Sorry, I meant Cat in the Hat... Is anyone considering seeing this? I'm praying my son doesn't see a commercial for it. It looks simply wretched and I've seen a couple of reviews that tore it a new one. Please boy, stay away from the TV....

We have a CITH promotion where I work (Burger King for the curious), and I had a guy today tell me that the movie sucked :lol

It doesnt look too horrible, but it probably is >_<

Yeah I pray your son doesn't want to see it. Try to promise him you will take him to see the Haunted Mansion next week that at least enjoyable for adults.

It's not really at the top of my list either. Though I bet Myers will do a good job.

Why not, Jedieb? It would make him happy to go see it. I'm curious to see what it'll be like myself. Cause I'm automatically reminded of The Grinch.

You were closer with your original subject of Crap in the Hat very fitting.

Yeah, I am boycotting this film. I don't usually agree with Roger Ebert but his review really torn this film apart. But he also said many key things in the review that caused me to totally shun this film. A definite must not see movie.

He still gave it 2 stars, though.

A 3.4 grade on the IMDb for CitH, btw.

If Dr. Seuss were still alive, this movie never would have been made. His widow apparently has zero respect for her late husband's work, and all she saw were dollar signs when she sold the rights to Universal. Needless to say, I have the same respect for her that she has for her late husband's work: zero.

I had the misfortune of seeing The Grinch in the theater. How The Grinch Stole Christmas is still my favorite Christmas toon of all time...I was curious to see how it would be in live-action. It was terrible, simply terrible. The first mistake they made was changing Dr. Seuss's original Cindy Lou, Cindy Lou Who who was no more than two...in the movie, she was more like 8 or 9. Then there was the stupid backstory for the Grinch...oy vey. I think Ron Howard is a terrific director and a fine human being, but he really screwed up on this one. I'll stick with my toon Grinch with Boris Karloff's wonderful voice, thank you very much.

The Grinch was so horrendous that I had much trepidation when I heard they were making The Cat In The Hat into a movie. Then I saw the trailers...then I saw the moment when The Cat looks at the picture of the kids' mom, his hat stands straight up in an obvious phallic reference, and you can see he's basically turned on by the kids' mom. Right then and there, I knew the trepidation I felt was justified. I will NOT be seeing this movie, even when it comes out on video. Dr. Seuss's work is sweet, charming, and innocent...it does not feature sexual overtones, scatalogical humor, or anything else cruddy like that. Read the book, do not see the movie.

My only hope is that this movie bombs horribly. The last thing I want to see is movie versions of Green Eggs And Ham or Horton Hears A Who. Please, God, anything but that.

And thanks ever so much, Audrey Geisel, for defiling the great work of Dr. Seuss. :verymad

You may very well have your wish come true. We will find out in a few hours when the friday estimates are out :)

Why do people HOPE something bombs? If it bombs, some people could lose jobs.

When a movie is bad, it deserves to bomb. Simple as that. As for the jobs, Universal is one of the last studios I would worry about employment wise. One studio's dissappointment is another studio's pleasure :)

It all boils to one thing though; making better movies.

I just see this movie as an excuse to merchandize millions of things to the kids of the poor, helpless parents who didn't know better...

Unfortunately, although that is disappointing for Universal, and I think its going to drop fast in the weeks ahead, that may not be low enough to exclude the possibility of a sequel.. :/

I've been lying in front of the TV most of the day, since I've been lucky enough to get a nice case of the flu. It's always such a nifty thing to be sick on a Saturday :x .

What's been appalling is seeing all the different commercials that are tie-ins with this movie. Cleaning supplies, fast food, MasterCard, bejeebus, what else? Oh, not to mention the actual clip from the movie I saw with an incredibly obnoxious plug for Universal Studios theme park. It was even worse than the WalMart gag in Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

That rumble you feel is Dr. Seuss rolling over in his grave.

And yes, if a movie bombs, people might lose their jobs, but y'know what? That's life. It happens to lots of people. I myself was laid off 10 years ago when the bottom fell out of the aerospace field. I was out of work for a year. But I survived, and I moved on, and I now have a good career. Other people can do it too. :angel

*works at Burger King and has to deal with CitH everything.* Including having to (but not actually complying with ;)) wear Cat
Hats :x Of course this movie is going to be commericalised, but it's really annoying.

I wouldn't worry about jobs being lost except maybe the guy who directed this movie might not direct one for a very long time.

Not to discredit the director entirely, is there any possible way to pull off a decent Cat in the Hat film?

Jedi Master Carr
Nov 22nd, 2003, 10:43:08 PM
I think it be possible, but the guy will get blamed for it even if it isn't. This is his first film ever so I don't see him getting another script for a while.

I think so, with a script that was more true to Dr. Seuss instead of being apparently full of sexual innuendo and scatalogical humor. While the director is somewhat at fault, the scriptwriters have to take a large amount of the blame as well.

Argh, $40 million estimated for the weekend. I've heard stories, though, about people walking out on the movie...I wonder how many of them bothered to ask for their money back? :evil

I would expect a major plummet in the BO figures over the Thanksgiving weekend, especially with The Haunted Mansion coming out. I'm looking forward to that one. :)

If Eddie Murphy can do worse than Pluto Nash it will be this movie.

How can you see that? The trailers look great and the movie looks very funny. Eddie Murphy never fails when it comes to family movies every one has been hits. I am thinking this movie is going to be huge and I bet it will make 50 million at least for the five days.

My wife's friend took my son and her kids to see it over the weekend thus sparing me the horror. I now refer to her as THE GREATEST WOMAN ON THE PLANET!!!! For what it's worth, my son liked it. But he's 5 and likes to run around the house with sticks, what the hell does he know?|I

He knows that Jango is a good guy in the game, but a bad guy in the movie. :lol
