Because it has a lot of affixes tacked on. Breve itself is an adjective. To change that to an English noun requires several additions. They take it from meaning "short" to "a shortening".

If you consider the root word "breve" alone, you only have about five letters- four if you just count how it's used in "abbreviation".

It's kinda funny- I never thought I'd have a use for my linguistics knowledge, yet here one is. :)
