Wow. That is some cool stuff there. I always wanted to do some kind of Martial art when I was a kid. I thought it was the coolest. Now...I STILL WANT TO DO IT!

The Discovery Channel special was kind of a let down though.

It was more based on special effects than the actual mechanics of martial arts.

Martial Arts is not about mechanics. Martial Arts is about energy flows. It's about directing energy in a direction that you want it to go, to use and control flows. At it's purest, Martial Arts is a dance. Watching those videos, it was a wonderful demonstration of those flows and how each part of the body is used to produce the flow you want.

These days, not beign quite as fast or as light on my feet as I was, Tai Chi is my favorite Martial Art. Tai Chi really teaches and explains how to focus and use energy flows well

I prefer Shorei-Ryu style the best. :) The moves aren't as fast as some I've tried, but they pack quite a bit of power, and you don't have to be nearly as flexible. :) Fits me pretty well.

And the show was pretty cool. :) I liked the weapons the most. lol

I think he was using the term "mechanics" loosely Marcus about how the martial arts worked. how certain things are done etc Why they are done, stuff like that

Well, maybe. But it realyl helps not to think of martial arts in a physical sense, but more in the context of application and routing of energy. I never actually saw it in terms of what I'm doing physically, but where the various forms of energy are going and how I can change that flow - not even necessarily in myself, but around elsewhere.

Also, Martial Arts in their purest have a great deal of spirital signifigance too. Your also directing your spirital energy, according to some particitoners. Your going beyond the mere physical. It's quite facinating to read and study what the masters believe their power comes from - never it's the body. It's always the mind / spirit where their foundations come from. which is also one reason I do apprach with caution, becuase there really is something in that. I was always taught that you learn more after black belt and it's not about how you punch. It's about how you think and feel.
