Ok, so I have a bunch of swords, knives, and bladed instruments of death and dismemberment.
I now have my new favorite.
<img src=http://www.panic.hopto.org/swf/charley/kb_marine.jpg>
United States Marine Corps Ka-bar fighting knife.
12 inches from blade tip to pommel.
7 inch blade
Full tang (slot in pommel connects to the blade metal)
Ringed leather grip
Blood groove in blade
Razor sharp edge (I can easily slice paper with it)
USMC engraved into base of the blade.
Scabbard includes a grip fastener, belt loop, and a lanyard for tying onto the leg.
This knife, while designed as a utilitarian tool, is easily the most adept killing tool I now carry in my arsenal, save for my pistol.

How much did you get it for, Charley? And where did you get it? I want one, tried to get one a few weeks ago but I forgot about it when I got to the Army Surplus store cuz I had alot of other things to get.
Charley

$26, plus 7 shipping. Total of 33.
That's $7 less than my friend, who's a Lieutenant in the Corps air division, can get one for.
So, its safe to say its a good deal.

Nice. They are standard issue arent they? I figured theyd sell for alot less than that. I was hoping about 20, but 30 bucks isn't bad.

Not sure if they're still standard issue. Its probably more of a cultural icon now. Its the most recognizable fighting knife in the world.

Well they were a few years ago. Ya know I've got a pair of friends that hunt wild boar with Ka-Bar's. I would too if I had the time.

I imagine that hunting anything with a Ka-bar would be successful. That knife is built like a tank.
Nothing like thrusting a 1 pound slab of razor-sharp steel at something. At that point, something's gonna give, and it won't be the knife.

Is that literally a groove to let it all run out?

A blood groove is a common feature in combat blades, dating back to antiquity. It allows you to pull a blade from flesh without it getting stuck. Otherwise, when you stab somebody, the fluid seal created by blood would cause a suction effect. Your blade would get stuck in them. All a blood groove does is break the seal, and allow you to pull your blade free from whatever/whoever you're stabbing.

Used in what manner? To hurt/kill somebody? No, not yet.
To do various other tasks? Sure. All the time.

USMC = killing with quality since the 1800's!
<img src=http://www.panic.hopto.org/swf/charley/pics/kb05.jpg>
Want multi-functional? How bout a butter knife?
<img src=http://www.panic.hopto.org/swf/charley/pics/kb06.jpg>
Now that's a Semper Fi split roll! Chow's on, grunts!
<img src=http://www.panic.hopto.org/swf/charley/pics/kb07.jpg>
No time to hit the head and scrape your face the proper way? That's just fine. Ka-Bar can do that too!

Smoky Mountain Knife Works = best place to buy knives, swords, etc. For some reason, blades up around Sevierville, Pidgeon Forge, Gatlinburg, TN are really cheap. Akrabbim orders from these guys often. I've bought numerous blades up at the China Bazaar in Gatlinburg, who I believe is a SMKW subsidiary.

im gonna check around the army surplus stores around here to find some prices. But I was looking around and this caught my eye:
Black Wooden Samurai Set (http://www.weaponmasters.com/index.html?ID=d28574f0d9771c4e4ff45d9e86d5d007&ITEM=JBL-758B4&SORT=PRICE_UP&FDX=1&FMAX=10)
What you think?
Dan the Man
Nov 3rd, 2003, 12:19:06 AM
Not for $80, no.
Too much information that isn't available. Is the scabbard lacqured, or is it unfinished? What is the tang like? Etc.
For a relatively unsharpened blade at average quality, you can certainly find better prices.
Ace McCloud
Nov 3rd, 2003, 12:21:05 AM
Alright, ill try to find the same thing on SMKW, though i wish it was easier to navigate and such.

Yeah its a bit tricky...but deals are to be had there!
I did find this on that site you showed me...have to say it piqued my interest.
MORE Gladius! (http://www.weaponmasters.com/index.html?ID=d28574f0d9771c4e4ff45d9e86d5d007&ITEM=C-87&SORT=PRICE_UP&FDX=1&FMAX=10>Gladius!</a>

That black, wooden samurai sword looks like that of O-Ren Ishii. I want! :D
Charley
Nov 3rd, 2003, 10:49:12 AM
O-Ren's blade had a tang line in the grip. The set I have does not.
Didn't realize it was a full set. That's almost a good price, then.

Check the gallery then. I uploaded them there also.
Ace McCloud
Nov 3rd, 2003, 04:30:21 PM
Yea, a full set for 80 bucks isnt bad. Though I wish the quality was higher and it was sharper, but I doubt I'll be using it very much. And if there is a killing I need to do...I'll probably just have it sharpened. :evil
And SMKW doesn't have it either.
Ace McCloud
Nov 3rd, 2003, 04:30:40 PM
And plus I probably won't be paying for it.....Christmas =P
Charley
Nov 3rd, 2003, 05:37:38 PM
If you're not paying for it, then why not pony up for a single Cold Steel folded katana?
Ace McCloud

There is a price limit, but how much would that be....?
Dan the Man
Nov 3rd, 2003, 08:39:22 PM
