View Full Version : NFL Week 1 Picks

Figrin D'an
Aug 31st, 2003, 09:34:00 PM
Yup, it's that time of year again. :)

Last year, we had as many as 18 people submit their picks each week, and the contest was quite close until the closing weeks. Everyone seemed to enjoy it, so in that light, it seems only fitting to continue the friendly competition again this season.

A quick reminder of the rules:

Each week, the slate of games for the upcoming weekend will be posted. A participant makes a post in which he/she selects the winner of each game. Picks must be in by kickoff of the first game of the week (there will be reminders posted at the beginning of each week). The win/loss numbers are totaled, and the overall records of each participant will be updated every week. At the end of the season, we'll crown a regular season champion, then later a playoff champion and an overall champion. The prize is, simply, bragging rights. :)

For week 1, we have a bit of a unusual situation, as the season opens with a game on Thursday night. Because that doesn't leave a lot of time to make picks, a participant will have two options:

1) Pick the Thursday Night game in one post (before kickoff of the game), then make the rest of the picks (including the Monday Night game) in a seperate post (before 1PM ET on Sunday).

2) Pick all of the first week games by kickoff the first game on Thursday.

Either option is acceptable, and it will give people more time to select the opening weekend games if they require. However, do NOT edit any of your pick posts once kickoff for the first game listed in that post has taken place. Otherwise, you risk forfeiting all of your picks for a given week.

Here's the Week 1 lineup:

Thursday Night

NY Jets at Washington

Sunday, Early

New England at Buffalo
Denver at Cincinnati
Indianapolis at Cleveland
San Diego at Kansas City
Houston at Miami
St. Louis at NY Giants
Baltimore at Pittsburgh
Arizona at Detroit
Minnesota at Green Bay
Jacksonville at Carolina

Sunday, Late

Chicago at San Francisco
New Orleans at Seattle
Atlanta at Dallas

Sunday Night

Oakland at Tennessee

Monday Night

Tampa Bay at Philadelphia

See above for detail on submission options. Kickoff for the Thursday opener is 9PM ET. Kickoff on Sunday is 1PM ET. Good Luck, everyone, and let's get more people in on this than we had last year. :)

I can't see Tampa Bay repeating. I still don't buy that their offense can get it done all season. The defense is will win some games for them, but their not going to catch all the breaks they did last year. They'll win the NFC South, and get into the playoffs, but they won't go all the way again. The age of NFL dynasties is dead... the last one was the Cowboys of the early 90's.

The Jets at Washington, could the season get off to a more boring start? Even if the Jets had Pennington the Skins make this matchup a poor choice to start the season with. I guess I just don't like the idea of the season starting on a Thursday. They should have just stuck to the traditional slate of Sunday games to start the season. Thursday games are fine for the middle of the season, but not the start.

Jedi Master Carr

They could have picked a better matchup though maybe they thought these two teams would be better than they are when they made it.

Close game on the scoreboard, but the Redskins were pretty dominant in most other respects. The Jets need to find an offense, or they're dead in the water. That third-down, short yardage run late in the fourth quarter, when they needed to avoid giving the ball back to Washingon, was a horrible play call by Paul Hackett.

Looks like Spurrier finally has a quarterback that he won't pull after two bad passes.

Ramsey looked pretty good last night. I think the Skins may have found the QB they needed. Coles certainly made a difference in the first half. If Spurrier keeps adding the speed that his offense needs he could have Wash. in the playoffs next year. But this year their early schedule is just brutal.

jjwr
Sep 5th, 2003, 06:00:16 AM
Woo-hoo!! Great start, already got a leg up :)

The redskins showed flashes, could have a very explosive offense if they can get things timed right, Ramsey seems to look for the dump-offs pretty quick which slows the game down some.

Trung had solid numbers, avg 4.6 a rush, I really don't see why he didn't keep getting carries.

I'll post the tallys for everyone after the Raiders/Titans game this evening, then they can be updated after the Monday Night game... just like we handled things last season. It seemed to work pretty well.

I have an Excel spreadsheet that I used to record and calculate totals for the season, but if everyone could double-check their own win/loss totals every week, we can make sure we avoid mistakes.

BTW, a couple of you were late with your picks for the Thursday Night game...

Jedi Master Carr

What happened to Miami??? How did they let Houston beat them that is a huge upset. KC looked great, IMO especially on defense, they could have scored more points but who cares there defense looked a lot better over last years version. Also Holmes is the best back in the NFL he proved that again, he also did it against alot better defense than Portis, IMO.

Rams
What the hell is going on behind the scenes in St. Louis? Martz hung Warner out dry yesterday. Strahan gave Warner a concussion on his 2nd pass attempt and Martz should have seen something was wrong. Now Bolger is set to start next week. If Bolger beats the pumped up division rivals at home next week the Rams are right in the thick of the QB controversy they wanted to avoid. And I'm I the only one that thinks the farther the Rams get away from the years Vermeil coached them, the more credit Vermeil gets for their Superbowl championship? Martz got a ton of credit because it was perceived his offense won their championship. But Vermeil is now running up points in KC and Martz seems to make one questionable decision after another.

Buffalo
Holy crap did they make the Pats pay for poor front office decisions. How the hell do you release Lawyer Malloy? Conversely, the Bills front office looks like one of the best in the league. Despite coming up short against the Pats last year twice, Bledsoe was a great addition. Now adding Spikes and other key defensive players the Bills now look like the class of the division.

Dolphins
There wasn't one team last year that hurt me more than the Dolphins. Week after week they'd cost me picks. Yesterday was just a stunner. That play calling at the end of the game was just too risky. I know they're stacking the line against Ricky, but Fieldler needs to trust his defense to win the game and not force the ball down the field.

Dallas
Bill Parcells is one of the best coaches in the history of the NFL. Unfortunately, Jerry Jones is NOT one of the best GM's in the history of the NFL. Where's the proof? It's in Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter. Remember, these are both "gems" that Jones hand picked for the most important position of his football team. You can argue that he's the ONLY GM in the league that would have gone anywhere near these two guys. Why the Cowboys refused to go after a veteran or draft a QB (they had a shot at Leftwich) is beyond me. Actually, I know exactly why they didn't. JONES!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KC
They looked great yesterday and Chief fans must have felt great when they saw the Holmes of last season running up and down the field. If the defense can get anywhere near the middle of the pack they should make the AFC championship game.

Broncos
Jake Plummer? WTF is Shanahan thinking? Plummer looked like a hapless rookie yesterday. If they had played anyone else but the Bungles yesterday Denver would have been in a world of hurt. Plummer has to get his head out of his butt if they expect to compete with the Raiders and Chiefs.

Bucs and Raiders
They each have to start the season on the road against the team they defeated in their conference championship game. Some might think this unfair, but I think it's perfectly justified. They finished the season 1 and 2, so they should have the 2 hardest schedules in the league.

Ah, the return of the NFL, life begins AGAIN!!!!

Yeah, it's just the first game of the season, but it's sweet payback for that winning streak that Philly had over the Bucs. And if there were any Philly fans that thought that championship game was a fluke I think the Bucs defense crushed that idea.

Week 1 gone and so far I am happy about my Chiefs, still I will be more interested in Sunday game if they can play like that against the Steelers I be very happy will be saying they will be a power in the NFL this year. Other thoughts Buffalo looked great I think they will win that division now. The Titans are the other strong team in the AFC, I feel they dominated the Raiders and if they hadn't let up in the 4th quarter would have blown them out. I the NFC the biggest surprise is Minnesota it was shocking to see them dominate the Packers in GB like that. Also Seattle will be a team to watch them and the 49ers should be fighting over that division.
