View Full Version : Carry On As Men

The training room was illuminated only by the cool gray light (that was more shadow than anything), that always came before dawn. It was a curious sight in the Jedi temple, seeming almost to be rising out of the stone floors themselves and reaching like a multitude of hands to the farthest corners of the rooms. There was the normal pre-day hush about the corridors, interupted now and again by an odd sound.

It was a series of soft gasps, the kind made when someone inhales and ehales sharply--perhaps when exerting themselves. However there was a contanied quality to the noise that signalled whoever it was making them was trying to be quiet.

Inside the room Daen C'allyx was hanging from a chin up bar, drenched in persperation. He was midway up to the bar and shaking with the effort. It almost seemed as if he weren't moving at all, merely hanging, but oh-so-slowly he was moving upwards.

A year ago this had been easy. The young Jedi padawan and his best friend Jeb had often raced each other to see who could get to fifty first. That had been before the mission that had taken his masters life, and his own strength. Though it had been a full year now Daen was only just recovering physically. He had gained weight and--taking it as a hopeful sign--had now decided to rebuild his body.

It was harder than he though.

"...Uh..."

His eyes scrunched shut as he tried to lift himself further. From his appearance Daen looked as if he had been doing multitudes of chin-ups. The truth was that he was trying to finish up his third. The bar was wobbling as he strained red-faced to get to the top. He wasn't going up. But he wasn't going down either. It was a single thought...fear, rather, that wouldn't let him let go.

I can't do it...

"Hey hey, are you doin' okay?" James had just started her morning run around the complex, and had heard the gasps coming from inside the room. She grabbed the guy's legs, supporting him slightly. "Here, get down from there."

Never mind she was only a slight woman of five feet, and he was quite a bit taller and heavier. The padawan had acted without thinking, sensing through the Force the other's fears.

With a gasp Daen shook his head, holding onto the bar more tightly.

"...No! No, leggo!....Uhgn...I have to... halfway there..."

But his arms were shaking too hard, and they burned with the effort of suspending in mid-lift, despite the woman's (he couldn't see her face, but it sounded like a woman) hold on him. A bead of sweat rolled down Daen's face, and with unfortunate precision, dripped into his eye. The Padawan blinked quickly as his eye teared up, and lost his grip. He tumbled to the ground in a heap--he didn't know what happened to the other-- and lay there breathing hard. His skinny frame was still trembly, and he was getting cold now from over-exertion.

"Are you... Hello?"
