I have to confess, it is a toss-up between OJW and TMWSLV on which makes the final slot on my top ten. A great movie directed by Eastwood and a classic directed by the legendary John Ford.

*sigh*

Tombstone = No. 1
Maverick
Shane
Rio Lobo
The Sacketts
Rio Grande
Unforgiven
Stagecoach

..and any number of really old westerns where the good guys were white hats and the bad guys wear black ones. John Wayne is a staple, so I'll have to add Stagecoach to the list. :)

Hmm... I am not sure I completely agree... I love antiheros as well. Such as those found in Outlaw Josey Whales, Sergio Leone classics, High Plains Drifter Unforgiven, The Long Riders... but also love the traditional white hat/black hat characterizations too. Like High Noon and others. Everyone would have to agree that Eastwood took a great corner niche of the former.

My dad has a tape collection of really old Westerns, some of which are hilariously witty and funny. I love 'em but I can't remember actors or titles of the movies. They're great though. :)

I don't even think I've seen three Western films!

Yeah, I am at the moment attempting to be a more consistant viewer of the classics (all genres). Your father probably possesses a wealth of cinematic history. ;)

BTW, Unforgiven is my most beloved western.

Yep. We loved westerns in my house when I was growing up... Still do, of course. Mom and Dad used to read Louis L'amour books to us too. O! *runs to update list*

True Grit! That was the other one I was trying to think of the name of. ^_^;

Interesting fact: True Grit is the only movie John Wayne won an oscar for, and the only movie in which he worked under a female director.

In general, I don't like westerns :(.

But there are exceptions to every rule ;), and four of those are:

Unforgiven
True Grit
The Shootist
The Cowboys
