Description: Punisher and Daredevil commision by Dave Ross, taken off of a web site I found on the net. It was done in dark pencil but inking had to be done for the pencil rendering(shading). So I did both coloring and digital inking jobs on this.

Thoughts: I've been having problems with skin and I think that's my biggest weakness right now. Without a doubt the part I'm least pleased with on this piece.

The white in the Punisher's outfit was done by having a mid-grey shade as the base and progressively lighter greys, until it was white, for the highlights. I went aggresive on the highlights, to make it look more white. A thrown together solution for my problems with getting white to look right. Think it worked out well.

I went over the entire piece with a orangish hued layer set to "soft light". It's a trick to give the entire art a mood and make everything look like it's in the same place. Might be a little too orange on second thought.

The background was just a space filler. It isn't meant to be a source of light, though it could work. I intended my light source to be from the upper left corner. The orangeish background went with the mood color I chose and helped to bring the Punisher out a bit, which he wasn't doing on other colored backgrounds.

The Daredevil is very reminscant of the colouring style in Kevin Smith's Guardian Devil arc, with the strong red and a lot of shadows. I really like that. The wire on the billy club may be a bit too white if it was on another background, but in this case it not only looks fine, but complements the Punisher nicely.

Moving on to Frank himself, I think that aside from the guns grip, which has a colour which sticks out a bit too much, it looks good.



And the skin looks good, especially on Punisher.

I don't really follow these two either S'Il. Well, I've been reading the TPBs of Garth Ennis' Punisher and have read a little Daredevil, but not much.

Description: Well, I found this picture on a really nice site that I found while looking for tutorials on how to color. Now they've taken off the tutorials on the site, but they've left the artwork. Really good stuff, IMO. I chose this one because it was simple to do quickly (gandalf doesn't have many colors) and it was the cleanest piece on the site. They had some very dirty pencils that weren't inked, but this wasn't too bad.

Thoughts: Anyway, with the cloak I went for a light grey, with sharp highlights. I wanted it to look almost white and a bit magical if it was at all possible. I didn't want a white cloak, but one that shimmered white. I think it turned out pretty, though not highly realistic.

With the hair, I went with long strands of white, as the highlight. No shadows. Makes it pop out, is simple, and keeps his beard fresh looking without a bunch of shadow.

Now the skin, I thought, turned out well. I decided to not use shadows, to keep this a light piece. I didn't want Gandalf, everyone's favorite wizard, to look brooding or anything. I'm actually most proud of the skin, because I thought it was the biggest improvement.

With the staff I did a basic shading and lighting on the stick, but went off the track with the stone piece. I figured, this guy's a magician, he isn't going to have a big hunk of something. It's got to be glowing, pulsating, magical. Not bad, but I could have done better.
<hr>Well, it isn't Dae's art, but I'll probably post her's tomorrow. Also, I have some great art by Sejah I'm going to start working on, so look for that. :D

Discription: Well, Dae posted this picture and I asked to color it. She said it was cool, so I did... though many weeks later. Feel free to congratulate her as well, as she did a wonderful job on the artistry.

Thoughts: Well, it was a fully rendered pencil drawing when I first got it. Which means the shadows were defined by loose pencil shading. That kind of conflicts with the coloring job, unless an inker has filled in the shaded parts. Of course, this was an anime drawing, and in anime they usually just pencil and ink the lines, leaving all the lighting to the colorist. So, I went about deleting and cleaning the pencils. But I tried to remain true to what Dae intended, by using her outlines somewhat for where the shading should be, etc. There's also the problem with the fact Vash's left hand is unfinished. I opted not to color it, as it'd look funky. Also, you could get the impression it's a photo and the camara focused on Vash's face and blurred the hand. So I just left it.

Now, throughout the piece I tried to give it an anime look. Though I find that style a bit hard, as I always want to make it look more real. So I kind of comprimised and made it half anime/half my style.

The hair, which is always a trouble for me, I opted to highlight and shadow very densely. Just thought it'd look better instead of a few highlights here, a few shadows here, and it's done. Though it turned out looking a bit "chalky" but I tried my best. That's some wild hair that dude has, so I was already lost with what to do. :lol

With the coat I went with a more vibrant red than what I found in most of the pictures on the internet. I just couldn't stand the low saturated red all the pictures had. I thought this guy needed a feel of strength and speed, so I gave him some spazaaz with a deeper saturated red.

The skin, I went with a more anime look. Which is usually one shadow on a side of the face, and that's it. If I over rendered the face, it'd look like an evil cartoon, so I went with anime.

With the gloves, I went with a leather look. I wasn't sure how his gloves usually looked, but I liked the way leather looked on him.

The gun, I went with an extremely bright and shiny gun, with little shadow. Kind of wanted it to look like it had the light directly on it, making it sparkle.

The glasses... alright I guess. First time I ever colored glass, so it turned out alright.

I thought this turned out alright. Especially since I don't have much experience coloring anime drawings. Also, the picture had a little of degrading, but it still looks okay.

Vash's gloves are actually a dark brown with lighter brown highlites :D

And, manga is usually inked, and if it is colored, it's with water-color. I'm glad you used different colors from the screen-shots (I'm assuming you looked at them to get the right colors), because they tend to be very washed out.

Thoughts: Well, Sejah gave me the colors and a description of each item, so there wasn't much guess work. Which is great. I tried to follow his description of the material the stuff was made up, what it looked like, etc. to make it look right. I think it came out pretty good.

The background is a pic I found somewhere, can't remember where. I lower the opacity and blurred it. It's just for effect, not meant to be judged or anything. :) <hr> Let's all congradulate Sejah on an excellent job on this! Without his pencils and inks, I'd be nothing. Well, it wouldn't exist at all, but you know what I mean. :lol

Well, I don't normally ink, so, this was actually a bit easier to color than some of my other pieces where I ahve to constantly watch out for the pencil lines and such. I had a lot of fun with cloth on him, as well as the background.

Yes, some deserts can be that devoid of life, and he's supposed to be protecting the well against you. Even though it might not be his well. Just, don't mess with a Sherouve.

Attached is a smaller version, just in case the big one doesn't load.

Holy cow, Sage, you really made it look dramatic! I love the shade of red you made the sleeves, and the leatherwork is fantastic! Your choice of backgrounds was also very keen! I love it, absolutely love it.

I am also impressed by how you were able to do the fur on him as well, presuming you had never done fur before. I tryly am happy you did this one for me, and I might ahve to ask for a high-res copy of it too!

I did forget to tell you how much my colors fade when I shade them, so the darker tones you used make him seem a lot more like what the Sherouve are supposed to be.

This gets an A+ in my book. Awsome job.

Description: Found this cool pic. Mark Bagley's a really good artist and I was extremely happy to find this. Especially since it was begging for dramatic lighting effects.

Thoughts: The sun and rays were already drawn in. I just blurred the lines but used them as a guide first, then I blurred the colors. The little glow on Spidey was a little touch I added for effect. I'm pretty sure it's total fiction and couldn't be recreated in reality, but it looked cool. :)

I tried to go with the inks on this one for guidelines of where to have dark shadow, etc. I don't usually like going against the artist's intent on where the light hits, unless it's 100% bogus. There was some problems with why that part of the leg, or that hand, etc. was luminated but I decided to go with the flow. It looked good in the end, so that was all that mattered. I tried to make this pic a stylized version of reality rather than a strict realistic portrayal.

I had some problems with the buildings. I still haven't figured out how to do them with the sun where it was. If the sun is behind a building, than the side facing away from the sun would be all in shadow. Yet, then it looks flat and bland. I need to get out more, go downtown from where I live and study the buildings. I could actually do this easily if I just tagged along with my father on his business errands, which he's totally cool with me doing. (hey, it's like a field trip, me being homeschooled)

All in all, I actually think this is by best work. Mostly because it just captures the mood the best. Usually I'll get bogged down with getting cool highlights, etc. and forget about mood. Mainly because I'm trying to refine my technical ability before I start actually making amazing pics. Before, each pic was an experiment. In one pic I'd try to utilize cuts(coloring term), in another I'd try to color texture better, in another I'd go for heavy shadow. Just working out how I'd approach whatever I need to down the line. Kind of like giving myself courses, "Today class, we'll be learning how to create glossy highlights. Tomorrow, anime!!" Now that I'm more confident in my ability I can focus on what the picture needs instead of what I need to grow in my experience as a colorist.

I'm actually using Paintshop. Can you tell? :D It's just that I always get compliments on my coloring yet everyone acts like you have to have Photoshop to be any good. Now, either I'll get Photoshop and be the same... or I'll be even better... hehehehehe. :D

Dang man, I want a scanner!!! I'm actually not very bad at drawing. I'd go all drawings on my sigs. I'd draw pics and backgrounds, in rectnagular boxes, just for a sig. It'd be great... Man, I can't wait!!!! Should be by Christmas, I hope. Though my birthday's in August.... :)

In my admittedly short experience in graphics, it is not the tool that you use, it is how you use it. Paintshop has certain limitations that PS does not - and vica versa I guess. For painting as you do, as long as PSP has the brush control you want, it will do what you want. I doubt tho PSP could get the sabres out of it. But that's a different kettle of fish.

It sucks that I've only lately discovered the artistic ability I never knew I had. It sucks that no one really wants a Sys Admin, no matter how good who can command what I can. I'm too expensive for the market. What I want is somethign that no matter how good I get, people will want to pay for my services. I've been told that graphics and art is a saturated market - but the really talented people are few and far between. and graphics is a market where your work is your advertising, because it can be displayed. What can you show for a Sys Admin? The fact is, my job is done correctly when I am doing nothing - because everythign works and automated. I used to dream someone would wander by here, see how well I coudl write and buy some of my stuff. I...

I really wish I knew where to go from here. I know I can write liek a blaze. I know my Ps skillz grow.... but how do I get to use them?

Half the people in my class were crap, sorry to say. Mark, you do amazing work. I wish I was as good with doing computer graphics as you and some of the other people on this board are :lol But I can't seem to understand HTML or any of that. Sure, I could whip graphics for a web-site in no time, but I can't put it together. Which is a huge set-back if you want to get into the Design field. (Every job I have seen needs web-design, which I don't know anything about.)

So, I'll just stick to my pencil and paper and paint. It's what I'm good at, hopefully one day someone will see that talent and have a place for me to use it.

And if not, I'll do it myself.(Which I am -- I'm thinking of taking some of my Fans writing and drawing it up. :lol Maybe I'll get Sagey to be my colorist ;))

There isn't anything you can do in PSP that you can't do in photoshop, and it probably takes equal/less effort in Photoshop.

There is a reason PS costs $600 retail, and no one at the professional level uses anything else.

Well, there's actually a new line of comics, under Marvel, named "Tsunami". It's all manga inspired. But, well, you've stated your view so I'll stop talking now... :)
