I speak "normal" American... no heavy East-Coast "New Yawk" or "Bastan" influence, so heavy (or even light) Southern twang, no "Hollywood/Valley" speak, not even a heavy Midwest accent. I exist somewhere in between all of those, in a nice happy medium. :)

Of course, to a non-American, I would likely have an accent. Just not discernable as any of those aformentioned.

My misinterpretation then... by "Hollywood", I thought you meant the Southern California form of the language... which has plenty of it's own odd little coloquialisms...

I'd be interested to see if you claim of unaccented speak if true, though. I've met plenty of people whom claim as such, only to discover that they have a rather pronounced and noticable accent.

I find this to be highly dubious. There are syllable emphasis and pronunciation differences in every region of the US, leading to different accents. It is possible for an individual, within any given region, to have little or no discernable accent. But, to categorize a whole region as speaking "normal, non-accented" language is... suspect, IMO.

Linguistically speaking, a huge majority of americans believe that they have no accent. Some areas, such as upper east coast, south, texas and the dakotas, are move aware of their accents than others, but everybody has an accent, it's just how close to standard "news English" we percieve it to be.

Even "news English" isn't immune accents. There are plenty of news anchors that have discernable accents. They try to hide it, but occasionally, they slip back into their native habits.

It's true that most Americans believe they have no accent. Honestly, it wasn't until I went to college out-of-state that I really started to notice particular idiosyncrasies of various people's speech. In some cases, it became easy to identify the exact state of the person's origin, just through his/her voice. Nearly everyone I met, however, could not determine my state of origin, nor even the region of the country I was from. Apparently, any Midwestern verbal tendancies in my voice are either non-existent, or well-masked. (Even more humorous though was coming home from college on summer break or whatnot, and being keenly aware of the nasal German/Scandinavian-influenced mishmashed accent that permeates my home area. Sometimes I wonder how I wasn't corrupted by it.)

The thing is, we aussies all know we talk weird, so we have a pride in it. There are different strength aussie accents, being more pronounced the further north you go.

But unlike say the UK, there's not an identifiable locality accent. Brits to us definatly have very different locality accents and class ones too. Upper class is very full and "posh tosser". Then there's the geezer how yer going guv?.

I can tell you, all USA people I've sploken to have vastly different accents - but the one thing they all have in common is speed of speech. Yanks talk faster. Even S'il, who to my ear has the most easily understood accent, speaks quickly. Morgan speaks at a more aussie level in speed, but his accent is highly pronounced.

You can pick an Aust accent by the way we basically mangle pronounciations - Just the standard Aussie - pronounced "OZZE" not "hussie" as Yanks seem to try to imitate - can clear out 99.9% of the pretenders.

I'd say the biggest probelm you yanks seem to have trying to do an ozzy accent is that your screw up the phonetics of such basics as G'day and Aussie. It's not the tone that gets a good ozzy yak, it how yer drop yer haitches.

Lilaena De'Ville
Jun 20th, 2003, 12:49:11 AM

I, admittedly, speak rather quickly at times. It's something that I have improved upon significantly since I was younger.

I think, though, most people, when conversing with someone of a dramatically differing accent than their own, will tend to think the other person is speaking quickly simply because one's ear isn't attuned to processing words of an "unusual" accent as easily as those of their own.

(The only first-hand exceptions I can note are a deep Southern accent, or a Texas accent. Those both tend to be very deliberate.)

Dasquian Belargic

Do you mean that we only have posh and common accents? We have so many! If you get me, Dru, Sieken and Fett in a room I can guarauntee we all will sound totally different. I couldn't understand Fett, Sieken couldn't understand me - and no one would be able to stand Dru :mneh (j/k.. :shakefist @ scousers for stealing city of culture!!)

Fett, you don't sound dumb. And trust me when I say, people from NA love any accents. Especially in Canada, because ours is "normal". We don't have anything like half the US accents, unless you count all the people who immigrate here.

I think I must have a Colorado/California accent from living in both places for long periods of time. People who have lived in California all their lives usually tell me I have an accent (perhaps more due to my Daddy's Boston accent having an influence on me than actually living in CO) but when I moved back to Colorado they all said I was "soooo california" because of the way I talked.

I have a Brittish Accent. A true one. Not posh, or common, just brittish. Ive moved about the country so much no one can guess where im from. Some say Ireland, some say Bristol. I have a touch of Scottish, a touch of brum (ick!).

But that also means Im pretty good at accents. Geordie is pretty good, I love that accent! Scottish is pretty much bang on, as you'd expect. Brummy is funny when I do it, I really go out on that one! London can be quite good, Bristols not bad depending on the word, scouse is funny, although I dont really like it much. Thats about all I can think of, off the top of my head.

Hey, I didn't say I believed it totally, but it is what I read. I think I probably have some sort of an accent. My Grandparents say "warsh" or "if you 'unt to" and some stuff, but they are also farm kids. I dunno.

The weird thing about that is that The Beatles didn't actually have scouse accents or at least not as the accent is recognised now. Maybe that's how the Liverpool accent sounded all those years ago but it's definately different from that and by quite a fair degree too.

Our state is growing very rapidly. It's like we are doing what the Confederacy couldn't: Bleed the life out of the North. Granted, it is progressing very slowly, but it's happening.
