Hebrew works like that! When they first had Hebrew, there were no vowels. You figured out what the words meant by looking at context. That's why no one knows how to prounounce the name

YHWH, which is the Hebrew name for God in the Old Testament.

Interesting fact: the name YHWH has the A and E vowels in it making it Yahweh. But out of reverence for the name of God, the Israelite scribes always wrote it with the vowels for the name Elohim. When read like that, you mistakenly get the word "Jehovah," which was never an ancient name for God at all, but merely a misunderstanding of Hebrew.

In just about all ancient hebrew texts, they don't use vowels. Which sucks. :(

Aren't the vowels dots, not glyphs? I remember reading that the different placement/number of dots acts as a modifier on the original consonant sound, or something like that.

Kinda like Elvish, actually.

Yeah, they are, mostly, although the A sound looks like a tiny T. The vowels are places above and underneath the consonants, depending on what vowel they are. Also, a dot above a consonant could be an accent, changing the meaning of a word, instead of a vowel.

And you read it from right to left which is great fun. :D Sadly, I've lost most of my knowledge, as its been about four years since I've picked up anything written in Hebrew. I've always wanted to present the Magnificat in Hebrew for Christmas, however.

The vowels were added in later to try to preserve the Hebrew language. In other words, the A and E in Yahweh was a guess. I'm taking Old Testament this semester. Cool info about Jehovah, too. I don't think we went over that in class. But we might later.
