Abagael Zellan
Nov 18th, 2003, 03:59:57 PM
Last week if anyone at the law firm Zellan and Zeelan had been asked if one Abagael Zellan would ever consider quitting, the answer would have been an unbelieving laugh.

Well, she was the one laughing now.

Maybe it was a midlife crisis, or a bad sexual encounter, or maybe she was even going insane. Whatever the case, Abagael had left a highly coveted position in the firm, a decision that was being nitpicked to pieces by the press. It was annoying she had to admit, but some of the explanations that they were coming up with were vaguely ammusing.

Abby had established a lot of things in the last week. The first was that she had no time to be a mother. There had always been an exit, and so the woman had copped out and custody of her son had been given to his father for the time being. Trent had been unusually accepting of the change, and so any guilt that she might have felt was out the window as soon as the child was out of sight. The second was that she didn't want to be a lawyer anymore. It wasn't fun anymore, there was no challenge, and she was sick and tired of working for her father. It wasn't all bad; there were still quite a few lawyers still employed in the firm who would have gladly screwed ethics and the law to do a favor for her. Abby knew them very well. They were all male.

Back in the day Abagael Zellan had made a living betting on shockboxing matches. Over the years the woman had kept track of the illegal circuits, who was rising in the standings, who was winning large amounts of creds continuously. There was something exciting about the whole operation, which was why she had been careful to stay away from it. Abby knew how easy it would be to get sucked back into the business. There had been too many risks and she hadn't wanted to go back to her old source of income. Until now.

How this and being a Jedi could work together she hadn't been able to work out yet.

So this was how she found herself in the lower levels, talking with the latest hot fighter. They were seated in an idle hovercab, smoking stims. While Abagael looked relaxed, the lean man beside her kept licking his lips in apprehension.

"So...McAllister's going down in the third?" Abby asked. The man nodded, looking out the window. His name was Jordan Merue, one of the rookies that everybody was betting on.

"Yeah. But hey listen Abagael...I don't know if you should get in on it."

Abby didn't change her facial expression, just sat smoking. "Why?" she pressed. Jordan licked his lips again and leaned forward.

"There's some pretty big fish that got Merue in their pocket. They find someone who's cuttin' in on their profits...I'm just sayin'."

A devil-may-care crossed the womans lips. "How big are these fish Jord?" She cocked her head,"Because I'm not a rookie down here."

Jordan swallowed. "I'm talking the biggest fish here Abby. And not just here, these guys are big names all over the place."

Another smile.

"The bigger the better, Jord."

The fight was to take place the next evening. As soon as Merue had been dropped off at a gym, Abagael was taken to a little non-descript building where she placed a substancially large bet with a bookie.

The game had begun.

Ruufe Shanks

The next evening, in the shockboxing arena, the fight Merue spoke of to Abby is about to take place. A thin, wiry, almost weak-looking boy with a straw hat is facing down a considerably more formidable foe. Any other kid would have been begging to be let out of this match, but this kid...he's a wierd one.

Ruufe Shanks, the challenger, is a ghastly pale, dark haired boy whose only distinguishing feature is the straw hat clapped to his head. his hands dangle loosely at his sides as he looks the opponent over.

"This'll be simple enough."

He just needs the signal of the start bell to begin the game.
