Okay here is the first week I am going to get this posted today to give you guys time to get your picks in since the Matrix Revolution opens Wed. Now you only have to pick Matrix 5 days everything else go with 3 day numbers (Fri-Sunday) so if you want you can post Matrix numbers before Thursday 9AM and post the rest before Saturday I will leave that to you. If you do it please post it in different posts, no editing.

Here are the rules if you need some refreshing

Period of contest: 6th of november - 4th of January

1. How to play: Each weekend, predict the order of the top 5 movies, and how much each film will make. To make sure people don’t make the same predictions, post your dollar figures to the nearest ten thousand, for example "25.58M" (25 million 580 thousand).

2. Movie Order Points: For every film you place in the correct order, you get 5 points. If you get #1- 5 right, you would get 25 points.

3. Accuracy Points: The closest person to each of the five films also gets points, and they are as follows;

# 1 - 25 pts
# 2 - 20 pts
# 3 - 15 pts
# 4 - 10 pts
# 5 - 5 pts

Please notice; you only get points for a movie if you have it in the right #1-5 position.

4. Double Points Weekends. Points are doubled on the following weekends:
* Thanksgiving; 28 november - 1st of december. All points are doubled.
* ROTK weekend; 17-21 december. Double points for ROTK 5-day weekend and the rest of the top 5.
* Matrix Revolution weekend 6-9 nov. Double points for Matrix prdiction.
*Christmas Weekend Dec. 25-28
*New Years Weekend Jan 1-4

5. "The Price is Right" - bonus for extreme accuracy. If someone guess a movie correct down to the nearest 10-thousandth, the contestant will be awarded with 50 extra points, in addition to the points he won that weekend. Example: If a movie makes 25.343M and you predict 25.34M, you will win the bonus.

6. Deadline: All predictions must be in by saturday 9 am EST every weekend. On double points weekends, special deadline will apply. Please make sure your predictions are in before the deadline, however, we may look the other way if the estimates are not yet made public and/or it is obvious such results have not been seen.

7. Who can play? Everyone. It is fun! You may enter or exit the contest at any time or post predictions whenever you like, as long it is within the deadline. Of course, be aware maximum participation increases your chances of a high score at the final tally, so it is recommended to participate as often as possible (it makes your predicting look smarter! ).

8. The winner: The player with the most points at the end of contest, wins instant fame and glory (being worshipped by the all the BO forum posters) AND the winner of the contest gets his/her choice of a 6 month free "Suporter" account (6 month extension if already a supporter) or a @sw-fans.net email address.

I will post the weekend numbers for this past weekend soon to give you guys some help.

Also reminder the points are double for the Matrix hence the reason I am doing a 5 day for it, if you post after the deadline it will still get counted but won't be doubled.

Marcus, so far Mojo hasn't made a 5 day prediction for the Matrix. It might later today but if it doesn't you might have to do that one and do Mojo for the rest. Also for everyone else time is coming up quickily don't wait too late or your picks won't count.

Can I just point out that the deadline for picks came after the Mojo prediction, so my waiting until the end meant I was too late.

Just telling you for the next special deadline :)

Master Yoghurt

You're not too late Fett. The original deadline was thursday 9am EST. According to JMC, the deadline has been extended to 4pm. There are no estimates out yet. Hurry, and post your Matrix pick while you still have the chance :)

1. Matrix Revolutions - 119.99 (5-day)
2. Elf - 29.99
3. Brother Bear - 19.99
4. Scary Movie 3 - 9.99

According to Brandon Lee of BOM, 'Revolutions' made about $24.4 million at 3,502 theaters on its opening day Wednesday. By comparison, 'Reloaded' took in $37,508,303 at 3,603 theaters (not including $5 million in previews from the previous night).

:lol I meant Brandon Gray

Anyway, this looks not so bright for Revolutions. From 37 to 24. If that is any indication, it will gross conciderable less than Reloaded. I am thinking of a total gross close to 200M now.

Jedi Master Carr
Nov 6th, 2003, 12:22:06 PM
I am not entirely surprised, Reloaded disapointed some movegoers from what I have read.

Also if anybody still wants to participate they can, just post their picks for the other 4 and those will still count, just can't get points for the Matrix.

Master Yoghurt
Nov 6th, 2003, 01:01:14 PM
You know, that was exactly the way I was thinking up until yesterday. Then I read <a href=http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031105/en_nm/leisure_matrix_dc_2>this</a> article, and I started having doubts.. here some delicious quotes:

"We've had tremendous crowds!"

and..

"..his phone had been ringing off the hook since the curtain rose on "Revolutions" at 9 a.m. EST with tales of sold-out crowds. He said several theaters reported selling $40,000 worth of tickets before noon"

:headbash

Man, I should know better than trust anything from those guys. I will trust my own instincts from now on :rolleyes

Heck, at this rate, its possible it may not break 100M for 5 days. Think about it. Thursday is definitely going to be lower than wednesday and the 3-day count is going to be a lot lower than the 90M Reloaded made, perhaps in the 60M region. And with mixed word of mouth and the poor reviews, I think its going to drop fast in the weeks ahead..

40% isnt poor reviews. That's MIXED :)

And to be honest, the majority of the people I've heard from liked it. I personally think WOM is overrated. These days, people are either going to see Revolutions or not. I don't think theres a huge group waiting to hear about it.

Oh and Yog, I went at 11AM, the two showings before were all but full and the one I went to was pretty full. Considering this is day 2, I can believe tremendous crowds and the like.

And did you really expect it'd do better than Reloaded?

Master Yoghurt
Nov 6th, 2003, 03:24:57 PM
If youre talking about Rotten Tomatoes, I'd suggest you take a closer look at the ratings. Most of those listed as 'fresh' are not so positive at all. If you look at the Cream of the Crop, the picture gets even worse, 28%. Very few critics give Revolution a genuinly good review. Likewise, many or the 'rotten' reviews are really bad. Now, I personally believe its nowhere near as bad as the critics say. On the contrary! I think its probably a very enjoyable movie.

However, what *I* think matters nothing. There is a large prejudice this movie is a huge disappoinment. The casual viewer is certain to be discouraged, and even some Matrix fans say they wont see it. Now thats going to hurt the box office quite a bit.

You are probably right though, there is generally 2 categories of people; those who will see it, and those who wont. I just dont think those who see it and give it a thumbs up is enough to prevent this movie from being heavily frontloaded. A lot of people made up their minds allready.

And did you really expect it'd do better than Reloaded? Not really. My original pick was certainly of the more pesimistic kind. However, the image being painted by representatives from the two largest theater chains, would have suggested a larger opening, in the 30M vicinity. Maybe there are some sell outs, but overall its not packed. In fact, there are crowd reports indicating the direct opposite.

Master Yoghurt
Nov 6th, 2003, 04:08:24 PM
Also, what occured to me, one of the major differences between the opening box office runs of Reloaded and Revolutions, is the time of the week. Reloaded only had the $5M midnight screenings on wednesday. This time around, it was showing all day, so its practically one extra day. With a 30-33M opening, it would have made a great headstart for the first two days and it would suggest a much stronger 3-day weekend than we may expect now. While actually beating Reloaded's 5-day opening was an unrealistic scenario, it *could* have had a shot at a more comparable result, 125M + or better for example

ReaperFett
Nov 6th, 2003, 04:55:01 PM
Right Yog, now to show you're expecting a bit too much :)

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/days/?page=wed&p=.htm - 3rd highest Wednesday opening EVER

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/days/?page=open&p=.htm - 11th highest opening day EVER

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/days/?page=single&p=.htm - 35th highest day EVER

Sounds like a very good opening to me :)

Master Yoghurt
Nov 6th, 2003, 05:15:09 PM
Hey, I never said it was a *bad* opening. Any movie taking 20M+ on a weekday is doing great, brilliant in fact. I am talking about actual performance compared to potential performance. I dont think the heads of WB executives are rolling over this, if that is what you are implying. The Matrix movies are all box office hits, and like the previous chapters, its going to be a very profitable :)

ReaperFett
Nov 6th, 2003, 05:17:01 PM
As it should be :)

Master Yoghurt
Nov 6th, 2003, 05:45:53 PM
Yeah, I suppose :)

Btw, I am actually one of those few who really *loved* Matrix Reloaded. I don't know what planet those who got disappointed by it are living on. And I have no idea what exactly they were expecting. It got some amazing action sequences, some cool special effects and a high pulse. What else can you really ask for? The philosophy and the riddles (which are typically branded as trash by the naysayers), just makes the whole movie a more fascinating experience, IMO. I allmost get the impression causing the viewer to ponder about what he/she has seen is concidered a bad thing from what I read some places. Why does all the answers have to be feed by a teaspoon? I think its much more interesting when one can contemplate and wonder whats going on. Much like an abstract painting. One interpretation differs from the other, and you can observe and rationalise from your own point of view.

Sorry :)

I liked/loved Reloaded too. Matrix was just an abundance of fancy little things with a plot. With Reloaded, it felt as if they were making a movie, not a music video.

For example, bullet time. In Matrix, I can think of three times it was used. Both sequels combined? Once or twice.

The problem that I had with Reloaded was the horrible pacing and lack of a coherent story for the first half an hour. :)

I personally think it aint going to break 100 for the 5 days. I mean, first that 'lukewarm' opening day (compared to Reloaded that is), then it has a 54% drop the day after. So much for repeated viewings..

To be fair though, I kinda expected a 50% drop, just had to see it to believe it. I hope it makes 97M, so I wont have to regret changing my pic the last minute :p

Btw, for those reading this thread, its still not too late entering the contest. Just post #2-5 before 9 am EST tomorrow. Where is JediEb, JMK and the other box office veterans? Come on and play, its fun. You too De'Ville! :)

Concidering thursday numbers, I will do some changes for my 3-day pics before the weekend:

# 3. Brother Bear - 14.05M
# 5. Radio - 8.05M

BB could do higher, but not much. Radio has been holding up well through the week. I believe Scary Movie 3 will do lower than my original prediction, but its a crowd around the 9-10M picks, so I wont change that one. Expect around 50% drop for that one. My other picks stay the same.

Elf will be huge. I am thinking of a similar box office run to last years Santa Clause. Opening weekend could surprise quite a few people. Love Actually should do generally great, but is IMO playing on too few screens to hit the top 5. Could be wrong though, we shall see..

Looks like every movie did pretty much exactly what I thought they would. Not a bad start. Here are my comments on the top 5:

Matrix: I expected around 18M for friday, and that was a pesimistic measure, or so I thought! Its not going to break 60 for 3 days now. Congratulations to Syo for 50 points well earned. 16.7M tells a lot about whats going to happen in the weeks ahead. This movie got no lasting power at all, it has every symtom of a frontloader. I predict next weekend its going to drop by at least 50%! Thats gotta hurt! :lol

Elf: Just like I thought it would make! Talk about hitting the exact mark, hehe. Its a family movie, so the multiplyer will be good. I expect to win the #2 this weekend a nose before ReaperFett.

BB: This one is looking very good for me as well! Its a family movie with lots of kids seeing it though, so it should have a good result for saturday. Its not over before the fat lady sings.

Scary Movie: Just like I thought it would make. Its going to be around 10M for the weekend I think. Should have gone a little lower on this one, just like I said to myself.

Radio/LA: Well, its going to be a tight race. In the end though, I think Radio will win. LA benefits from opening day result, so Radio will probably have a slightly better multiplyer.

Jedi Master Carr

I am surprised Love Actually made so much, it only debuted on 500 screens that has got to be a huge theater average. Matrix Revolution is doing worse than I even thought looks like it might barely get past 200 right now.

Master Yoghurt
Nov 8th, 2003, 01:03:31 PM
I am not that surprised, because it sold out in online tickets sales, and the crowd reports were very promising. But yeah, we are talking about more than $10,000 in theater aberage for Love Actually. They did a mistake relasing it on so few screens. I think it will generate som decent WOM. With an increased theater count, it may have some legs. This weekend though, I am fairly certain Radio is going to do better with a good multiplyer. Just look what it did the last weekend from the friday result. To be honest, I dont think LA got a chance for the 5th spot.

Elf is having a great WOM, and good reviews. Its a good family movie, which appeals across all age groups. I expect a low drop off the next weekend. Say hello to Santa Clause #3

Matrix Revolution, what can I say. At this rate, its 5 day gross will not beat Reloaded's 3 day gross. Every warning light is flashing right now: This will drop like a rock! I am very sceptic right now about its future performance. Actually, to be honest at this stage, I am thinking it wont even break 200. Who would have thought that a week ago. Certainly not me.

I read some comparisons to BTTF 2 and 3 in terms of Box office gross it is an interesting comparrison.

Master Yoghurt
Nov 8th, 2003, 01:41:56 PM
Back to the Future? Yeah, that is an interesting comparison. #2 and #3 were released 6 months apart, and 3 did not do as good as #2. I can see some similarities here. I think though in the long run, Revolutions will drop faster percentage wise compared to BTTF III (WOM & reviews). Generally, just as was the case with BTTF, one can assume Revolutions was released too fast. They should have waited at least one year, releasing it in may 2004.

Here are the numbers (did them quickly on my calculator) :

Back to the Future II
Total gross: $118,450,002
Opening weekend: $27,835,125

Back to the Future III
Total gross: $87,727,583 (-26%)
Opening weekend: $19,089,645 (-31%)

Matrix II
Total gross: $281,553,689
Opening weekend (5 day): $134,282,716

Matrix III
Total gross: ~ 200? (-28%)
Opening weekend (5 day): ~ 90M? (-32%)

It is similar I always thought BTTF 3 came out too soon. The same thing might be the case here. Though next summer is very crowded I don't think WB wanted to release Harry Potter and Matrix at the same time.

Elf was hillarious, it was a good clean comical family film, any money it makes it rightly deserves.

It was a refreshing change to the trash that Hollywood tries to pass of as comedy, rather simply being funny by having a good idea, a good script and good actors.

Matrix Revolutions was awesome in my opinion, I am dumbfounded by its bad reviews. I think its the blood in the water trend where reviewers can not admit to liking a slightly inane film thats sole purpose is to entertain.

If Matrix Revolutions makes 85M in 5 days like the estimate says, I predict it will make 178.5M total gross.

Matrix reloaded:
134M opening, 281M total
134 x 2.1 = 281

Matrix revolutions:
85 x 2.1 = 178.5
85M opening, 178M total

You know this is fitting I remember we all underestimated Matrix Reloaded and now we all overestimate Revolution talk about ironic.

Well that is because it opened wider overseas. I think that record will continuely get beat ROTK will beat it next and then probably Harry Potter next year. Especially since movies are opening wider and wider overseas.

While 85.5 million is a ton of cash, it's still viewed as a little disappointing because it made less in it's opening weekend than Reloaded did:

The sci-fi Matrix saga lost some of its spin at the U.S. box office, with “The Matrix Revolutions” pulling in $50.16 million in its opening weekend - off 45 percent from the previous chapter’s weekend debut.
45% is a significant drop, even if it did open on a wednesday (can't remember if Reloaded did).
Just stirring the pot. :p

Guys, IT IS THE RECORD. There is NO dissapointment there. Woo, one country lost 45%. Everywhere else GAINED. It did well.

think that record will continuely get beat ROTK will beat it next and then probably Harry Potter next year.
Oh well in that case it did awful, didn't it. I mean, what's a world record opening, someone will beat it eventually :rolleyes

I agree that in this age records don't mean squat. They DO NOT mean anything any more. They are all being broken months apart. Who cares if a movie sets a certain record? It's as good as broken. The only records that mean anything are the all time domestic and world wide records. The rest are barely worth mentioning IMO.

ReaperFett
Nov 10th, 2003, 01:45:45 PM
Why care about the Oscars or the SUperbowl? SOmeone different will only end up winning them the next year.

Can't you just accept it did well? You keep clinging to "Oooh, it dropped 45%!", but it did better overall in it's first week. PERIOD.

Marcus Telcontar
Nov 10th, 2003, 01:56:17 PM
No, the term is "It performed well below expectations"

Cant YOU accept that?

ReaperFett
Nov 10th, 2003, 01:57:51 PM
Breaking the record for opening weekends is "well below expectations?" For who? The most optimistic guy in the world?

I can see Joel Silver jumping out his window now, I tell you. Such a failure!

Marcus Telcontar
Nov 10th, 2003, 02:09:41 PM
Oh well, if you actually consider the facts for half a second, which you are usually loath to do with your strawmanning, the fact that no movie has opened in anywhere near the amount of theatres or screens before and that opening weekend records WW are very easy to get if you do that makes said record plain rubbish and worthless.

They can crap on all they want about the records. The facts truly are is that in terriories, Revolutions opens 20 - 30% lower than Reloaded (eg, the USA, Aust.....). Or more.

ReaperFett
Nov 10th, 2003, 02:11:35 PM
Got any evidence for this outside of the US?

JMK
Nov 10th, 2003, 02:29:03 PM
You keep clinging to "Oooh, it dropped 45%!", but it did better overall in it's first week. PERIOD.
First of all, I'm not clinging to anything. I mentioned it once. Actually I quoted it and then stated that 45% is a significant drop. And it is. Just to stir the pot. Throw in another opinion. Offer another viewpoint. You know, what discussions usually need to thrive? Opposing viewpoints?

Really, who's the one clinging?

And don't compare box office takes to sports or the oscars. Winning one Super Bowl isn't a record. It's a year by year competition, and no one can take away the fact that you win an Oscar or Super Bowl. Unlike these bogus records which 2 months later belong to another movie. Winning an Oscar or Super Bowl is a special and (usually) a once in a lifetime feat. These useless box office records rise and fall sometimes within weeks of each other and no longer carry any weight or significance. Who the hell cares? Clingers, that's who. People who need lame 'fastest to reach 100M' or 'Biggest 4 day take in history' to justify a movie's quality and superiority need these records. PERIOD.

ReaperFett
Nov 10th, 2003, 02:33:11 PM
If the box office doesn't matter, what are we doing in this thread? ;)

Not that it matters btw, but you wasn't YOU, it was you being you people.

And I warn you, you better never mention records again. I'm watching ya :)

Well I never said that the records were not impressive, just insignificant because they are extraordinarily temporary.

Jedi Master Carr
Nov 10th, 2003, 03:09:51 PM
Marcus is right here it opened in more theaters, realize until recently movies never opened this wide overseas, but since last year more movies have been open wider and wider. Star Wars Attack of the Clones was the first to start this trend. Matrix though now has the largest opening, in terms of theaters but I am sure ROTK and Harry Potter will have a wider realease and those two films will do even more than Matrix a lot more, IMO because they are even more beloved overseas.

The other point forgotten is that the 'record' that Revolutions claimed was based on estimates. The gap isd narrow enough that TTT could still hold it, now I see the actuals are lower.

48.5 for Matrix on the three day??? That's very ordinary. Definantly not soemthign to be pleased with.

Playing on 18,000 screens at 10,013 theaters in 109 markets, Revolutions downloaded an estimated $204.1 million in five days. Overseas territories accounted for an estimated $118.6 million of that sum, topping The Matrix Reloaded's $113.2 million and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers' $99.4 million (in 27 markets) as the biggest five-day international debut ever.

Note the markets figure. TTT in 27. Matrix Rev in 109!!!!! Another point is that TTT opened two weeks later than the USA in Aust, made 15 mil, compared to Rev's 5.5.

Even that just shows how worthless this 'record' claimed is. Put HP, ROTK on that many screens first week, Rev's would be beaten by 50 - 100 million at least.

At the current pace, and with the same percentage drop offs as Matrix Reloaded, it will make 176M. That puts it at 6th spot, above Terminator 3's 150M and under X2's 214M. Here is the run down of the top grossing movies of 2003 so far: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2003&p=.htm

Carr, would you like me to calculate the points, or would you rather do it? :)

:: insert contest commercial ::

Next weekend, will be terrible exciting for box office, as no less than 4 movies fight for the number one spot!

Once again, Neo is going to fight the machines, and unless he gets Mr. Smithed by angry Matrix fans or everyone fall asleep during the bullettime, he will hack some more millions to WB's bank account. How deep does the rabbit hole go?

Elf attempts to dig a bigger hole, drawing in the family audience and getting everyone in an early christmas mood. With a 31M opening, good reviews and word of mouth, is it going to be a surprise sleeper hit?

Russel Crowe would rather not sleep that weekend, as <a href=http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/master_and_commander/>Master and Commander</a> opens in 2800 theaters. In this grand ship battle drama, he will attempt to lure the accademy to vote for him. Is it going to command the weekend Gladiator style or is it going to sink to the bottom of the ocean?

Tune in next week to find out, OR toon in to <a href=http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/looneytunesbackinaction/trailer/>Looney Tunes!</a> This Roger Rabbit lookalike mixes live actors with Warner Brothers cartoon characters. Looks like a fun movie to me, but then again; Im a looney! And so are you if you don't play next weekend, because who in their sane minds would miss out on a chance to win 6 free months of supporter account!? :eek

Dont know how to play? No problem, just ask and we will help you out. Its really simple; post the top five movies and how many millions you think they are going to make. Even easier, just look what the box office vets are guessing, and juggle the numbers around a slight bit. Its still not to late to enter the contest, the race has barely started! Be there or be square!

No record for you, Joe Silver!
