Bowl was great. I love games with huge runs and passes and a little agression. I remember a few small fights breaking out over some fumbles. Hehe, great fun =)

Most of the games today were pretty entertaining. I was disappointed with the result of the Capital One Bowl (for obvious reasons), but everything was very watchable (although FSU/Miami was kinda old hat... same old same old between those two, FSU can't hit a field goal in the clutch.)

Didn't get to watch any today besides FSU/Miami and didn't even get to watch all of that. So I was happy to see even that

The best game of the day was definitely the Citrus...err...Capital One Bowl. Sorry to see Purdue lose, but man what a comeback!

I'm really looking forward to the Cotton Bowl today. As someone who remembers when it was one of the 4 Major games, I yearn for a day when it gets it's stature back.

The Buckeyes decided to put a whoopin' on Kansas State tonight. The way they have played tonight, they look like, far and away, the best team in the Big Ten, not Michigan.

You also have to think this strengthens USC's arguement for the shared national title. The team that hammered the mighty Sooners gets all but dominated by a Buckeye team that lost to Michigan?

Very true, I was glad to see the Buckeyes come out and play like they did, Krenzel seemed to be on point for most of the game - he read the defense very well IMO.

My Tulsa pick looks pretty horrid about now. o_O

I'm contemplating changing my Sugar Bowl selection. I had a vibe midday yesterday that Ohio State would win - and they did. Now I'm getting a similar feeling about LSU.

I'll stay with the Sooners for now.

Figrin D'an
Jan 3rd, 2004, 04:31:56 PM
I have to admit, I've had the same vibe about LSU. Based upon what I have read, it seems to me that the Sooners are still a little distracted by their loss a month ago, and the talk that they don't belong in the BCS title game. If Nick Saban's calm and cool demeanor is shared by his team, I'd be tempted to pick LSU as well.

As for Ohio State... as soon as they lost to Michigan, I decided I was going to pick them for their bowl game, wherever they would end up. They had something to prove yet, and Jim Tressel coaching in big games is turning out to be a money pick.

CMJ
Jan 3rd, 2004, 04:41:37 PM
I think Tressel is the best coach in the game...Saban and Stoops be damned(or whoever else you wanna throw in there).

Charley

Couple that with a very conveniently weak Alabama in the west. Yeah, Saban's a master :rolleyes

Then he's definetly fooling a lot of folks because his name is constantly being mentioned for the several vacant head coaching jobs in the NFL.

CMJ

Alabama might me down for awhile. The probabtion will hurt for another few years. Even if you take that stance though - Alabama hasn't exactly dominated the West.

Five of the six schools have won the West in the 12 year history of the East/West Divisions. I know Bama has won more than the other schools(four right, maybe five...can't remember) but only 2 of those were overall CONFERENCE titles. LSU has 2 Division AND Conference titles.

It seems the blanace of power is shifting East to West...and LSU is now the power player.

Sanis Prent
Jan 4th, 2004, 05:35:15 PM
Alabama has always been a check on LSU's ambitions. The record between the two schools is suprisingly one-sided.

I dunno. I think Saban is reaping the benefits of recruiting that he didn't do. Give him a few years, and see what he's really worth.

CMJ
Jan 4th, 2004, 07:39:14 PM
Saban is in his fourth year. That means most of the players there are his now...except for the 5th year seniors. His starters seem made up of mostly youngsters....his kids.

You're right about Alabama dominating the series though. It's like 43-17-5. I knew the Tide led...but that was shocking to see.

Jason White benefited greatly from the talent around him. Much like Gino Toretta. Not to say that he shouldn't have won the Heisman, but I see Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger as better QB's.

Next year will be interesting... USC, LSU and Oklahoma all will be reloading for another championship shot. Georgia will probably be in the mix, too.
