Looking for an early star wars book.

I've never actually read a star wars book but have become quite interested thanks to KOTOR and SWG... I'm looking for a book that is based early in the time line, much before the episodes. Perhaps something before the republic. Something about the Sith as a species and so on. Something reallyyyyyy early. Got any suggestions? Or websites?

There's no novels set in the period of time you're talking about. I belive that the novels at present start in/around Episode 1 and onward.

Is the comics timeline, you'd be most interested in the stuff between 5000 bby and 1000 bby by the sounds of it.

Tales of the Republic, Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina, Tales of the Empire and Tales of the Bounty Hunters. Start with those (can be found or ordered from just about any bookstore). I forget the link, but there is a timeline that details the order that the Star Wars books go in. If I can find it again, I'll post it.

They are generally not worht the paper they are on.

The only things you'll find are the TOTJ comics. Great little reads they be, seen by many to be the best SW comics Dark Horse have produced.
