For anything and everything anyone may have ideas for.

The forum names and descriptions are hardly set in stone, as this is all just in proposal and testing stages, so if you have any ideas at all, speak up.

Your Forum demands it!!! >D ;)

I was browsing for usergroup related hacks, so I found a few boardwide ones which seem interesting. If there is not too much of an increase in database queries, maybe they are worth checking out. Not sure if the spider hack is installed allready.

<a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?&threadid=57305>QuickStats 1.1</a> (Im a sucker for stats)

<a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=47087>Search Engine Spiderable Hack</a> (should generate more visitors => new members)

<a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=49810>Miserable Users</a> (an alternative to banning misbehaving users. A bit sadistic perhaps, but effective ;))

<a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=50585>User Thread Banning</a> (extended moderator functionality)

Oh, and about the community letter, is it going to be generated by something like Set Style based on usergroup (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16161>this</a>)
* <a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35423>Search members by custom profile fields</a>
* <a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=33034>Member's Photo Gallery</a> (is this one is in the pipeline allready?)
* <a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=41166>Custom User Status by Usergroup</a>

Hope I found something that could be of use :)

Oh god, I'm laughing my ass off at the Miserable User hack. It's the Internet's Revenge.

I'll comment on each of the hacks you've linked and let you know why or why not.

Quickstats:
I doubt I'll be adding this hack as most of the stats it includes are already present in one form or another through our already existing stats hack. Another reason I am hesitant to install it is the fact that stats hacks tend to be very server load intensive, requiring several dozen complex DB queries.

Spider Hack:
This hack I will probably install, but it will be no different for "paid" and non-paid members. I have looked at several spider style hacks and think this one might actually work for us since we already have the required Apache modules in place.

Miserable Users Hack:
This hack just seems a little too sadistic for my tastes. If I find reason for someone to face disciplinary action, then it will be straightforward and simple to understand. This hack gives me the impression that affected users may just think that our site runs poorly.

User Thread banning:
This thread wouldn't work well on our forums. If every user here had only a single name it might. Also this hack does not work on forum mods (group mods here) and our list of group mods is huge, thus negating its effectiveness.

Community Bulletin hack:
That hack is ancient. vB already has the ability to build mailing lists built in and as such mass message distribution is not difficult.

Bigger PM Box (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=43148):
Now this idea I like as a "paid" member premium. I will investigate this possibility further and see if I am able to implement it somehow. (existing hack found)

Forum specific signatures:
I would definitely have to code such a hack myself and it would then require additions to the UserCP and a few DB tables, making it quite complex to do and also confusing for newer members to the forums. I doubt I will pursue this as a possibility.

Set Style based on Usergroup:
No, that would lock users into a single style, and thus take away a freedom/feature that already exists.

Search members by profile fields:
What’s the point? I would guess that more than 50% of our users that do fill out the profile fields, do it with bugus/joke information anyhow, while more than 50% don't even fill the fields out, so what good is a search feature for this?

Members Photo Gallery:
If I find an option that allows each member (maybe specified by usergroup) a method to have a single personal picture (limited in size physically and filesize) then maybe, but all those I have seen so far are lacking in control. Photopost is in the pipeline (see the longer thread in this forum for more info and links) but is somewhat different and quite a big feature.

Custom User Status by Usergroup:
I see a this as something that breaks my own personal belief about CTs in public forums here at SWFans. Custom status is basically a change in usertitle/CT, and in the public boards at SWFans could create headaches and a half for the staff. It promotes elitism and favoritism, and would be likely to case separatism, IMO.

Thanks for the suggestions/ideas. I really appeciate the feedback and creativity they promote.

The Web Spider/Text Archive hack has been applied.

I am going to start working on the PM Quota hack soon.

Oh man... I love the Miserable Users hack. This, unfortunately, just isn't the board to use it on. Still, the thought of maybe placing one or two people into this usergroup and quietly watching them suffer is tempting. >D

PM Quota hack added. "Paid" members now have a limit of 250 PMs in their folders compared to the standard 100.

Its ok, just trying to give some creative input. I kinda figured most of these hacks would probably not be used, since I know you frequently visit that site for updates. However, conciderable amount of thought went into these suggestions, so I will have to comment on some of those, in order to explain the rationale.

Spider Hack: Great to see you found something that could be used!

Quickstats: People who tested it says it runs fine with 17k users and an average of 300 users online. The hack author also claims that since it runs in a separate window, it reduces the server load somehow. Not sure how that works. Is it only when a poster views the stats database queries are generated, or are the stats updated continously increasing the overall server load? In any case, I agree its not that important of a feature. Adding a bit more details to the stats would be nice at some point though.

Miserable Users Hack: You are right. I actually did not expect you to implement the hack 'as is', in this extreme form. I partly posted it for the laugh. However, it may be worth looking into alternative ways of dealing diciplinary action. What I have in mind would be a milder form of punishment than an outright banning. Removing or reducing *some* of the posting priveledges may prove more educating and effective at getting the message across than constant and repeated PM'ing by moderators in some cases. Excactly what these reductions in posting privileges entails in, may be up to debate when/if it becomes an idea to concider in the future.

User Thread banning: It would work for super mods and above though, who are probably the only ones going to need such a powerful tool anyway. When enforcing it, only useraccounts which reasonably could be expected being used in the thread should be affected. If the user in question switches username, it is evidence of deliberate circumvention of forum staff policy and may be grounds for other and/or more stricter diciplinary actions. I see great potential in such a feature. It allows a mod to stop a poster from persisting in rule breaking behavior in an offended thread. That way, if its an important thread, it can continue without the risk of being locked down. I have seen examples where this feature could have been effectively used.

Forum specific signatures: Fair enough. If its complex to implement, its probably not worth the effort.

Search members by profile fields: Well, thats a good point. Not everyone fills the profile fields with nonsense though. Take a look at my profile for example. A random user can search for the keyword 'Norway', and come up with all the users who live there. Search for student, and you see all who are studying. Search for movies, and you find the users who have this interest listed. If someone were searching for a RP character, try searching for 'Sith' or 'Jedi' or group keywords like "The Sith Order" or "Kuklos Ataxia", and you will find members affiliated with these factions. The biography field often contains many good keywords as well. Maybe its not the most powerful or significant feature, but I think it could be useful to some extent.

Custom User Status by Usergroup: Well, its a way of showing who is supporting the community, much like the ezsupporter icon. I can see your concerns though. I suppose the custom profiles will serve the purpose of this information, without being too visible.

Members Photo Gallery: Sounds like reasonable reservations there, Ogre. If it somehow turns to be possible, its great.

Bigger PM box: Yay, thats a great Premium feature IMO! Safe to say, I decided to support our forums and become a Premium user myself

Set Style based on usergroup:
Appologies, my mistake. I meant the hack linked in that same thread: 'Styles for Premium Members'. The point is of course not to limit the amount of style sets, but extend the amount of style sets available for Premium users. Thus you have an extra incentive to sign up for Premium. <a href=http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=48953>Correct link here</a>

Phew, that became a long post. Anyway, thanks for listening to my ideas. I will think about it, and see if I can come up with something else :)

Okay, I really like the Styles for Premium Members hack. This was a feature suggested by Eve, but I didn't search for a hack for it well enough or stumble accross it. Thanks for locating it.

I'll put some more thought into some of your other suggestions and look a little harder into how they all work and whether or not they would be viable for our use.

Oh, and let me also say that as far as User Titles go. I will implement something that indetifies "paid" members from regular members in the general forums, I'm just not sure what yet.

Thanks again. :)

Oh and on the topic of suggetions:

Does anyone have any ideas ona good name for these "Gold"/"Premium"/"Paid" members besides "Gold" or "Paid" or "Premium", that would fit well in the SW Universe and be fitting to our board's genre/content?

These rating graphics should be usable across multiple stylesheets:

Nothing striking me as must have yet, but I'm thinking on it.

Oh, Yog, we have more stats available now. There are two links on the upgraded Portal page, which will give some different stats, and some of the same stats as vbstats.

I would prefer to have ratings images that fit in with ur SW genre rather than the default vB images.

What about Jedi/Sith images? Or red/blue lightsabers? Or an image of R2 or 3PO? Perhaps an X-Wing or Tie? Maybe the Deathstar?

hmm, I'm not sure about the saber ratings unless we can think of a different way to do them than that which won't clash with styles.
I have things set up for ease of use that only one set of ratings images exists on the server, so they need to look good in any style in use.

Approximately, what kind of pixel width and height limitations would you suggest for rating graphics?

45 X 20 MAX is my recommendation.

Ok, it took some time, but here is a work in progress. This should be usuable across all the style sets. It is a theme based on SW ships. The more powerful the ship, the higher the rating. First a snowspeeder, then a TIE fighter, then a Z-95, then the Slave1, then the Milennium Falcon. Let me know if Im on the right track here :)

Thanks Yog! We can try those on for size here and see how they look. One thing I wouldn't mind is having the white portion of the numbers colored to match the color scheme I have for our ratings images currently, and I can probably make that change myself.

Master Yoghurt
Oct 27th, 2003, 05:04:27 PM
Well, I did not make them from scratch. Thoose are remade versions of 32x32 pixel freeware SW icons. It took some scaling, rotating and lots of pixel editing to make it work within the size limitations though. The transparency was also a bit of hassle, because of a fuzzy object outline, which had to be defined.

But yeah, I suppose they are kind of cute :)
