Good MP3 Player?

Ok, so I gotta question.

I'm not a huge fan of WinAmp, so forever, I've used Windows Media Player as my default MP3 Player. Lately, however, it's been seriously acting up and I really have no idea why. It just acts. . .funny. No matter, really, considering that it's features are limited.So I'm on the prowl for a good, easy-to-use MP3 Player.

Sonique is pretty cool but it messes with your memory kinda like winamp 3. :)

Like I said, I never used Sonique.. but it was the first MP3 player other than winamp and WMP I could think us.

It was off my harddrive in about three maybe four minutes :x

Zoom Player.

The most stable directshow player I've ever come across. It plays everything, so long as you have the codec/ds filter. I'm pretty sure it has all the features you could ever want, it's also free, takes about -2 seconds to start up, and takes up very little memory.

Winamp 3 is quite decent, if you skin it properly...:lol

If you DO download it, try the MMD3 skin...it does wonders for the interface. Only problem I've heard with it is that it lags computers pretty bad, but I don't seem to have that problem, it loads up just fine.

2.x will always be my favourite, although I do like the Lou Reed 'Raven' skin for 3 (apart from when it interupts your music every hour to say a little poetic quote) :)

I've never had the opportunity to try that, as I haven't had a Celeron since my disgustingly overclocked 466mhz from four years ago.

The thing almost melted its mounting brackets it got so hot...I eventually burned out the fans and overheated the case. Luckily, the Pentium 3 was in sight! :lol

Bah, that's nothing. My power supply's fan broke once and I ran it that way for a week before buying a new power supply. The case got really hot.

I can imagine. However, my desktop's case was CRAPPY for overclocking, especially the cooling bit: I had to add two extra fans to keep the temperatures below blistering, and I ended up cutting big slits around my case because there was originally only one ventilation slot.

Another one that I use to use was jukebox, by musicamatch... but that was big, slow, and took up too much memory.

Hah, that's nothing. I had a friend that not only set his brand new RADEON card on the carpet, but also jammed it into the computer, and when it wouldn't fit he pulled it back out and left to get a beer.

When he returned, he proceeded to spill beer on it and THEN he stepped on it.

Luckily, the warranty covered "stupidity".

Winamp 2.81 is one of the most stable piece of software I have. Its great for playing *.ogg and *.mp3, and there are some cool skins out there to download. It never crashed and I use it on a daily basis. If you need some of the features of Winamp 3.x and dont like bloated software, I suggest winamp 2.91. From what I know, nullsoft are focusing on making winamp 5 more stable, easy to use and with a low memory footprint = much less bloated

I run Winamp 2.81 as well, and I have to agree with Yog's assessment. I haven't even bothered to upgrade to 2.91, and I'll never let 3.x touch my machine again after I downloaded it and tried for about 5 minutes.

Darn tootin, sister. Vorbis audio will beat the stuffing out of MP3 at half the bitrate, channel-linking, chaptering, and it has built-in error detection. You can put a whole album onto one ogg and just go from track to track by using the chapters. I did that with my AOTC soundtrack CD, came out to 39.3 MB for the whole album (72 minutes or so), sounded great.

The answer to your questions are; yes and yes :)

Winamp 5 is in alpha stage. Apparently they decided to skip 4.x alltogether. Note, alpha software is generally way too unstable for standard use. Only download to test it or if youre curious whats new

At higher bitrates, MPC > Ogg = LAME encoded VBR MP3s

I still rip everything in CDex, encode with LAME using alt preset extreme. I upgraded to 2.91 because of some security issues with 2.8x

Yog, the 5 comes from the concept of 2+3=5. 2's platform with 3's skins. Its a memory pig right now, taking up about 20 megs at idle.

Yeah, Crystal, I was convinced by Silus and Uncle Fun to download WinAmp 2.91. I was running WinAmp 3, and it was giving me headaches. But this one isn't too bad. It seems to work pretty well, so I guess I won't fuss too much about WinAmp anymore. :D
