Okay, as Halloween draws near, I'd like to take this moment to ask everybody what they're going to be. or what their favorite costume ever was.

I am going to be a samurai, if I can get my costume made, and I'll post pictures once it is done.

So, what about the rest of you?

Nosferatu.

I'll shave my hair and stay up for a month, no sleep or food to get his gaunt expression. Wear black and a little pair of fangs. Perfect.

I'm going to be Disgruntled. Disgruntled is short for "Disgruntled Underfed Overworked College Student. All I need to do is wear my pajamas, glare, and carry my plastic sword and hit people with it when they ask how I'm feeling.

My favorite costume was when I went dressed as a Roaring 20's gal with beads and tassley fringed skirt, feather head band and boa...ahh was fun.

The Best costume I ever did was dressing my daughter as Scully from the X-files (back in the Xf hey dey). She was just like a mini Scully with orange hair, a plastic gun, cell phone, FBI ID tag black blazer, white blouse. Every one was "oh its Scully!" when she went to the door.

I was very proud :)

Well, for those of you who are lacking ideas, here are some easy ones for you.

Number one: The "No, really, Dungeons and Dragons is Totally cool" look.

http://www.nehantish.com/Armor-Dude.jpg

First, get your grandma to make a tunic for you. Then take some tin cans and beat them with a hammer until you have gaunlets. A coffee can will do for the neck guard. Then, don't bathe for a week, and cover yourself with convention badges. This is a scary costume, and even scarier if they are all Furry Convention badges.

And, the "No, Really, I'm Only a Team Mascot" look.

http://www.nehantish.com/Creepy-Coon.jpg

This is an easy costime idea, but it is not without it's harrowing experiences to attain. First, you must locate a known Furry congregating area, or find a Furry convention. Cover yourself in con badges to gain the furry's trust, and then lead him off to a dak alley where you have a small mob waiting with wiffle bats to beat the furry into submission. Steal his costume, and you're set. Just make sure you get them early in the day to assure a nice, clean fursuit. By no means should you attempt to steal a fursuit after nine in the evening.

Speaking of, one of my friends watched those "How to Draw Teh Furry" videos you posted, and drew a furry based on those videos. We're testing to see if it's true, because he wants more people to check his works on deviantART. If I can get his permission, I'll post the picture he drew.

I thought about going as Wakka from Final Fantasy X. But I don't have the Yellow overalls or the abs to make it work. Or the orange hair dye. Or the sandals. Then I'd need to paint my kick ball white with blue stripes...

OR I was going to go as a Black Mage from Final Fantasy Tactics for Halloween. THat one was more do-able, but I can't get a hold of a coat like I need to do it.

Well, here's the sketch for my costume. No, I don't really have a katana, but I do have a bokken. Still need to track down some tatami sandals and toe-socks, though.

I'm going as a Nazgul. :) It's a pretty freaky looking costume too -- thick and long black robes with a nifty hood that stays on my head and doesn't fall down (yay!) and a faceless black mask to wear beneath the hood (though the mask has the appearance that a hood is around it, it's an added effect and actually looks awesome). :) I also have a pretty huge sword that I'm going to be sportin'. I already scared some little kids at a local "fright night" thing at the zoo -- it was pretty awesome. :) I'm doing a haunted house tomorrow night and going to Six Flags on Saturday for Fright Fest.

I'm not getting dressed up, but my mum is, as a wizard (for when she hands out sweets). It's been a while since we were in an area with younger kids in it, so I think she's getting into the spirit of it all. She asked me to put on my trench, don some shades and look imposing but I don't think any amount of brooding could make me look imposing, so I'm passing :)

Weeeeeeeeell... today there's a costume contest at work. So I've dressed up as Arwen, complete with blue shimmery dress, Evenstar lecklace, and elven ears. Alas, I could not find any blue contacts that fit the shape of my eye.

I'll get some pics and post em up if I can find a camera.

As for tomorrow, I may either once again dress up in my Arwen costume, or dress up in my LV costume (black pleather-like pants and top, silver belt, black knee-high boots, black cloak, double-bladed lightsaber, and a cat-titude)

And once again, if I have a camera at my disposal, pictures will be taken and posted. :)

Charley
Oct 31st, 2003, 02:04:09 AM
Glad you like the nose. That's all makeup, right there.

I have a latex muzzle prosthetic, but it kinda sucks. I don't like the way it adheres (not a uniform seal, and it kinda comes low on the upper lip. That, and its extremely hard to match color tone with the stuff I have on my face. The muzzle prosthetic always came out darker. So, I ditched it, and used grease paint for the noze. Laid the black on thick to give it a "wet nose" look.

The grease paint takes a while. A good 30 minutes on getting the right coverage, and then blending it uniformly. Dealing with skin at the hairline sucks. You just gotta push the paint, sometimes with fingers instead of an application sponge.

Lipstick (yes, I used lipstick) was a cinch.

Nail polish (yes, also used nail polish) was relegated to a lady friend of mine. I don't trust myself with doing that properly.

The hair gel was fun to do. I love doing my hair up like this. I wish I could get away with it year-round.

Blood effects. I have numerous blood sources.

1. Tube of non-edible blood gel. I use this around my face, in smears. Looks really good.

2. Tube of corn syrup based blood gel. This is perfect for the lips and in the mouth. A few drops on the teeth will make the fangs nice and bloody looking for a few minutes.

3. Mouth blood caps. I haven't used them yet. I have two.

4. Thick blood gel. This is for liquid latex applications. I may use this tomorrow.

Fangs. Once the custom molds are set, these are simple to wear. You pop em in your mouth, align with your tongue, and suck on them slightly to cause a vacuum effect between the mold and your teeth. They stay on pretty well. I was able to drink at the part with ease, not worrying about losing my teeth. I did take them out once to eat a cookie...but once that was done, they went right back in.

Ears. They didn't adhere flush with my head, and that kinda bugged me. Nevertheless, they worked extremely well. I got them to adhere well enough to be satisfied. Also, they were very closely flesh-toned to what I was already going for. All I had to do was streak a little grease paint in certain spots to give it a better color balance, and make it look a bit more dynamic and lifelike.

Right now, I'm debating on fooling around with the liquid latex and scar tissue putty. I'd like to make a built up laceration that runs just above an eyebrow, through that eyebrow, and below that from the cheekbone down midways on the face. Build that up, match flesh tones, and fill that wound with gel blood. If I can pull it off, it'll look nice. If not, I'll scrap it.

I'm also considering using black tooth wax to "sculpt" sharp teeth for my incisors and lower teeth. If it works, it should make the effect that much nicer.

The rest? All black costume, gothy bling, etc. its pretty straightforward.

When I do this again tomorrow night, I'll make more pictures.

How did you accomplish such a realistic texture with the makeup?

Charley
Oct 31st, 2003, 02:10:15 AM
I dunno how realistic it actually was. It seemed ok to me, but I think the webcam might be sugar-coating it. I used a sponge to apply the grease paint. It works well for keeping the streaking and tell-tale application marks to a minimum, so that helps. My mom suggested using such things. The best you can get are the compact application sponges that come in cosmetic kits. They're very soft and work well with smoothing.

Its also great to scare the hell out of people, even when they most expect it. After all, you're going to a halloween party. You know there will be scary-ish things, so you should be prepared. Right?

My samurai costume is now fit only to be burned. I frikking hate crappy sewing machines. I will not be dressing up this year after all

I got the under-kimono all done, the pants mostly done, and as I was putting some trim on the regular kimono, the stupid sewing maching screws the heck up and yanks threads from here there and everywhere, completely botching the whole thing.
