View Full Version : Image Warehousing

b) 8 months?????? Now come on, that type of warehousing isnt on. That's just plain not fair. I can understand a few months, but over 6 is just going too far. especaially as a character with zero posts if thats right. There should be a point where inactive characters have to give up pics. Personally, that's what I believe in and I have done - I've only claimed for three characters and that's all now, because the rest are inactive or so irregular posting, why should I make a claim? Is that fair on fellow roleplayers if I do?!?

The other annoying one is when a character is used maybe a handful of times hen never posts again.

Didnt post that but really, it's saying my feelings on this entirely. This warehousing of images is pissing me off.

edit... what the....? The new style is going up today?

I'd agree. There should be a minimum activity limit to for a character to maintain a pic. The only problem is policing the policy once enacted. Methinks the best way would be to look into it if someone requests the use of a pic. If it's discovered that the character that holds the pic has been inactive for a period of time, that character then forfeits the pic and use can be granted to the person making the request.

And yeah... I didn't know anything about the new style implementation either.

We can't enforce anything beyond using peer pressure.

If someone decides to use a character pic already in use by someone else, you can't really force them not to. Likewise, you can't force someone to give up their character pic because they don't really use it.

Comment about the new styleset: The Mark Read link is too far out of the way, IMO. I think a text link under the current council listing would work well.

Agreed, lemme move it.

Morg: I did some posbit work, and used actual text links to save on image manufacture for all the links like you have in the header.

Thats a very good idea that I was going to do eventually.

Is the font for the links in posts (Edit, Quote, Reply, etc) supposed to be Times New Roman?

Morgan Evanar
May 12th, 2003, 03:15:35 PM
Yes.

TheHolo.Net
May 12th, 2003, 03:16:38 PM
P.S. I moveed all the images off of panic (the ones you had there so far at least) and here to the Fans host for better load speeds and less bandwidth strain on panic.

Suggestion:

You should make a "closed" button that matches your topic and reply buttons for displaying in closed threads.

Morgan Evanar
May 12th, 2003, 03:49:35 PM
Done.

TheHolo.Net
May 12th, 2003, 03:57:44 PM
Cool.

You can see it in action in this thread, where the "Reply" image would normally be.

Now we could use replacements for these images and the style will more or less be complete and matching:

I've uploaded them into http://panic.hopto.org/test/vb/replacements/

Also... my avatar is behaving funny. :huh

I spaced a few that just came to mind.

Fixd the avatar misbehavior.

Thanks. :)

Got an IP for panic or is it just down at the moment? (The IP won't resolve)

Gave it a kick in the pants, should work now.

TheHolo.Net
May 12th, 2003, 06:13:37 PM
I still wasn't able to get to panic through the panic name, but I got to it through another name and snagged the images, which are now on the SWFans host.

Thanks again. :)

A very tiny thing that bugs me a bit:

See that little line in the BG image in the post section of your last reply, right under the Edit link? Think you could nix that?

Other than that, I like the style mucho grande. :)

Replacement dir.

TheHolo.Net

All done.

This new style can be implemented whenever I get the Go-Ahead.

Marcus Telcontar
May 12th, 2003, 08:29:23 PM
That's looking pretty okay.

Question - do we want to keep the alt style of the B&G or standardise the lot?

Morgan Evanar
May 12th, 2003, 08:31:37 PM
We'll have an alt-style.

Whenever you want to launch it.

TheHolo.Net
May 12th, 2003, 08:35:04 PM
We have seperate template sets for the B&G, Arcan, RC, LQ, Avalon, and the Academy forum, so each can have some differences and some even will have small differences after I implement. (Like the Jedi code at the top of the Academy forums, the Council Vote month data in Avalon, and the Sith post warning in the RC.)

Morgan Evanar
May 12th, 2003, 08:38:17 PM
Yus. I know, I'll probably make bigger differences later. Especially the B&G.

TheHolo.Net
May 12th, 2003, 09:09:59 PM
Okay, the new style is all implemented. When you do get around to modifying the B&G, let me know beforehand so I can steer you in the right direction for making it a seperate style, since it does already have a seperate template set and replacement variable set. (it is just set to use the standard new style replacement set right now, not its own, but the template set its set on is its own.) :)

The fornt GJO page is very sweet. However, maybe a faded out background may help break up all that darkness.

TheHolo.Net
May 12th, 2003, 09:21:38 PM
Just so its known. This forum, the Helpdesk and the main GJO front page all share the same template (style) set.

There is an easy way to spot the style sets by looking at the footer counter area:

This one says

"Pageviews for GJO since June 13, 2002: #######"

The others have their individual forum names in them, or shared forum names if one template set shares more than one forum set.

Marcus Telcontar
May 12th, 2003, 10:30:56 PM
1.3 million pages views??????

TheHolo.Net
May 12th, 2003, 10:50:27 PM
Yes, that counter is for all of GJO, including its subforums. SW-Fans.Net as a whole is at almost 9 million now. :)

Shawn

Style looks very slick, I'm liking it. One thing: I know you're trying to keep the image size down, but... that blue planet in the bg looks kind of ugly. Mebbe blur it a bit?

Morgan Evanar
May 13th, 2003, 09:18:19 AM
Can't without making the image way too big. =/ Stupid JPEG. We need an smart, adptive area designated compression system.

TheHolo.Net
May 13th, 2003, 10:50:59 AM
Two images that total about 30K, its really not that bad, especially after gzip has its way with them.

Morgan Evanar
May 13th, 2003, 11:20:10 AM
They aren't really critical to display page content besides. Moz and IE place background images as a lower priority or something, and usually renders tables and text first. I don't know what Opera does, nor do I care.

Its a compromise. I try to have the critical stuff load fastest. The total size for the page should be around 50~60k, barring signatures.

TheHolo.Net
May 13th, 2003, 11:22:45 AM
:lol. The banner image for my T-Phantom style itself is over 100k, 50 to 60 total is not bad at all.

The logout button really screws with the layout in Moz unless I stretch my browser window to be abnormally large.

Morgan Evanar
May 13th, 2003, 01:30:42 PM
Err the log out button broke stuff. Lemme upload one, and also lemme upload a revised calendar image so stuff fits better.

Replacements dir also has a new log out button with the proper font (Divona)

Edit2: I'm just gonna nix the calendar link. I don't care for it anyway.

Edit: I replaced all the top buttons. They're in the header dir.

*sigh* It's lovely, but it still seems strange that jedi have such a dark style... I really wish there was a black text on white bg style for this section of the boards. Much easier to read long posts on. :)

Oh, and about image warehousing, I have a character that is in the works but won't be "born" so to speak for a while. Is it ok to hold that image for good reason?

Morgan Evanar
May 17th, 2003, 02:20:56 PM
I find the exact opposite. White background are totally hard on the eyes with my big CRT.

Ryla Relvinian
May 17th, 2003, 02:37:09 PM
Wow, really? Well, now I consider myself enlightened. :)

What about beige? It seems like a very Jedi color.

Morgan Evanar
May 17th, 2003, 02:55:24 PM
Well, I'm trying to make something for a background where it's just black, but I'm not having much luck.

Marcus Telcontar
May 17th, 2003, 11:44:41 PM
White backgrounds tend to suck for my eyes :x

Figrin D'an
May 18th, 2003, 12:00:10 AM
I've always been more comfortable viewing darker backgrounds with lighter text. The only time I really don't use such a theme when using a computer is in word processing programs.
