In the days of the Old Republic when Jedi where as common as Twi’lek dancers and crooked Hutts, the Order took special care to only train those too young to have formed any prejudices or biases. Their reflexes and intuition were still raw; marking them as clay to be shaped into avatars of justice and peace as they protected the galaxy from evil and disorder. These men and women made up some of the greatest masters of the Force the Galaxy has ever known, their legends and powers far overshadowing that of the current masters of the Force ruling the GJO and other Force wielders.
Many believe that it was their immersion in the techniques and ideology of the Force that made them such capable wielders of the Force. Other’s claimed that before the cloud of Palaptine’ and Vader’s order overcame the galaxy that the Jedi Masters had a more direct link to the unifying Force that was the very essence of reality. Whatever the reason for the change was; the means of how Jedi are now chosen and trained have undergone a nearly polar shift. Young adults are now the new initiates and Padawans. The same people the old order would have never have taken as apprentices for fear of corruption to the Dark Side now sit on the famed Council.
But some still adhere to the old ways of the order, that of training children, generally it is an aging individual master who takes on a small group of learners and teaches them how to wield the Force. Until recently when the New Republic was able to reclaim Coruscant and give a safe haven and a permanent home for the largest most powerful conclave of Jedi in the known Galaxy, the GJO had been far too endangered and mobile for them in good conscience take on small children unable to defend themselves.
There are exceptions to every rule and one cool autumn afternoon on the planet of Arcan IV a small child was left in the center of the Temple Praxeum’s recruitment hall. No one knew who he was or how he got there, at least that is the story that the Masters’ of the order have perpetuated since his arrival.
The boy was immediately taken from the hall and sent to the Jedi Infirmary, to be placed under the care of one of the many Jedi healers in on the compound. It was in the infirmary that he was given his name; Ka’ el Darcverse, a name to this day no one fully comprehends. As he grew older he was allowed to partake in the initiate classes of the Order, learning simple Force techniques that served as the basics for more Formal training, but was always considered too young and the environment much too dangerous to be taken on as a Padawan.
This did not mean though that he was unable to learn, just that it was not formal and he was not a Padawan Learner…
